Recessed lighting in dining room??

I am trying to decide on the lighting that will be going in our new kitchen. I decided to use recessed lights in the kitchen as one source of light. We have a dining room next our kitchen separated by a peninsula. Our kitchen renovation is starting to become a dining room kitchen reno so I am trying to keep costs down.

My question is if the kitchen is open to the dining room should the track lighting extend to the dining room too. We do have a large chandelier in the center of our DR which gives off plenty of light.

I included recessed in my dining room as well as a chandelier. Our dining room and kitchen are open to each other. I enjoy the fact that we can use the dimmers on the recessed lights during dinner.

Many new homes have recessed lighting throughout the house. We are doing the same as we remodel various rooms in the house.

Given that you won't be looking up at the ceiling with any degree of regularity, the question is probably more what type of lighting you need to achieve a well-lighted space. A well-lighted space has plenty of natural light illuminating in the daytime and no dead spots when lights are turned on. A good lighting plan also has several different types of lighting including under-cabinetry lighting. Aesthetics also plays a role. If you have found a chandelier you like, then work that into the plan. Maybe someone else with more lighting experience will comment as to your recessed lighting question.

I've sat in numerous restaurants that have installed downlights over their tables. That style of lighting is very harsh as it creates shadows on diners' faces -- and everything on the table -- accentuates every facial imperfection, and is just annoying. I think a chandelier is better because it hangs lower, and the light is less directional or can be more easily directed at the tabletop. -- amateur
