I think they are delicious. I open the can and remove the backbones, they just look disgusting, then I eat the fish. Delicious plain. My Mom used to lay them on white bread and eat them in a sandwich.

A saltine cracker and mustard goes good with canned sardines. Yum.

I am with Jodi...that is how I would eat them. You can get them already in mustard too. But I prefer to add my own.

I like the mustard sardines on a cracker with a little bit of sour cream and dill on top.

We ate them right out of the can when I was a child, probably with crackers, don't remember.

One of our cats had dental troubles, to get him to eat we bought sardines, didn't work for him but they sure did bring back memories! I used to go to lunch at a local restaurant, long out of business, that made a salad topped with sardines. It was called a Jerry Salad because one of the regular customers ordered his that way. . . I had long forgotten that but they sure were good.

Long time ago, you could buy sardines in a small jar with sour cram or something. They were delicious on a cracker. Or maybe it was herring?????

It's been years since I've had sardines! I had bought a couple of cans..and forgot about them until I was reading this post! Of course, the post flung a cravin' on me and I just had to pop the top on a can of them! I remember the cans having several little 3"-4" fish in them. This can had what looked like, cut up PIECES of sardines!

Are they packaged different now??

Anyway...I've always liked mine with Louisiana Hot Sauce and crackers!!

I haven't eaten sardines since I was a kid. My mother ate them and so did I. We ate them with saltines and mustard without taking the backbone out. Mom said that the backbone was soft and it was good for me so I ate it. LOL.

I remember how she would buy them by the dozen in a wrapped package. She really liked those things and when she was home in the summers from teaching we would eat them for lunch...I do not remember that my dad ate them. At least he was not there when we ate them. Well, I sneaked out a 12 can package of sardines out and fed them to the neighborhood cats...I remember that wind off lid and I cut my finger trying to get the lid off. My mother never could understand why all of a sudden we were attracting so many cats at our house. LOLOL...many years later I got a playful swat on my behind when I told her. ROFLMBO!!

I admire sardines as they sit quietly in their cans, causing no fuss, on the shelves of the grocery store. I find the unopened cans, out of arm's distance, to be the best way to appreciate them! Almost like a work of art...

Sardines are the perfect companion food for tuna. When I want a tuna sandwich for dinner my DH opens a can of sardines.

I eat them on hot buttered toast! Delicious!

Sardines my way. Brunswick Sardeins in Soybean oil with hot peppers. Take a saltine, put some real butter on it, then add a bit of chopped sweet vidalia onion, then top it with a sardine. Gobble it down and then take a few sips of icy cold premium beer.

I don't do the beer anymore, so I now drink water instead... but this is how I like Sardines best..

I don't eat them often but when I do, I squeeze on lemon juice and then eat them with Saltines.

I eat them on saltines. My cats go crazy when they smell them, so I pour the water from the can into 3 small dishes for them. Like others, my mom taught me to eat them when I was a child. Those soft bones are full of calcium and very good for you. Same as the back bones in canned salmon.

I agree - on Saltines. That's what we did when I was a kid; loved them then and love them now. However, when I take one out of the can I put it on paper towels to blot up as much of the oil as I can; I want to taste the fish, not the oil. Then I split it in half (lengthwise; easy to do) and lay it on a Saltine. I, too, eat the backbone; similar to that in canned salmon).

I have also put sardines on top of a rice cake that's got cottage cheese on it. So - rice cake, cottage cheese, then sardine. I know - probably sounds awful to some, but quite good and healthy, too. I don't buy sardines in mustard and have never thought of putting mustard on. I'll maybe try that, as I love mustard.

Mmmmm.....now I've got a craving for sardines!

When we were kids, we would eat them if my mom would take the "guts" out, and remove any trace of skin. Canned salmon as well had to have every vestige of skin taken out before we would touch it. The little bones in salmon were okay for some reason.

She loved to eat them from the can on crackers. She would get tired of having to pick them over so well for us, so started saving them for her snack only LOL.

Now they sell "Millionaires" which I believe are supposed to be skinless, gutless sardines. Might have to try them again some time.

I just looked at the sardine cans I bought. One is from Norway, one from Canada, and one from Morocco. Morocco seems out of place, somehow. :-)

The Moroccan sardines are skinless and boneless.

I also ate a lot of sardine sandwiches as a kid. Now when I have them, I mash with some mayo and chopped red onion, and maybe a little bit of mustard on the bread for a yummy sandwich.

Same as Country Bumpkin: place on a cracker, then put hot sauce on top. That's how we ate them growing up.

I love sardines, King Oscar brand for me.. I have them on a sandwich with lettuce, chopped red onion and mayo...sooo delicious.

I leave them on the shelf at the grocery!!! I use to love them and ate them all the time, but not anymore!!

I would say just feed them to the cat. :)

A couple years ago my friend stopped by the coffee shop with his pickup and bassboat. The lady who runs the coffee shop says..."Jessie, why don't you ever bring me a fish?

He says,,,"Hold on" and he walked out to the boat, lifted a nice 2 or lbs bass out of the live well and brought it in to her.

She says,,,,,,,,,,,,,"OHHHHHHHHHH NO,,,I want mine filetted and ready to cook"

Jessie went out again,,only this time he went to the gas station next door and came back with a bag, which he handed to her..."Says, there you go, filleted and on ice, hows that?

She opened the bag and there was a can of sardines resting on a pile of ice cubes.

My husband loves them occasionally for a snack. He buys the ones in mustard, or olive oil, or tomato sauce etc ......I know he uses condiments but not sure what.

When he was a young student in the AF, he was stationed in CT and used to go to NY by train. They of course, were dirt poor so they ate egg salad and anchovy sandwiches and drank Creme Sodas. I once made it for him by chopping them up in the egg salad and he said no no,......just lay them on top of the egg salad.......He ate it any way and said it was delish

I love sardines.
I take a small whole wheat wrap, spread with cheese whiz,add lettuce then a whole can sardines drained well. Roll up tuck in the ends in and enjoy. I put the cans in the dishwasher then throw them in the recycle bin

Hold my nose while DH eats them straight from the can,sometimes he has crackers with them.I always tell him to make sure to rinse the can and put it in the trash outside.Hate that smell!!!

Give the sardines to the cats and open a can of spam for me. (I know, not healthy.)

I love sardines in mustard sauce right from the can! I also like them on crackers. Those little bones are soft and very good for you becasue they contain a lot of calcium too!
