You probably don't need it, but it's nice to have. A coworker, with Puerto Rican roots, and who is a wonderful cook, introduced me to it. I use mine in place of salt for seasoning bland things like egg salad, I also usually add it to chili and salsa and pico de gallo. I usually use the one without pepper.
You can make your own, if you are so inclined (I'm not). I found these online.
Adobo Blend 1 tablespoon oregano 2 teaspoons Butter Buds® Sprinkles 2 teaspoons garlic powder 2 teaspoons onion powder 1 teaspoon cumin 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1/4 teaspoon salt Combine all ingredients. Store spice blend in a glass or plastic container with a tight-fitting lid. How To Use It:
Marinated Mexican Beef Combine 1 1/2 tablespoons of spice blend with 1 cup tomato juice. Pour over 1 pound flank steak, skirt steak or thinly sliced top round in zipperseal bag; seal bag tightly and marinate for several hours in the refrigerator. Grill or broil medium-rare to medium.
Adobo Salsa Combine 2 cups chopped tomato, 2 tablespoons each minced fresh cilantro and onion, 2 to 3 teaspoons of spice blend, 1/4 teaspoon each salt and hot pepper sauce. Mix well and serve with tortilla chips.
I buy Adobo seasoning from Penzeys and use it all the time. It's kind of like Mexican/Spanish/South American version of seasoned salt. You can make your own, or just add the spices separately--oregano, garlic, cumin, salt, pepper, etc. But I'm lazy! It makes all kinds of dishes faster and easier to prepare. I use it most for chili and other types of bean soups.
Thanks all! I think I need this as I see lots of Taco Soup, bean soup, and more picadillo in my future. I tried to pry my onion powder out of the jar today and it was no go. So I think I will buy some adobo seasoning - just not the huge container I saw at the store. ~Teresa
I don't like it at all! I have friends who use it, so I tried some and I just don't get the flavor. Maybe it's the cumin. Starting with a small container to see if you like it sounds prudent to me!
