NYC expecting a big one tomorrow

DS called as he was leaving work early. His Manhattan office announced that they will be closed tomorrow because of the storm due in tonight and all day tomorrow. People were leaving early evening rather than risk working late. So he was going to get some groceries and was stopping by William-Sonoma to shop on the way home too. I told him to buy ingredients for a pot of homemade soup.

Watching a big snow storm do its magic when you don't have to go out at all is one of those special pleasures.

We moved to California to get away from all the winter weather, but a pretty new storm, pristine in the early morning, is a special beauty of its own--especially if you don't have to go out.

Yeah, but eventually--whether it's the next day or the day after--you have to go out. :-)

I loved snow when I had a husband to make paths for me (and to share the winter experience with), and no job to go to. But these days I feel that snow makes everything hard. The roads will be "cleared" but will remain potentially icy for days. And if I had two feet or more of it on the ground like some of those places south of me, I'd worry about flooding when it all melts in the spring.

We're expecting snow tonight, and a total tomorrow of about 14", with more in the Poconos where my kids work. So although I'm not planning to go to work tomorrow, I'm worried about their commutes.

On the plus side, the bird feeders are filled, I have lots of firewood stacked on the porch, and bags of pet food and cat litter are lined up in the pantry.

Now if I can just find my emergency corded phone.....

I hope DS's office will close down for the storm, too.
I bet DDIL wishes they still lived in Tokyo.

Puglvr, I'm starting to wish I'd never found this forum. There's a whole world of hoyas out there that I never knew existed until now, viewing the pictures posted on this web. They're beautiful, exciting, exotic, intoxicating and downright addictive. Even more so than orchids, and orchids are like peanuts. You can't have just one. My mom had a hoya pubicalyx (its 40 or 50 years old now: mom's 84) so I appreciated mine, but didn't have proper respect. We have to continuously cut everything back in south Fla or it takes over. The saying is to cut when the blade is sharp, and always keep the blade sharp. I only cut to give cuttings and am fertilizing the base more now. She has another dozen or 20 umbels in the works. Have you read about the beer formula? What are your opinions about that?

I found this out, by accident, it was during Christimas and I was going outside with my sheets, to cover plants, it was suppost to be in the 20's in the morning. My husband said why don't you just leave the lights on all night. I covered the plants in the back yard, and kept the lights on in the front. When I woke up, the back yard, I lost alot of plants because the wind blew off some of my sheets, the front yard was perfect. That year after Christmas, I went to Wal-Mart and they had tons of net lights left over, I got them for 75% off. I use two sets on each flowerbed. So far our trees don't look that bad. They just look pretty. It's a layer of ice and then a whole bunch of sleet. I think we have about an inch total. I talked to my family in Arkansas a little while ago. My brother's house doesn't have power, but my dads still does. They are expecting the bad stuff to come in tonight. They have a fireplace and a generator so they'll be ok.
