Help with lighting/paint choices...long sigh

We are in the final stages of redoing my 16 yo son's bedroom. It's quite small as you can see so I'd like something light. All the trim will be linen white, including what is still showing as stained. The entire slanted wall with skylight was wooden and stained dark so it already looks so much brighter now that it's plastered. So, what type of lighting should I use, just bedside table lamp and desk lighting, or should I put up a wall sconce on the wall near the door(do people still use those single bedroom wall sconces)? We are putting up a ceiling fan without a light kit on the small flat ceiling.I thought about adding recessed on the same small ceiling but thought it won't look right. So that's the lighting questions. Now I need help with paint choices. I like it when rooms flow, so we just painted the hallway outside of the bedroom powell buff and the bath nearby is northampton putty. Again, it's for a 16yo who will most likely be heading off to college soon so I was looking at something fairly neutral, not electric blue like it was before, something on the idea of BM's brandon beige, nantucket breeze, or florentine plaster (though I can't seem to find FP on the BM color deck any longer). Looking at the room pics would you suggest painting the entire slanted wall the same wall color paint or ceiling paint? Any advice/opinions are most welcomed! Oh, and his furniture is cherry.

My DS has an attic bedroom that is all angles like yours. We painted the walls and ceiling all the same color, which IMO makes the room feel larger because it deemphasizes all those angles. As far as lighting... in our master bedroom we don't have an overhead light -- when you flip the lightswitch by the door, a floor lamp goes on. In addition to that, we have lamps on each nightstand and that's it, and for me, that's enough.

Sorry I can't help with specific paint colors. I do have the BM fandeck but it's in my car right now!

Thanks Sue, I hadn't thought about painting it all the same color, but it is such a small ceiling that I definitely think I'll consider that! I also like your idea of flipping the switch and having a lamp go on instead of putting in a wall sconce.

Hey Sooz! First things first... * Did you get rid of all the wallpaper glue/residue?? * If not, I'd wait a couple days for the primer to "lock-in" any glue that may be trying to ooze it's way through the new primer. * "Full adhesion & hardness" plays more towards if you're painting a REAL slick surface like tile or glass. If takes a little more time to form the bond to tile, etc. * If you need to sand your primer, like for doors/trim, a day or two wait is appropriate. * Take a GOOD look at your dried primer film. If your walls are unusually thirsty, and it seems your primer has "disappeared", do a second full coat. * You MAY notice areas to repair at this point...check carefully! Example-there may be rough spots that are more visible now. Feather-sand/repair, and re-prime. * After (possible) 2nd coat of primer, let it dry 2-3 hrs. and paint away!! >>> Nothing wrong with either brand. I'd use a Satin or Semi-gloss in a main bath. Do you have/use a bath-fan?! >>> TWO FULL coats of paint though!!! Primer doesn't substitute for a coat of paint!! >>> Use good tools too. Cheap-o rollers/brushes sabotauge a good paint. Also: The word "Enamel" is meaningless. All it means is "any coating that forms a hard surface...". But it "sounds" good! Faron

I'm not a fan of lighted kitchen cabinets. For some reason I just think it's overkill....probably because you wouldn't see them in a vintage home. Here's a couple photos of our non-lighted, sort of organized (but not really) cabinets. We're waiting for a couple missing parts before we can fully load the kitchen. The tall cabinet just has stuff "tossed" in there.

I read all comments & none were about the mantel. Is it possible to add a much bigger wooden mantel? You said you were getting rid of the gold around fireplace - is it possible to change FP to a new one that is also larger? I do like the wall & I don’t mind the planters. I might’ve changed them when doing the floor but if you don’t want to add plants to them I think capping them is best - maybe with something to match the new mantle?

I totally LOVE your chandelier! It is graceful and elegant. It was the first thing I noticed in your photos that I thought was beautiful! It sounds like you recently chose it especially, so if you love it, too, don't remove it! It does look out of place in its current context, which may be why you are receiving advice to remove it, but if you want your kitchen to move in that stylistic direction, use it as your inspiration piece! The black lantern lights over the island are not congruent with the chandelier. The naked bulbs are as blinding and unyielding as Walmart's parking security lights, and my eyes seek the relief of the shaded chandelier bulbs. If choosing to swap out lighting, I would definitely change those lights first. I know naked bulbs are the current fad, but that doesn't make them comfortable to live with or a good idea!

First of all I love the room. I love slanted wall and I think they make the room feel cozy. I also love the stained casing around the window. Especially for a boys room. Are you set on painting it?

A small room does not necessarily mean a light color. A midtone color might help the room feel cozy and comfortably.

pps7 - yes, we are painting the remaining casing and the little closet/storage area linen white as well. I was soooo tired of seeing all that darkness when the whole slanted wall was also stained dark that we just wanted to freshen it up and go light. Can you recommend a neutral midtone color? Thanks!

Hmm, I painted our smaller guest room last year. We don't really use it for guests, it's the dogs sunbathing room. I'll stick a few photos here because even though it's a small room, and I doubt that it's much larger than your room, I didn't choose a very light color for it. (I did do a white ceiling but hey, I just like white ceilings.)

Thanks ksoxgrl, they're very good kids. Yes, I'd like to come back as a dog that belonged to someone who would treat me the way I treat those two! :-)
