I'm sure it was a manufacturer of mattresses saying that! lol Like you should replace your bras every 6 months... I've heard that one too!

Mine is 19 years old. We got a topper for it and it's very comfortable.

We replaced our this year, out old set was at least 21 years old.

My mattress is 22 years old. I added a topper about five years ago and, for about $100, have a mattress that feels like it is brand new. BTW, I've always kept an inpenetrable cover on my mattress so I don't worry about skin cells or dust mites.

Our mattress is 20 years old later this year and it is still providing great support. We did put a memory foam topper on it a few years ago (DH fell in love with our memory foam mattress in our motorhome). I must quickly add we spent a fortune on the 20 years old very top of the line set.... and it has served us very well.

was going to say we vac and turn the mattress, but did replace it about 4 years ago...learned that lesson from the motel dh had to "live" in before we could join him, and noticed the mattress' all had a date and which way they should be written on them...

Ummmm.....I hate to admit it. I've never (yet) met a mattress I loved. I've had a few mattresses over the past 10 or so years (yes, I know I've wasted money) and still wake up in varying degrees of pain. Awful - I hate the money I've put into mattresses and am reluctant to do so again because I know I'll still not get one that is right for me.

The last one I got, about 4 years ago, is a "Black" ... I can't remember the brand offhand. Paid very good money. It cripples me. AND it's about a gazillion of inches thick so I only have one set of sheets that fit it and it's so heavy I can't turn it.

Just shoot me.

We've been happy with Verlo mattresses all our married lives -- getting close to the big Five-O. These are made to order by a store that started near Chicago an has spread.

We've always bought a pair of extra-long twins to use together as a European King (nearly square). When we bought new a couple years ago we bought just below the top of the line because the 'top' mattresses were too heavy to flip and turn, and because I guessed we'd have accumulated enough dust mites before the 10-year warranty was up.

That 8 year myth is being promoted in the mattress company commercials. I am surprised by how many people believe it. Just like the spice companies telling you to throw out your spices every year and the baking soda company telling you to dump a box of it down the drain to freshen it. How gullible are people?????

We're on mattress number three in thirteen years.

This time we bought a tempurpedic knockoff. The BEST purchase we ever made. We finally wake up pain free and well rested. :)

No more innerspring mattresses for us!

We bought a new mattress & box springs when we moved to our new house 6 years ago, and recently bought a new mattress but
kept the box springs we already had. Before that I really can't recall how long we had each mattress....

suzique, dear heavens, I am so sorry. Your message of pain really made me jump. That's not fair. Here's an idea:

I have a sofa in my den with a wonderful slide out, very comfortable leather recliner seat that I got from Jennifer Convertables. The seat and back ratchet forward as you sit at fine increments so you can stop at many positions and end up almost lying flat like you would in a bed if you choose too at that position I am asleep in a minute with no choice. This has helped my body find a more comfortable pitch. Also, when you can't stop coughing and maybe have pneumonia symptoms it will let you get to a position where your chest is straight up or vertical so you don't strain yourself when you have to get upright to cough.

Just a thought that might help. You can try it out at a store. I know people have told me mine is better than they have known. And they make recliner chairs.

I have had this for many years and it has lasted and been a true savior.

I just thought it was an awful ploy, when I heard the 8 year "rule".

I (we, ex and I) bought new mattresses, when we moved, or he thought he needed it for his back.

When I went solo, I house sat for a long time. The mattress there was AWFUL! Just awful. It had valleys... and was tough to sleep on. But I didn't have to pay any rent. Then, when I moved in my first apartment I ordered a mattress made for me. Yes, there is a place here in OKC, where they make mattresses. Fortunately they held it for me, when I had that water problem. I then got it, when I moved in to this apartment.

It is so good to sleep on. I thank my lucky stars, to have bought it every morning.

