Prolia ?????

Dr. said he's gonna prescribe a twice a year injection of Prolia for my osteoporosis. I'm afraid of this medicine because it's so new on the market. Anybody here use this? If so.....please let me know what you think about it. Thanks in advance !! : )

I opted not to take it for reasons similar to your concerns. Why did your doctor recommend this particular drug? How bad is your osteoporosis?

I believe it is a myth that too much protein intake causes bone loss - this summarizes the point: Gabe Mirkin, M.D.: Studies done many years ago suggested that eating a lot of protein increases calcium loss in the urine and therefore it was thought that eating protein weakens bones by taking calcium out of them. However, recent studies show that eating protein increases calcium absorption so the extra calcium in the urine comes from increased absorption, not from being take out of bones. Reports in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (Volume 78, Issue 3, 2003) show that eating plenty of protein and lots of foods from plants helps to keep bones strong. Most scientists now feel that a very low-protein diet can cause osteoporosis, while a moderately high-protein diet may help to prevent it.

No experience with this particular situation but know that when it comes to hormone supplementation, bio-identical makes the most sense (ETA: if bio-identical means natural not synthetic hormones. I'm in Canada and don't know how much our regulations vary with the USA when it comes to doctor-prescribed hormonal therapies.). Don't neglect weight-bearing exercises in your health equation. (No need for a gym for these. A simple routine of body weight exercises can be done at home and walking is weight bearing as well.) From the Health Harvard website (italics mine): "Numerous studies have shown that strength training can play a role in slowing bone loss, and several show it can even build bone. This is tremendously useful to help offset age-related declines in bone mass. Activities that put stress on bones can nudge bone-forming cells into action. That stress comes from the tugging and pushing on bone that occur during strength training (as well as weight-bearing aerobic exercises like walking or running). The result is stronger, denser bones. And strength training, in particular, has bone benefits beyond those offered by aerobic weight-bearing exercise. It targets bones of the hips, spine, and wrists, which are the sites most likely to fracture. Thanks for all of the input. Part of my concern is that my only "risk" factors are a slender build and drinking one cup of coffee a day, so there is nothing to cut out. I've been taking 2000 mg of D3 for about a dozen years in addition to my daily multivitamin. I walk an average of 4 miles a day, much of it carrying groceries. After finding out about osteopenia in my neck, I've changed my daily headstands to handstands. I do seated and supine exercises wearing my rollerskates which weigh 3 1/2 pounds each. Maybe I need to move into actual gym weights and add calcium + magnesium to my vitamin program. I eat dark, leafy greens, but I can always eat more. And maybe I just say, hey, I'm 66 and this is the reality of getting older. Up until a few years ago, I had an insurance policy with a $10,000 deductible. I went to the doctor when I got sick, paid out of pocket and the only tests I got were when I was a volunteer research subject. I never even knew I had this problem until I got that dexa scan test. Maybe I've had it for years. All I know is that I don't want to spend even three weeks feeling as emotionally distraught as I felt on that drug.

Nope. Not for me. Too new. But then, none of these supposed bone builders are for me. A proven way to build bone is to do weight-bearing exercises. A side effect there is better circulation!

My sister had her first prolia shot a few months ago, too soon to know how helpful. I'm not sure how she and her doctor arrived at that choice, it wasn't one my doctor suggested for me. But then my sis and I have different body types, weights, blood pressure, all kinds of things. We're sisters and not very much alike physically.

She's had no side effects at all, and I have not either with the Forteo.

If you are uncertain about Prolia, why not just ask your doctor for a different treatment with a longer proven track record? Also ask why he's recommending Prolia over a different treatment.

Asking random people on an internet forum isn't really going to give you useful information.

When one is advised to use a new, somewhat un(long-term)proven drug, one wants some feedback ... whether positive ... or negative.

People here are pretty responsible, and it seems to me a good place to run an idea like this by a number of interested eyes, some of whom may send messages to a brain that has some useful information from folks a few of whom may have had experience with this unknown entity that has been suggested that one puts into one's precious body ... by a doc ... who, in all likelihood, isn't putting it into his/her body.

Don't forget - doctors get a 'kick back' for drugs they prescribe. They tend to prescribe the one with the most rewards to them. I used to work in a doctor's office, so, at least 20 years ago, that's how it worked.
