Another book to add to your 'good' list

I just finished What the Dead Know, by Laura Lippmann. It's not your average mystery (although I love mysteries). I thought it was excellent.

To give you an idea of what it's about, here's an excerpt from one of the Amazon reviews:

In 1975, two teenage sisters disappeared from a Baltimore shopping mall, and their fate was never determined. Now, thirty years later, an emotionally unstable woman claims to be one of the missing sisters. Her story has a lot of holes in it, and the search is on for the truth of what happened on that long-ago day. Lippman brings just the right Gothic/Noir touches to her masterful tale . . . Don't miss this haunting, beautifully written novel. Highly recommended.

It's supposed to be based on an actual event, but I don't know any of the details of the real event. The book is definitely fiction.

A friend on a non-hippi list sends a photo of her cool CAKE and there is a hippi in the background. She replies that she knows nothing of this Apple Blossom (not an AB) and you say that it looks like Pink Diamond and suggest she looks it up on the internet. She replies that she did a GOOGLE search for Pink Diamond and lo and behold her search reveals a photo that you took posted on this photo. She then refers to you as a wealth of knowledge and starts bombarding you with questions...and of course you encourage her to join the FORUM!! K

I think this is a good starting point. I looked for the recipe I first used but think it must have been on a rum bottle or?? One thing I've learned is to NOT put the mint in the simple syrup (when making the syrup) instead of muddling it. I did that one time per a friend's instruction and YUCK it made the mojito taste like mouthwash. In a 16 ounce mixing glass, gently muddle together: 1 large sprig spearmint .75 oz simple syrup Add: 1 oz of fresh squeezed lime juice and pulp 2 oz white rum (sometimes called Silver Rum) I use Castillo Silver 3 oz club soda or sparkling mineral water Top with crushed ice and mix until drink is combined and glass is frosty. I used to use club soda, but now use Gerolsteiner mineral water that I buy at Trader Joe's. I've tried other mineral waters, but it's the only one I like I'd not use any other...if you can't find it, use club soda and use a name brand, not a house brand. I like Schweppes the best. I have only read a few of those books, one of which (The World According to Garp) I actively disliked. From what I know of them, they are not what I personally would choose to read during hard times, especially a prolonged period of hard times. I might want to read a book or two or three that provided understanding about what I was going through, but mostly I would like to remind myself that times had once been better, and possibly would be again one day. When I am worried and depressed and struggling, I don't want to read that life is all about fear and sadness and endless difficulty, whether those books tell me that patient endurance and courage will eventually see me through, or whether they tell me there's no hope at the end, anyway. So yes, books about hard times, best read in retrospect, when life is a bit more bearable.

I just finished reading Out of Season by Robert Bausch. I truly enjoyed it. I'm going tomorrow to find more books by this author.

It is rated 4 stars at Amazon.com and sounds really good. I'll have to start looking for it. The paperback version comes out later this month.

I haven't been reading much lately. I usually average a book each week, but now it's more like 1 book every two months! I don't know why since I'm home all day and have plenty of time to read. Guess I'm just not in the mood or haven't started the "right" book.

For some reason I'm reading like crazy! I started in December when I had a couple weeks off from work (I read 5 books the month of December!). I'm now in the last quarter of "Lonesome Dove" and I can't put it down. I have a couple of others waiting to be read after this one, but I think I will pick up another in the "Lonesome Dove" series to read in the Springtime. I never saw the television version of Lonesome Dove...but the book is really really good!

I have to be in (what I call) my reading mode, which I have been in for several months. I have discovered an author whom I really like, he is William Kent Krueger. His books take place in No Minnesota. I found I could google Minnesota mystery authors and got a long list of authors who write mystery books that take place here. Three other Mn authors who I really like is Tammy Hoag, John Sandford and Steve Thayer. Dottie

I read it and thought it strange. They mention locales in the book I'm familiar with...The book I am reading is excellent. The Senator's Wife by Sue Miller
