PLEASE help with family room

Hi - We're trying to make a decision on what we're going to do with our family room. As you can see, we're dealing with a lot of stained wood. The walls are real paneling that are almost an inch thick. We've painted all of the stained wood throughout the rest of our house so I'm sure we'll continue but we're not sure what color to use for the paneling on the wall. The family room pics are before we moved in but hopefully they'll do for now. If you need more just let me know and I'll upload this evening when I get home.

I also included a picture of the kitchen so you can see the current color. The wall color will be a blue/gray that we haven't decided on...carpet will be replaced with either BR-111 Taraken Teak or Angico Walnut.

So, what would you do with the wood walls? We'll also paint the built-in's white that are located in between the french doors...would you paint the mantel? We may end up refacing the fireplace with stacked stone..just depends on how this turns out. We tend to be more contemporary if that helps..okay here are the pics. Also, the colors will continue down the hallway to the garage.

I just have to say that is one fantastic kitchen. Is it the original cabinets painted or brand new cabinets? I'd also love to know what your granite it? Oh yeah, we supposed to be looking at you're family room aren't we :)

I would paint the bottom paneling the same color you painted the trim in the rest of the house, which it looks like I see a little piece of white trim in the kitchen and I would paint the mantle the same color. If you can afford to reface the fireplace, I think stacked stone would be gorgeous. Someone on here did a mockup of a stacked stone fireplace and it was so pretty. I'll have to see if I can find it.

Thanks for the input everyone - I really need it...and thank you sheilaaus for the nice comments. Yes the half wall is the same color as the big wall - it is so much more appealing in person. I'll have to check out the SW strip with Malted Milk on it - I don't beleive I have that one. ...and yes parma the carpet is killing me - but can't replace it (it's only 2 years old). As for the green you mentioned in the Poppy picture, the darker green on the stems is actually on the opposite wall - this picture shows a little of it. ...and tfm, I will also check out SW Whole Wheat (someone else mentioned that color to me as well). Hopefully there is a paint color that will tie into my spectrum of color.

I am in agreement with all...the Salmon color really is not that nice of a wall color. I would paint all of the walls in the color that you want (Seapearl) and will make the room feel so much larger than if you had the Salmon on the wall. I would leave the bookcase white and not add the Salmon on the back wall....you would have to be looking at this color all of the time. To compromise (and not knowing what the sofa or other seating will look like), maybe you can find a print or solid utilizing the Salmon color and make custom decorative pillows....this Salmon can work on a beige or gray sofa, pairing it with some green tones, and voila! Everyone's happy!

The most versatile seating is usually a 3-seat sofa and 2 upholstered armchairs or swivel chairs. Loveseats are the bane of good arrangements, so don't go there, even if the salesperson pushes you to do so. Float the sofa where you have your love, and place two swivel chairs right and left of it, facing each other over a coffee table. Lower your TV as much as possible so you get a better viewing angle. Put a real tree/plant in the corner by the window, and move the 4 photos to a grouping of four centered 5' above the floor on the right wall where you have the one big item.

Hi Laurie - The kitchen turned out a lot better than we thought. It's the original cabinets that we refinished using General Finishes Java gel stain. There were a few cabinet modifications (above cooktop and around fridge) and we're very happy. The granite is white delicatus and we LOVE it!

I never thought about painting the bottom half all white..hmmmm, something to think about! We have two black dogs and kids will be here soon so I'm not sure. I think it will look okay and we'll be using SW Duration so it should be okay.

Our formal living off the main entrance..it was flowery wallpaper like the formal dining..both rooms are this color now and we may use it in the den..can't remember the name right now...

I would paint all the wood white and the walls a color that flows with the other colors of your house. I agree-stacked stone overlay on the fireplace would be gorgeous.

We just painted our "paneling" to look like white wains coating. You have a chair rail, add a base board, paint it all white. You are already going with white wood trim in other areas. I would continue. A color that coordinates with the rest of the house, possibly a color pulled out of the fireplace either the one you now have or what ever you change it to, would go on the walls. I wouldn't mess with the brick myself, but I believe yours is classic so always in style.

Arcy - Did you paint your paneling the same sheen as the trim? We were originally going to paint it the wall color but are seriously thinking of going white after reading the responses...just not sure if it should be semi-gloss like the trim or a matte finish like the walls.

Paint it all. Including the brick on the fireplace (a different finish of course) -- until you can switch to stacked stone.

We painted all of the woodwork here (living room panelling, moldings, all cabinets) in high gloss white. Worked out great!

We used semi gloss for it all. We do still have the original '70's dark wood work around the windows and door frames. We are due for new windows so are waiting that one out. Good question in the sheen, right now I would say they appear to be the same, so the window trim must have a semi glass poly on it? Our room in is a walk out basement. We really love the effect, TOTALLY opposite of what we had.
