Alvin - You may have sent me the wrong link, but that little blurb of info you posted is helpful. That sounds like the way I have been growing this plant. I know I tried a lot of different light levels and finally settled on lower levels since that's where it seemed to be the happiest. Again, I think it was our blasted hot summer that caused all the problems. Clara - Those are beautiful pics aren't they? Does anyone out here grow some of these? I've been tempted a few times, but never got around to buying any. This plant has history. 3-4 years ago there was a guy out here who rescued around 1000 orchid plants from the Baker & Chantry nursery in Washington state. If I remember correctly the owners had died and the property was being bulldozed along with the plants. He sent the rescued plants to forum members who requested them. This is one of those plants. When I received it, it was a single backbulb with a couple of roots and the start of a new growth. All that was written on the tags was the name and "probably cool?". It slowly grew for me and up until this summer had 5 nice sized PBs. I was hoping it would bloom soon. WC - Thanks for that link to the Mpls library. I do have a card, but rarely go there. It's nice to know I have this online option. At this point, I just want to see if this thing is going to survive. Still a green leaf and from what I can see of the roots, they look good too. K

Frank, she's already a beauty, and she's not fully open! Just wait until all the buds open! As I said, it was one of my favorites! Very prolific bloomer... although, all my attempts at pollinating failed. I'll catch it next bloom cycle. Sweet Lilian also proved to be very photogenic! I took the most photos of this particular variety. Viagrow... hahaha! So, what happens if the stem is erect for more than 4 hours? Should you consult a horticulturist? LOL! Larissa, in today's world, you sort of have to help your kids develop a thick skin so they're ready for whatever life throws at them. We're the type of parents that never shielded our kids from the uglier side of life... we were always very open, encouraging them to question the world around them, and to discuss things they weren't sure about. Life is tough... kids need to develop good coping skills! One of our favorite lines was, and still is: Life is full of choices... for every choice there is a consequence... think hard before making your choices! When our kids were teens, our house was the favorite hangout... there were always other kids at our house. They would all come over after school and hang out, play video games, listen to music... my fridge got a ton of mileage! I think we fed the neighborhood! You should hear some of the stories from parties at our house! Our motto was: Don't fall asleep before we do! Oh, the jokes we played on people! Ahh... great memories! Hilarious memories! We never had a lot of money, but we did have a lot of fun! Our kids have some awesome memories to take with them through life... that much is certain!

dreamgarden, Here's an old NYT article I dug up from January 1981. It's discusssing the Feds policy changes during October 1979. It's a time I'll certainly never forget! In October 1979, I was at Notre Dame University attending my first American Bankers Association class of a 3-year program. We attended Notre Dame for a week's worth of intense classes & then peformed work at home for a year; then back to another university & another year of home assignments...then, one more year at another university followed by a presentation given at the end of our third year. Prime changed every few days...sometimes more frequently. We were studying the secondary market. Trading terminals had been set-up for our use. We were each given $1M of Monopoly money to trade with. Every single one of us was wiped out totally within TEN MINUTES because of the prime rate changes. It changed 3 or 4 times that day alone!! I was doing construction lending at the time. My borrowers paid a rate that floated over prime, usually 3%. I can clearly remember construction loan interest rates hitting 15%+. One of my builders told me it would be cheaper for him to build the house on his VISA card! He wasn't far wrong. Permanent mortgages were 12%+ on the open market. I had a subdivision to sell out in Thornton, CO of over 400 homes. We offered 'special' financing at 10.5% in an attempt to get those houses sold. I also remember the 1970's recession & gas shortage. My ex-husband & I took turns taking a day off work to wait in line for gas. I was in line at the station just off Alicia Parkway in Laguna Hills, CA mid-week...the line was probably 1/2 mile long. Suddenly, we all heard a sharp noise & knew immediately what had happened. Frustrations had reached critical mass & somebody had shot another person who had gotten gas just before the station owner put out the "No More Gas" sign. During the 1970's recession & housing bust...REITS failed by the hundreds & the market tanked. That's when I first learned about work-outs. The world is not ending today. We're going through a tough time, sure, but it's not time to buy wheat in 50 lb. buckets. The sun came up today & it will go down tonight right on schedule. In a few years you'll be looking back at this timeframe & remembering where you were when the Dow plunged. By the time you've been thru a few recessions they aren't as unnerving. Each has its own characteristics. IMO, this one will be remembered more for banking hitting the skids than subprime. Just like we remember the 1980's for the S&L crisis rather than the policy changes that precipitated the problems. Yes, I've assumed you've not been through many recessions. If you have & have been this skittish...I don't see how you've survived?? Deep breathes. This too shall pass. /tricia PS Your posts are very hard to read with all of those strange characters. for those that love Harlan Coben he has a new book out called Shelter with a new main character, it is Mickey Bolitar, the nephew of his regular main character Myron. We met Mickey in the last book by Harlan Coben. This will begin a new series of Mickey Bolitar books. Shelter: A Mickey Bolitar Novel They have also now re-released 2 of Harlan's first books they are Play Dead and Miracle Cure. We LOVE him so I had to get all 3 of these.

I do think it's a very uneven exchange of Christmas presents.
