Identify bottomless 'pie pan?' help!

I recently found a huge pot at a thrift shop and inside there were other things that I was told had to do with canning and they included several pieces. Inside were two "bottomless pie pans" that were about 8 inch. They are made of a light weight aluminum(not disposable) I'm pretty sure. What in the world would this be used for. The lady said it was used in canning which I cannot imagine it's function. I suppose I could take a picture but I can describe it exactly as a pie pan with no bottom, like just a rim of a pie pan. Then there was also a pie pan with holes in the bottom...I'm certain that IS a perforated bottom pie pan and not used for canning...HAHAHA! Anyone know what a bottomless pie pan is used for?
