Update to Custom Entertainment Unit

Hi Everyone

I thought I would post an update to the custom entertainment unit my husband built for our media/game room. Again, if you remember this was one of my DH first big projects and he used paint grade wood thinking we would paint the unit black. However, after he finished it, he really wanted that stained look. So, I found a painter that did a faux. I'm amazed that this is paint! The inside shows the base color and the rest was done with glazes. The doors look a little orange in this pic but in real life they are great. I love the results. Now I just have to find window treatments and decorate the shelves.

WOW! First, what an amazing talent your hubby had for his first big project. It looks as though he's been building furniture for years. And I'd encourage everyone to click on your photos to expand them, because the finish is just as incredible. Absolutely beautiful!

Great job with the photoshop! Both are nice, but I prefer the height of #2. brutuses - I have that same exact photo saved as an example of the entertainment unit I'd like to have made for my living room. Are you having yours custom made also? I haven't even begun to get quotes yet. I'd love to see a photo of yours when it's done. It sounds like the changes you've made will be perfect!

I'm sorry, but it's late, or should I say early, and I'm finally tired, but my brain is no longer working so I can't visualize what you mean. I'd highly recommend getting some graph paper, either online or the real thing, and drawing out your plans. I did the drawing below for our fireplace wall using Windows Paint on graph paper I found Googling "graph paper". I think it was on a student math site. You'll have to look close to see the lines of the graph paper since it only shows around the edges now. EACH LINE REPRESENTS THREE INCHES.

Annette, you need a *bigger* armoire! lol Mine has 3 doors. The two on the left open and that's where I have the tv. I had someone add the shelves. One holds a 40" tv the other holds books. The door on the right has drawers where I keep a lot of decorating stuff. It's a French Anitque, and the type with three doors are not as easy to find as two door. It was probably less expensive at the antique store rhan a new cabinet would have been. Consignment/antique stores, an estate sale, or an auction are your best bets. Ikea shelves will break down from the weight of the books after a period of time. That's been DD 's experience. You need solid wood.

IMO an outdoor entertainment center should be in a protected area and for sure not in direct sunlight , since we watch T.V in the heat of the day outside with ours.

What a beautiful job! Who would've guess that is paint grade wood. And your dh did a fantastic job on the building of it! He should sell his work. It's something to be proud of :-)

I'm am so happy you didn't paint it black! It looks great. Post photos when you finish the room too because I can't wait to see how the unit looks all pulled into a space.

Your husband (and your painter!) deserve a kiss.

Awesome on both jobs..looks like a custom hand rubbed finish..well guess it was...LOL, definitely hands on..
