How often do you have to replace 42 w CFLs?

I know people recommend that you replace fluorescent bulbs, the big T8s and T12s, pretty often. But I was wondering about my CFLs - I have 42w bulbs. How often do I need to replace them, in terms of the bulbs not putting out nearly as much light as when they were new? Thanks, JOHN

That is a book still being written, John. Welcome to the cutting edge. Most of us have yet to reach the first year with our CFL's. I have more than two years with them but my first year was spent at the 23W level. I think if you can get a year out of the bulb its probably as good a time as any to plan to replace it. They are said to last 5 to 7 years in household use. Some of us have seen these bulbs burn out for one reason or another in three months.

Hey, John,

Good to hear from you. After about a year, my 23W and 42W are going strong, after a couple of the 23 burned out right away. I'm itchy, though, wondering if they're as effective as they were.

Anyone with a light meter happen to do any baseline measurements w/ their CFLs awhile back?

I'm sure I'm not the only one who falls closer to the opposite end of the "never replace furniture" spectrum. I haven't gone a year without buying at least a couple of new pieces of upholstery. I am kind of a furniture snob, so I buy good quality made in the USA only, but I get tired of things pretty quickly. I'm in the industry, so I see so many new products and designs. I sell some on Craigslist (usually making a little profit in the process) or simply move to other rooms. I buy new and used. It's just furniture. I don't feel an emotional attachement. I am not a big fan on vintage or antique furniture style or comfort. Re-upholstery has gotten so outrageously expensive. I know it's labor intensive skilled labor and a shame to see another industry lost, but often it doesn't make financial sense. I don't just toss my old furniture in the landfill. BTW, there is still a furniture-making industry that employs thousands of American workers. They need our business too!

Never use one. I don't often replace my phone either. My Galaxy S4 is 3 years old. I figure phones are built to be, well , phones. So I don't get all that after market stuff for them. The phone I have is white on the back. it looks fine, works fine. Hangs around various surfaces in my house and in a side pocket of my purse when I'm out. I do put it in a cell phone wallet thing with my keys and ID when I go for a bike ride, a walk with the dog or out riding horses that I can clip to my belt loop. If the dog and I are out training it rides in the treat pouch. I take how the phone feels and weighs in my hand into consideration when I choose a phone so a cover defeats the purpose for me. Been checking out the new S7s and they feel a bit rough around the edges to me. May it's the whole metal thing. Maybe would go with a bumper like Elmer mentioned if I decide to get one. Have to go out and play with one at a store where it isn't tethered. The tether may be making it feel "off" to me with the added weight from the pull back..

DLM2000-GW I laughed out loud at your comment about I Love Lucy. Yes, that can happen. First the easiest thing to do is use a pillow protector as the new cover. Just zip it over and never remove it. Or sew a new cover right over the old one. You add another protector over that as the washable one. For a real fix I sew up a cover the size I want in down proof cotton fabric. I take the pillow I want to recover cut open the end and holding the end closed put it in upside down so the open end is in the closed end of the new sack. Then use art clips to keep most of the new sack closed and start to pull out the cover of the old pillow. I shake and push and pound out the old feather and down go into the new sack. I slowly pull out the old one as it empties. However, as you can imagine this can be messy. That is why I do it outside. You probably won't be able to get 100% into the new bag but should get almost all of it. I do know that some people who make down items use special vacuums to remove and blow in the down. If you can have a second person help you hold things it is easier. I have considered wetting the pillow and then just scooping it out in a big wet mass and putting it in a new case, sewing it closed and popping it into the dryer. It sounds like I do this everyday. I have not had to do this in several years. I have done at least 6-8 bed pillows this way. Each pillow takes longer than you think and you must have a sense of humor for flying feathers. I do know that the Company Store will redo any down product you bought from them and add additional down if needed. I am not sure if they will do it for other companies products. There are also specialty companies that will do this work. Good luck if you decide to take this on.

