Found on my doorstep today. A large box that contained Scrabble - The Cooking Edition along with some California Olive Oils and Peach Balsamic vinegar.

What a treat!

Thanks nightowl! The dishes are Mikasa "High Spirit". They are from their Maxima series; super strong, and oven microwave, DW safe. The design is an old one (had been around for years before we even got our set--I had wanted them for a long time!). It is discontinued unfortunately. :( The borscht recipe is my modified version of my late MIL's recipe (hers had meat, beef chuck cubes I think). Mine doesn't use any meat. I only made it once before without meat, the recipe below is yesterday's ingredient amounts, and what I did. Borscht 12 Qt pot 11 large beets; parboiled (to soften skin a little; makes beets easier to peel) and peeled, set aside Then, shred in food processor; (I did ~1/2 the beets w/ 3x3 julienne disk, and ~1/2 w/ medium shredding disk-- mostly because I couldn't remember which I used the other times I've made borscht! You can use either disk, or grate by hand. After processing the beets, I chopped them a little in a large bowl w/ this curved hand-held chopper blade that my parents got for me in Alaska, just to make the beet strands a little shorter--some were kind of long from the large size beets) ********************************************************* 16 cups water 1 onion cut in half (I leave the skin on) 2 small bunches carrots cut up (carrots had stems, I cut them off, also, they weren't very large or thick carrots) 4-6 celery stalks, and some leaves cut up Allspice berries Salt & Pepper 1 lemon (juice) Boil 1 1/2 hours (?), strain out veg Dill Allspice berries Lemons Vinegar Sugar S&P Add beets to the broth in the pot, along with 1 bunch of dill (either in cheesecloth/bouquet garni or finely chopped?), add more water to pot (to about 1" from rim), more allspice berries, more S&P, juice of 4 more lemons, add sugar to taste, and some vinegar. Boil at least one, or more hours, adj seasonings to taste. Serve hot or cold, with sour cream or smashed potato (mash w/ a little butter, no milk) or plain boiled potato.

Sorry, Carol! And thanks for pointing it out. I've edited it. I did use them--three mini-pie dishes--for the leftovers. The main difference is they were a bit more on the sweets side because they're shallow. Fewer, deeper ramekins or proper custard cups might have been better for the custard, though as is they were also really good! BTW, the crust is whole wheat (red) with spices.

"There used to be highly professional checkers who knew each piece of produce by code name. One, who was a family favorite a couple of decades ago, was a checker while getting an advanced nursing degree. And after, because she couldn't deal with the pay cut she'd have to take to work as a nurse." I used to be one of those, during pre-scanner, pre-sticker years, working part time at a journeyman level during my university years. I worked at a large and busy chain (Ralphs, if you are in SoCal). They'd give us speed tests quarterly and I was usually first or second for speed and accuracy in the store, scoring higher than most of the full timers. I will tell you, as familiar as I was with produce (I'd walk through the displays each day on my way in, before punching in), I made mistakes. Usually when there were different sizes of the same thing at different prices. When trying to recognize something with a brief glance, it's easy to make a mistake. I would have loved to have had scanners and stickers. Unlike your nursing student example, I willingly chose to take a pay cut, trading a journeyman's hourly wage at a mind-numbingly boring job that went no higher (union job) for an entry-level professional position. The professional position led to a great career with almost unlimited upward mobility. Manual labor is manual labor. Usually the less thinking such jobs require, progressively lower levels of thinking anyone doing it will apply.

Appetizer I like to make and take — Shrimp scampi stuffed mushrooms. I just began making these, sans recipe. Essentially, I buy a lots of large white/button mushrooms. Clean with a soft brush and trum off any hard areas. Remove the stem and caredully remove the gills and center. Save this in a bowl. I pan fry shrimp with garlic In Shell tto maximize flavor, careful to just barely cook. Remove the shrimp from the shell and devein. SAVE shell Chop or cut shrimp into 1/4 to 1/2 inch pieces. Set aside. Refry the shrimps shells in more butter, olive oil. You want to brown the shells to maximize flavor. Add some minced garlic 2 to 3 T. Then deglaze pan with a bit (1 to 2 T of pale dry sherry and a bit of chicken broth or water. Make abou 1/2 C of rich shrimp broth. Strain and remove shells. Then in a bowl combine coarsely chopped shrimp, a bit of roasted garlic or garlic powder, bit of ground black pepper., and bread crumbs. Moisten with the shrimp-garlic flavored broth and gently combine. Fill the hollowed out mushrooms caps, being careful not to densely pack. Place the stuffed caps in a buttered pan with a bit of EVOO. You can sprinkle some fresshly grated Parmesan cheese over the top of each stuffed mushroom. Add a bit of water to the bottom of the pan. Cover with aluminum foil and set in a preheated 300 deg F oven, middle rack and bake for about 20 minutes. Check for donenness. Remove foil and bake for another 5 or so minutes. These are good served warm or room temperature. Another Thanksgiving side that I like are baked stuffed artichokes (Italian style). Desserts: Some of those I bake/take include: * Mother Wonderful’s (Myra Chenin’s) Pumpkin Cheesecake. It is the most delicious cheesecake. The recipe was in a local paper years ago and it is in one of her books and perhaps online. Not your ho hum cheesecake. * Deep dish baby-butt smooth baked custard pie. Cooked perfectly. * Flourless chocolate Cake * A cranberry or colorful fruit lattice-topped pie. The juice from the dark berries colors the golden lattice top here and there, making it a visual knockout. Homemade pie crust only.

