I used to grow Lithops and other mesembs and some dwarf cactus in my mid-town apartment, I used bookshelves that had 2-ft banks of fluorescent lights screwed into the undersides, and had the plants within 2-3" of the lights themselves - if the distance were any greater the light is not enough, you can do this for small species like the ones I mentioned, but something more leafy like bursera will not look very good under anything other than HID lamps, which are not practical in an apt. I also kept a small fan running 24-7, it built up black soot in about 3 days after cleaning it, just think of what the NYC air is doing to our lungs. There's nothing wrong with a sunny windowsill, you don't need supplements as long as you get about 3 hours of sun, just be careful not to knock the plant off! I used to go to the NY Cactus & Succ Society meetings, they were every other month on E 72nd, but it was mainly older folk, I did not fit in to that crowd and it was pretty lame.

Thank you for the reply to me question. I took your advice and removed the pilot light assembly and found it full of mud on top of the restrictor that I did not see when I first removed the pilot tube. Their must of been some kind of bug living in it. I cleaned it out and it light within 30 seconds. I am glad to get it running before the -3 temps hit last week. It is not fun having a work shop with no heat in the winter. Thanks

The frosted panels on the light you’re considering seem like a good fit with your frosted doors. I wonder though - how would a different shape look? As Susan points out, the bulk of current & new fixtures is at the bottom. I’d want to see what a wider & shorter light would look like - balance the size & shape against the center height & full width of the palladian window above the door. I’m looking at you dining light to right in photo. See how the shape of it flows with the same shape window in that room? Try a visualizer if the lighting site has one - put the light in your photo.

I have to agree the layout does not work as shown so the plan is what we need for sure. As for lighting the work counter under cabinet lighting is the way to go there , Symmetry in lighting is not always possible but overall lighting in a kitchen is a must L like all LED 4000K bulbs and some switches to control what you need at any given time I like under cabinet on one switch , island lights on another and the rest on another . IMO a kitchen is like an operating room when it comes to good lighting.
