Doug fir floor
Comments (7)Throwing money away? thats in the eye of the beholder. theres something to be said about puting in the doug fir to restore the house's orginal condition, meaning materials. You're right that fir is soft, and with that will show damage, but only you will be able to gauge if you produce enough potential traffic on the floor where the damage would over shadow the beauty of the floor. that being said, i know if my parts, fir is easy to come by, and relatively cheap, but you might consider a white oak or maple floor. depending on the age of the house, both those species would fit into the category of "period correct". unless this was a shack in the woods, or a farm house, both oaks, and maples were commonly used in early 20th century homes....See MoreLooking For Pictures of Red Fir Floors
Comments (2)Lori Reeb , your flooring guy should be able to sand the floors in a small area and show you several different stain colors on the floor. That will go a long way in helping you choose. Online pictures can be tricky for a number of reasons....See MoreAre my old fir floors beyond repair?
Comments (10)Fir flooring is gorgeous when refinished. Be sure to find someone experienced with soft woods to sand your floor as it sands differently than oak or maple. When I removed that old black mastic, I had an emulsifying cleaner diluted with very hot water which softened the glue enough to scrape off with a putty knife. Unfortunately, I bought the cleaner from a closeout deal and couldn't ever find it again as it worked very well. Be careful not to get the glue too soft as it will absorb into the flooring and is very difficult to remove. Start in a corner and work into the more noticeable areas. I would reserve judgement on filling gouges until you have the floor sanding started. You may find that filling them just highlights the issues. I was surprised to find that the overall beauty of the floor more than made up for the downsides of seeing issues....See MoreMore paint on already painted Fir Floors
Comments (16)How much was the quote from the 'expensive' company? How many square feet would that include? One of my favourite people to work with (when selling cork flooring to the Island) was Dominique Daviau. She's mainly in the Parksville area but has travelled to Victoria if the work was there. http://handymum.com/ Yep. Handymum! That's her handle. She's awesome with older homes. She would be the one to install the cork floors for some of my customers. She ALWAYS called to ensure she was following EVERY requirement we had. At this point, she has to be one of the most experienced installers of cork flooring (a weird niche that she probably doesn't even know she holds ;-). And because of the work she and I did together (over the phone) she learned to work with Loba products (and really enjoyed the experience). If I had work on the Island that needed doing, I would absolutely call her. I was very impressed with her drive to do things 'properly'. She loves thinking outside the box while maintaining the integrity of the work and the house. It's something she enjoys...which means older homes are really something she does well. You are welcome to drop my name, Stephanie. I used to work for Cancork Floor in Richmond BC. Hopefully she remembers...but it's OK if she doesn't. It won't make any difference with the quality of work she offers. I hope this helps....See Morelisa98112