I had my waterbed mattress over 15 years and I am happy to report I went ahead a few weeks ago and bought my Sleep Number, adjustable bed.
I love it. I really do.
I had been having so much back pain. I just raise my legs a few inches and I can immdediatly feel the tension loosen.
If I am lying in bed alone, I pick my head up as well.
No more 3 or 4 pillows to watch TV and no more pillow under my legs to sleep.
It has a wonderful pillowtop and with a nice mattress pad and sheets, I feel like I am staying in a top end luxury hotel!
My sleep number so far is 35.

Mine is about 15 years old, the second one I've owned in my adult life. It is looks brand new and I hope I never have to buy another one.

We just bought a Cal King temperpedic last week! It replaces a Cal King pillowtop that was probably 10 years old. I was awakened during the night by aching hips and could not find a comfortable position and so I was "tossing and turning all night" (just like the song). With the new mattress, I sleep through the night and it is a joy! I did have to fight for it, tho, since hubby didn't want to spend the money.

No commercial - Consumer Reports Mag in shopping tips for different types and brands mattresses....

"Mattresses don't come with expiration dates, but if your mattress is more than eight years old, you might want to consider a replacing it."

Mine will be 12 this summer, I just looked up the purchase date.

We are in the process of getting a new King size bed for our second bedroom... We had considered a temperpedic type, but after sleeping on one in Chattanooga, we decided not to.... it was soooooooooo hot !! We had the heat turned to 72� in the room, and we both really sweated on that thing..
We are opting for a regular firm mattress... Sealy or Serta I think... Larry will have the final say... He doesn't like my wonderful "sleeping on a cloud" pillow top... He says it is made for a princess, not a man.. LOL Oh well..
The best mattress I ever had was one I had custom made for me in Florida.. and it lasted over 25 years.. we only got rid of it because it was a regular size and we wanted a larger bed..

Good question, I think mine is about 11 years old. I think it's time to buy a pillowtop cover. My daughter has one on her twin bed and it's very comfy.

Chloecat, what brand did you get? Like Momrox's hubby, mine doesn't want to spend the money so I'm looking into the knock-offs as well.

On the farms in the 40s - shared a double of indeterminate age with younger brother (don't remember if he kicked).

Six years in dorm - not sharing a single ... sometimes in top bunk ... and they were also of indeterminate age.

Four years in three houses/beds in Korea - mattresses not near new.

A year in bed in preacher's house in Ithaca, N.Y. - bed also of indeterminate age: they don't tend to advertise age, you may have noticed?

Back in Korea, had a double brought (new?) from Canada five years earlier by a colleague. Slept alone for a year, then shared with new wife for four.

Mission-owned house in Toronto for a year - indeterminate age, again.

Six years in church-owned houses, mattresses didn't advertise (or even provide info on the q t) their ages.

Rental house for a year - don't recall anything about that mattress' age - or pedigree.

Shared house with an old lady for four years - she gave me the bed when she gave up housekeeping - still have it.

Double bed in church-owned house for 5 years - had pick of three or four: don't recall whether I tried any except the usual one.

Rented house for a year ... then in a hotel for about three ... shared house with another old friend (female) for a couple of years, another rented for a year or so, in another rental for about 15, using the single bed gifted from the first old lady with whom I boarded, brought it with me to the farm.

When I stayed with Uncle after his wife's death, slept in her single bed, after his death 8 years ago tried his - he said there was a depression into which his sore hip fit, but I couldn't find it ... back to sleeping in his wife's bed, who died 10 years ago about now.

No complaints with any of 'em.

Mine is 20 years old and I need a new one. It was only average quality when I got it. Now it has a valley in it. I used to flip it and change ends regularly but stopped doing that.

When you buy a new mattress, do you also buy a new box spring? My box spring looks perfectly fine. I guess if I get a foam or Sleep Number bed, I'd have to get a new box spring, but if I stick with an inner spring, I don't see why I would need it.

We bought a new mattress four years ago, but didn't replace the box spring, and we love it. The mattress companies want you to believe you need to have a matching set. I don't think it makes much of a difference.

Our mattress is 16 years old and just as comfortable as the first day, love it still.