While I was in and out, up and down getting things done. I took a quick look at this thread on my Blackberry, I thought it was a pretty interesting gift package, Scrapple, olive oil and Balsamic vinegar. I thought, that could be a very interesting taste combination.

Now I just realized that it is Scrabble, and not scrapple. LOL.

Nice gift. I think I know what that was for.

Last year Teresa was sending out wild rice like crazy to many people, and it was around her birthday.

Jude - our weather is perfect this weekend. Absolutely perfect for the Twin Cities Marathon and activities.

My surprise package came from my friend of 50 years. I wrote in to Catholic Youth magazine when I was in the 2nd grade. My mother convinced me that I just had to have a pen pal. I was matched up with a girl named Jodi who lived on Newport Beach, CA. And I mean - right on the beach near the Newport Pier. My dad worked for Northwest Airlines and every summer I flew out to visit my cousins in Tustin and Jodi at the beach.

Yesterday I called Jodi to thank her. She and her husband were fishing and caught a 200+ lb tuna. Gees I could go for some grilled tuna right this second! I'll have to settle for a grilled pork chop at the Farmer's Market.

The Scrabble game brought back memories of days on the beach. We would put out a blanket and the Scrabble game. We pretended to play Scrabble but we were really checking out the guys skateboarding past us.

Happy Birthday, Teresa! What a neat story about your friendship.

I'm trying to imagine how there could be a cooking edition of Scrabble. Letters are letters, aren't they? Do you have to spell names of foods and such? Of course, I could look it up on the internet. Silly me.

Sometime ago, a friend went out and caught a tuna. I don't remember the size. A bidding war immediately started over shortwave radio. In a couple of hours, it was sold to a Japanese boat for $50,000.

Teresa, Happy Birthday! Fun story about your friend. In my younger days, I spent a lot of time on the sand & in the surf of Newport Beach. I lived in Laguna. Very different place than here on the CT shore. :)

We play Scrabble several times/week but I'd never heard of The Cooking Edition so I had to Google. Looks like fun!

Regarding tuna, a friend of ours has a fully rigged fishing boat. We have a Nordic Tug. Several years ago, we made a pact with our friends...once a year DH & Dave take off for a week's tuna fishing off Montauk and Dave foots the bill for the gas. Then, in return, we take them on a cruise often to either St. Johns or the Keys & the gas is on us. It's been a fun arrangement & we've become good cruising partners. But, back during the boom years there were always Japanese boats waiting to purchase any tuna they caught. Offered good money. For the past 5 seasons...no Japanese boats in sight. Partly due to new (than goodness!) regulations & better enforcement of our sovereign waters & partly because prices are down (or, so I understand). Dave & DH split their catch, have some canned locally to keep & give as gifts & the rest goes in our freezers. We eat a lot of tuna...very expensive tuna! LOL It is soooo NOT cheaper to catch your own. This year, we lost August's catch to Irene. :) Usually, somebody will donate their catch to our annual pig roast feast at the marina. The tuna's cooked in a pit surrounded with seaweed, a 10-lb. bag of onions, many heads of garlic, & herbs similar to how we roast the pig. Very good!

Tricia - cooking a tuna that way sounds delish. I had to settle for a pork chop amidst dreams of freshly caught tuna.

My friend Jennifer from the Farmer's Market gave me the funniest bumper sticker for my birthday. It says:

Teresa, Christy thinks a nice pork chop is the perfect meat for a birthday. Happy Birthday. The forum is richer for your presence. I'd love a Cooking Edition of Scrabble. LOL. One of my friends just got me started playing scrabble on facebook. Hadn't played in ages. That bumper sticker is funny... and a little scary... heh.

I'm trying not to think of that lovely big tuna, or I'll be stopping in the kitchen for a 3am snack!

I think Lou is trying to fatten me up! :-) The box contained Anise Biscotti along with both Anise and Almond Pizzelles.

Lou - your heavenly smelling gift even beat out the TV I won earlier this week. I went to a wine tasting at a nearby wine shop the day before my birthday last weekend. They had been having a month long wine sale. Their distributors had donated many prizes. I signed up for the drawing. They called on Monday and said I had won the 28" Samsung flat-screen TV.

I just want to stand next to my counter and smell the bags of goodies!

I took the TV to my niece's new house today. She is in the midst of a divorce and the soon to be XH would not let her take one of their 3 TV's. My intent when I won the TV was to return the Samsung I bought a few weeks ago because it's still in the box. But I decided to keep the one I bought and give the Samsung I won to Kris so she would have one less thing to fight about in a rather ugly divorce. She has two boys - ages 6 and 4. And I think we all know kids that age cannot be without a TV and their DVDs.

The cookies and biscotti are all mine. I need to add a few pounds - thanks for the help Lou!
