BM Paint for Stair skirting recs

Hi everyone....I'm cross posting this message here from the paint forum (which seems pretty 'dead' at the moment, lots of non-responsive topics), since I've seen a fair amount of painting topics here, I thought I would give it a shot....my message on the paint forum was as follows:

I'm hoping to get some guidance on the best type of BM paint to use for wood molding....We tried Regal Classic Semi-Gloss and found it completely unusable (surface trying far too quickly to lay on properly, and had some color blocking on doors and frame)

I'm considering using their Advance 100% Alkyd Paint (we are painting a new beadboard/stair skirting remodel) and would love to get some feedback from anyone who has used this...

the Regal Classic isn't sandable so it will be a job trying fix the blocking areas..

Also, would it be possible to paint over the Classic with the Advance Alkyd (should that be the best choice)

Any other suggestion would be highly appreciated!

I am in the process of working on our stairs too. We have oak flooring which was refinished on the main floor to Jacobean so it's pretty dark now. The stairs were not done at the same time and I planned on having it done later but the colour clash with the jacobean and honey oak is too much for me so it has become a DIY project.

So far I have sanded, primed and painted all the risers white. I used the same BM trim paint that we have on all the trim in the house. This looks great and the paint was easy to work with.

Last weekend I washed, sanded and primed the newel posts and railings.I used the new Advance paint and found it easy to work with as well. Nice that it is water and soap clean-up. I still have one more coat of paint for all the railings.

The next job is big - we have to sand down and stain all the stair treads..not looking forward to that.

The staff at the BM dealership seemed to like the Advance paint and it was not difficult to use. I can't speak to the durability as it has not been put to use yet.

I don't know about painting over the Classic with it but the BM staff should be able to answer that question for you.

I just posted over there a few days ago asking faron about the differences between Ace Cabinet & Trim and BM Advance. He says the C&T is fine to work with as it's a waterbased alkyd and not even that expensive, doesn't have any experience w/the Advance(same technology), but RAVED about the FPE trim paint (forgetting the name). It looked like it was seriously high gloss, if that's what you want.

I'm going to use the Advance, as the salesperson at the store said he applied his sample with a cheap chip brush, the $1.00 kind..and it looked like a spray coat. Unreal. I also have a good groupon to use at the store...otherwise, I think just in the interest of research I would have bought some of the Ace, since the technology's the same, just to see what the difference is for price.

I used satin impervo on my trim, kitchen cabinets, bathroom cabinets and wainscoting. As to scrubable, I've had no problem keeping offwhite cabinets clean for the last year, no wear marks or things like that. I also bought a gallon of the Advanced because I wanted to do something in a dark color and Impervo could not be tinted that dark. The Advanced dried faster and I had to work fast not to get brush marks, compared to the Satin Imprevo. Not bad, just different. You just have to know it's going to do this and plan your work accordingly. I did the bookshelf in stages and letting it dry instead of trying to do it all at once where I'd have to be blending into half dry paint. I only used the Advanced to paint one book shelf and then decided I didn't want to change to a brown after all. I Had the gallon retinted to a near black that I plan on using on my dining room table and chairs. BTW - I have always sanded between layers of paint with the Satin Impervo waterborne. It made a big difference, but I was painting unfinished Oak. But I sand between layers on all painted cabinetry/furniture. I've done it with walls too - DH say's I'm anal about paint. . . I recently bought a gallon of alkyd enamel from SW for my entry. Now that was some very nice paint to work with! Drys with a non-shiny but rich finish (not they typical "flat" look). I put chocolate brown over a mustard yellow, and it covered easily. Did it all with a paintbrush too. I put a one part epoxy paint on my ceiling and really liked that, but I wanted a dark brown for the entryway and the salesman recommended I go with the alkyd as the epoxy did not come in a dark base. About flipped when I saw the price, but he gave me a good deal on it. Going forward, if I had a place where I wanted a durable paint, I'd pay the $90 a gallon for that.

been paint contracting for 33 years....I will take the old -timers anyday over a fresh-faced kid salesman at benny moore or sherwin.....YOU NEED TO ALWAYS USE AN OIL BASE PRIMER OUTSIDE. ...except for masonry......the oil base freezes the wood and makes it durable.......Yes, i like the v.o.c. laws, but there is no substitute for an oil- based primer.....for a deck I would use oil stain as a primer, not alkyd on walking areas. Its too soft......that old painter was right...good luck with your deck, and listen to us pro's and old timey painters, we've been there.

Thank you magnaverde and everyone again! My husband and I knew we had a great find in this house, but we are truly in awe of the people in this forum who have chimed in and said they really liked it. Thank you all! I think most people we know are actually a little confused by the style of the house and so were we beyond knowing it was modern, but we always knew from the first minute we walked in the front door that we loved it. I got a cheapo short shag rug to put down in next to the fireplace to see how it goes and it already looks better. I can really envision a big shag rug. I've already identified a couple of chairs that could go anywhere in the house so I'm on a roll. And jakabedy, thanks for your post and link. Yeah - I know the kitchen isn't in the MCM style but I didn't quite know what to do with it when we remodeled it. It didn't look like any traditional MCM kitchens that I had seen or I might have figured out to go with that style. Just had lots of plain straight wood and white formica counters (that I actually liked). I do miss that parquet floor though. It was filthy and old but such a great design. We tried to save it to reuse it in another area in the house but it was glued down so well we couldn't get any pieces to come out whole. It was way beyond just mere redecorating because of the smell of the old wood and the build up of dirt that I just could not remove without having to refinish every thing anyway. When I find the old pics I will post one as well. I saved the pictures in case some day when we have moved on someone wants to put it back the way it was.

@patriciacolwellconsulting Thank you...Yes!! Definitely want to redo the posts with fatter ones - too skinny and while the arches give us nice light inside we realize they look weird from the outside. The house was built by two brothers that we think they used what they had...💁🏻‍♀️😳 The gable. Yerrs- it needs balance - I feel like the other end of the house needs an addition to balance it! The house is a bit lopsided. Any thoughts on color?

thank you both...i'm really leaning toward the advance mainly because it is a sandable....i have a door that had some 'blocking' to the frame and the regal just peels off, it really doesn't harden well enough for trim molding, imo...

i'll ask the BM salesman about repainting the regal trim work (done about a year ago) with advance assuming the stairs turn out well

flyleft, i wasn't looking for super high gloss because i have semi-gloss everywhere else (i didn't want to accentuate any flaws in the older previously painted woodwork) i saw that the advance alkyd has a semi gloss, so i 'll ask the salesman about that as well

i'll need to prime first and the BIN shellac based primer seems to be well rec'd for this....i used Fir, so there aren't extreme amounts of knots in the wood, it's pretty smooth...i just want something that will really 'grab and hold' the paint once it is applied
