No experience with Vonage, but my sister has the Majic Jack which is similar. She loves it. There are a few hiccups because of the internet provider she uses, and she has an older computer which sometimes causes problems with delays in answering calls. She chose that because she had a friend that LOVED her Vonage service. But the Majic Jack was only a one-time payment per. She was told that the difference is that vonage rents the service from other carriers, whereas Majic Jack owns their lines (or whatever they are called). The modem in my computer stopped working. When I get it fixed, I'll probably try Vonage or the Majic Jack. My computer is faster than my sister's so it might work better.
My brother has had Vonage for about 6 mos. and loves it. His wife needs to call the UK relatives and there's no additional charge. He is a "phone guy" (worked ATT & subsidiaries forever as a lineman and installer -- ie. "knows the biz") and has no complaints with Vonage.
