That makes me so sad, one of my really good clients is in Christchurch, he is from New Zealand.

I just can't help but think that we have done some irreparable harm to our planet.

Do I Need Another Surface to Lay Down Tile Over Wood Floor?
Q
Comments (2)
You need a minimum 1" of subfloor under tile. You cannot tile over the adhesive for a number of reasons. The adhesive needs to be as even as you can get it. Spaces(unevenness) create bounce and bounce will kill a ceramic tile floor. Adhesive is probably asphalt based. Older tile was a combination of vinyl and asbestos. You do not want to start banging, sanding or causing dust from this product. Pull up the sheet vinyl and screw and glue down a layer of 5/8" plywood. On top of that I would put a cement backer product(1/2 or 1/4") that was thinsetted and nailed /screwed down. If floor is level, you can tile. If not, level the floor. Ron

*Another* tree came down in my front yard today!

The tree still has two huge sections, so as long as they maintain okay we should be able to get a graft. I hope so. I Googled King apples myself, and here's some of what I got: KING APPLE Many old New England orchardists considered this choice apple for dessert, cider and storage. Fruits are uniformly large and flattened round, yellow background overlaid heavily with a dark red striping. Crisp white-yellow flesh with a fine blend of sugars and acids which produce an excellent cider. Fruit is not prone to scab. TOMPKINS COUNTY KING . Brought from New Jersey to New York in 1804 by Jacob Wycoff. Grown in Tompkins County, New York, and called the King of apples, for size and flavor. Fourth most popular New York apple in early 1900's. Flesh sometimes translucent, said to sweeten the apple. Primarily for cooking, in sauce, pies, cakes. That was interesting, as I didn't know its whole name. There's a Hyde King, too, but the picture of that one didn't look like my King. They are larger than most apples. We grow seven varieties of apples here. Unfortunately, this year's May freeze killed off all the developing fruit. Here's a picture of the Tompkins County King:

Low spots under laminate flooring laid down over concrete

We have a home whose floor was redone with Kensington Manor 12mm Tanzanian Wenge Laminate flooring laid down over concrete. Unfortunately they failed to completely level the concrete slab in a couple of places and there are voids under the flooring. I'm looking for a product I can drill small hole and inject into the space below flooring to stabilize it I've been looking at a product call Dri Tac Engineered Flooring Repair Kit. Can anyone confirm this is what I want to use; or make another suggestion? Thanks.

Are we headed for another shut-down?

Fogged up glasses = escaping breath. I use first aid tape to get the top of my mask closed all the way across. Of course this means it hurts when I eventually remove the mask after I get home because of the tape pulling at the delicate skin below my eyes. Meanwhile when I go out on top of the usual wearing of masks below the nose inside crowded stores, teams of completely uncovered workers on construction sites, uncovered outdoor dining creating curbside gauntlets and the pulling of masks completely down in order to use phones - whenever and wherever the phone user happens to be at the time - I see a lot of people with masks that fit so that their noses look like they are sitting in a row boat. As in open on top and with large gaps on each side of the nose, with only the tip of the nose covered. And often just barely at that. Apparently the point of view such behavior demonstrates is not in fact a latter day development, a condemnation of how things have become because I read in the spring about how there was the same problem in 1918. That is that Americans were actually told to distance and cover back then as well and because - same as now - there was a significant component that didn't cooperate a deadly pandemic developed. With one specific large outdoor political rally in particular that was held right after the looming problem had become recognized being considered a major contributor to the initial establishment and spread of the virus. Individuals taking seemingly careful precautions and becoming infected anyway shouldn't be a source of mystification when it is thought about the totality of what is involved with exposure. Because the death dust is out there being blown around to settle on every body and every thing that is within reach of each cloud of exhalation. So that a friend with medical training was taking a shower every day after coming home from work, early in the unfolding of the pandemic. And we have probably all seen the comical pictures of random people in China walking around in protective suits with jugs etc. covering their entire heads - a hysterical response, except was it really? For my part I managed to be moving around inside a crowded Cost Co during peak afternoon hours yesterday and then fall asleep on the living room couch afterward without bathing. Except for washing my face when I got home. While I was at the warehouse store standing in front of a display reading some product labeling an arm came around from behind me and grabbed a container of the goods and disappeared. I did not look to see how much face covering was employed as they walked away. For one thing I did not want to turn and present my face to the air where they had just been. But when they came up to me at the display they were right there, like maybe a foot away. In other news a research entity was granted a million dollars this past week to find out just how long the COVID virus remains viable on surfaces. And the body of a COVID victim that was for some reason kept around for a month was discovered to have still infectious particles in the lungs.

I just talked to a friend of mine from high school who went to see our other high school friend several months ago who lives in Christchurch, NZ.
Donna said she tried to call Betty but was cut off and then when she called again, the phone rang and rang and rang.
Please keep good thoughts for my friend and for others in that area who are in harm's way.

Hi guys ... yes we are fine at this end of the country. The earthquake is in Christchurch again.
They had a major quake on the 4th September and have had literally thousands of aftershocks in the last few months. The residents of ChCh have been under huge stress for months now and then just as things were getting back to normal, this huge quake strikes. It is a seperate shock, on a different fault line to the Sept one, very shallow and closer to the city than the previous one.
This one happened in the middle of the day so people are out and about in the city centre. The Sept quake struck at 4am on a Saturday morning so there were no fatalities then.

It's just been tragic listening to people ring into talk back radio describing what they've seen.

Thanks for all your prayers and good thoughts .... we feel quite helpless being so far away and we have a number of friends we havn't heard from. But Civil Defence have told people not to use their cell or landline phones unless it's an emergency due to the number of towers that are down and they don't want the lines jammed.

News just confirmed 17 fatalities and expected to rise.

If you would like me to try contacting anyone down there email me at ijdj@hotmail.com with their phone numbers and I can try calling when communications improve.

"I just can't help but think that we have done some irreparable harm to our planet."

I don't believe that earthqaukes are largely due to human activity. Earthqaukes were plentiful before humans developed into large populations and became major tool users. A study of earthquakes will show that much is unknown about them so far as predictability. Seismologists can fairly well identify suspect zones, but have not been able to exactly predict when a quake will happen.

If you view an earthquake data base, you will see that quakes occur every day somewhere over the globe. Many are small and not noticed by humans. Earthquake studies and structure and equipment design is required for nuclear power plant in the USA. Much of the rest of the world also address the same issue when planning a nuclear powered generating plant. Most of the quakes are clustered along the edges of major crustal plates, but a few major quakes have occured at mid-continent, for example, the New Madrid, Missouri, quake of 1811-1812.

What we have done is to build structures in known quake zones without regard to earth movements. For example, Haiti had no building codes or zoning in regard to earthquake and yet their Capitol sat in a danger zone. Even structures built to resist earthquakes will have damage, but more important is the manner in which they fail. A good structure will not collaspe and will provide means for the occupants to escape.

"I don't think humans can cause earthquakes."

There is one documented case of earth tremors due to human activity. It was a series of quakes in Colorado. These quakes came from a "water drive" in an oil and gas field. In a water drive, fluids, usually waste fluid from another oil well, is pumped down a well and into the oil bearing strata to force the remaning oil toward another well. In the Colorada case, it was found that small quakes could be turned on and off by the water drive. The water drive in this field was abandoned.

Fans in a football stadium caused an "earthquake" too, but those aren't "real" earthquakes.

The earth has quakes every day and has for billions of years.

I'm sorry, I did not mean that we did something directly to cause this event.