Ten years after we had this place built, we had the kitchen gutted and completely redone. The layout with it's too long kitchen island, clutter-magnet, space-hogging kitchen desk, and too deep pantry cabinet were very much not working for me. Around the same time, our son's bedroom finally morphed into our guest room, once he bought a home of his own. That was a fun decorating project for me!!! Five years ago, we had most of the windows replaced, with more energy efficient ones. And, we had a cedar storage closet built in our attached garage for out of season clothes. A great move! Three years ago our in-floor radiant heat system totally died on us. It had been set into concrete with the entire floor throughout then bricked over it as it was built. So, we had the choice of tearing up all the bricks throughout our entire one story home, jackhammering the entire concrete subfloor, and putting in a new in-floor heating system, and then bricking over it all once again (and this was in November when it was quite cold here in our Northern New Mexico mountains!), OR installing a new heating and air conditioning system up on the roof, with all heating and a/c venting being cut through our beautiful wood and beamed ceilings, as all our walls throughout are thick, real adobe brick. We chose the latter, but Ugh, what an expense and disruption that was! But, up until last week, other than refreshing the walls with the same cream-colored paint now and then, we really haven't done anything else, except adding more paintings here and there. Oh, and having 4 more adult trees and 2 large evergreen bushes planted by our favorite nursery just the other day (LOL). And then, last week, our 27 y/o daughter, came home here for an extended Thanksgiving visit (because, as a therapist, she can counsel in her dad's private study via the internet on a kind of private facetime). Anyhoo, she and her dad decided to turn her old bedroom into a serious workout room for him/us. Soooo, our home is now upended and a mess as they work on this project whenever she's not counseling. I'm a good decorator and my husband and I still like and enjoy how I've decorated our home. It doesn't look of feel dated, and we're satisfied with it just looking welcoming and comfortable. I'll be very glad when the new workout room is finished, though! No other updating plans are in the works!

Hi John good to see you pop in! Find the same. Some burn fast some don't. Hard to say. Keep the receipt. They are usually warenteed for 10,000 hours. You can calculate that by your run time to get an idea

WC have one, Did readings daily for the past year +. What do you need?.

Yep, that was my question too - not whether CFLs die, but rather, do they get weaker in the same way that big long fluorescents get weaker? My bulbs are still working, a good year-plus that I've had them, but I need to order a few more for additional lights and am wondering if I should replace the ones I have.

And yeah, I've been taking a break from the orchid forums. I was finding that I was getting a bit tired of my plants, they were becoming a chore, so I got rid of like 25% of them and now, while still a lot, I have around 70, it's a hell of a lot better than 100+ I had before. And, I've moved everything over to semi-hydro, so what lives lives and what dies dies, and that's made my life easier, and the it's made it easier for me to ask friends to water. I'd still like fewer, but other than a very nice villosum that I got from Marriott, just bloomed, and I realize I don't like Paph villosums - lol - I'm pretty happy with what I have left. So far.

Several of us are downsizing. It's funny - the ideal number of plants seems to be around 65. Last month, I went from 108 to 90, heading for 65. Mine are a pain to water.

What happened to that 25% - or do you want to say? :) (Kevin got ribbed royally recently by Howard for tossing some of his in the trash.)

If you're at the point of replacing T8s or another type tube, or going CFL, the current thread, "Hey, Clara - What lights did you get?" has a couple of posts that may provide a quick tutorial.

Summary - CFL good; tubes bad re: amount of light for plants, amount of energy consumed, and amount of utility bill. Additionally, the CFLs provide heat which can cut/eliminate the need for a space heater, if you have enough of them in an enclosed space. (Hope I'm doing justice to the thread.)

Last year, I got 2 42W CFLs, along w/ "brooder clamp lights" from HD. They're those round, shiny metal, ugly clamp-on things, but the 10.5" fixtures are the perfect size for the 42W CFLs. A side note - from hours on the Web and phone, I've concluded that's the largest brooder light made. An inexpensive fixture for 85W doesn't seem to exist, unless you want to find parts here and there.

Anyway, last winter, I had one 42W bulb over Phals, Phrags, and Paphs. They were about 6' away from the window. Everything rebloomed. Caveat - they were all outside the summer before.

So - before you buy more tubes, CFLs are sure worth checking out. 1000Bulbs.com seems to have the best prices.

Thanks Whitecatt, but I think I'm not explaining myself well :-) I HAVE some CFLs already, for over a year now, 42w bulbs, and I want to know WHEN I need to replace them. I.e., does the quality of the light, the amount of kelvins, or anything else diminish over time with CFLs, and thus do you need to replace them every 6 months, every year, every few years, or only when they burn out?

They definitely get 'weaker' as time goes by.

I just replaced a 23 watt guy and ended up with a bit of scorch on leaves from the brighter light. I'll be replacing all of my higher wattage ones in the next week (it's been a year), because they're noticeably putting out less light.

I just rotate them into the household lights since the household lights regularly blow.
