Can you recommend one that is free and does a good job?

I use AVG Free. It comes highly recommended by the folks over at The Computer Help Forum.

That sounds like Virut virus lets hope not though..... Unfortunately, the virus infects every .exe and .scr (actually an executable) file on your system, and when you scan with a virus scanner, it will normally delete it as uncleanable. Eventually you end up loosing more and more files. The only viable alternative is to format the system. You will need to backup your important files before a format and reinstall, but you can not backup any .exe or .scr files, because they are infected. Good luck...

I personally use the free AVAST but have installed the free MSE for others both are great choices. Just make sure you use the proper tools to remove the antivirus programs on the pc now because you can have real problems if there is more than one. Most AV companies have a special removal tool. Antivirus Product Removal Tools If he put the trial version of Kaspersky on I sure hope he fully removed the Trend Micro first. IF not you will need to fully remove both of those. Using appremover may be your best bet and would be what I would do. free AppRemover utility this link tells all that appremover will remove Supported Applications Using AppRemover

The clamwin program did find some trojans but doesnt seem to have the capability to delete the infected files. by the way i am using windows XP home edition. The computer maintance company for our business computers installed the free AVG in our company computers and our home computer. They highly recommend it to all of their customers. We have never had any issues. It's set to run the scans during the early AM when we are sleeping.

Over the years I've used, well a lot of different antivirus programs, both pay and free. I use and recommend AVG. Many like Avast but I had too many problems on certain machines with it, and since it's heavier on resources it didn't work well for most of my applications. Antivir from Avira has a loyal following too. You could try and see which you like best. When it comes down to it, the bigger name programs all do a good job. It's more important to have, use and most importantly update a program regularly. Beyond that comes a lot of personal preference.
