5th Burner and Griddle

Does anyone have a range with the fifth burner? I've been looking at two models, one of which has the circular burner and the other an elliptical burner. I've got a cast iron griddle that I want to use and was wondering if the circular burner would be just as good as the elliptical one. The fellow I talked to at Lowes really wasn't very helpful at all.

Does anyone here have a range with a fifth burner and does the shape make a difference? I've been told that since my griddle is cast iron either one will work.

I have the GE Cafe range with an elliptical center burner. I use it often and love it. I've been using it with the griddle that came with it. I think that I would rather have the elliptical with a griddle for even heating, but w/cast iron you could get away with either.

We have a regular round burner as the 5th burner. But we also have a cast iron griddle that came with the range. It is rectangular and designed to go over two burners from front to back for even heat distribution.

All but the cheapest ranges in the stores seem to come with the latest fad - the continuous grate and the 5th burner with a griddle. My top pic now is the LG LRG3093ST. I'm thinking this 5th burner on a 30 inch stove is just overkill and something to get dirty. What do you think about your 5th burner? As I am remodeling and giving up my old Montgomery Ward Tappan Bisque Range - which has just simple knobs - no electronics and 4 burners but never lets me down.

I have a couple griddle overlays on six burners and am very happy with that. I do from time use all my burners. I would look at the properties of the metals and see what would fit the way you cook. I like that with the add on you could change the griddle if you wanted to use the different metals with different properties. Some differences in the built in and add on-- The built in may be thicker than the add on but you would have to ask as they may very brand to brand. The built in is often made of steel. Because steel has poor heat transfer qualities, this will take longer to heat and not be as nimble if you want to change the temperature of the cooking surface. It will be more subject to hot spots. If it is thicker, it will take even longer and be take longer to change temp. It will hold much more heat for searing and retain heat longer though. Most have a surface that will season over time and become non stick like a cast iron skillet. I think Thermador has some other finish on theirs. Some of the overlay griddles are a little bigger as wide as 15 inches. There are also some ranges that come with an add on griddle specific to that range that fits and seats a little better than the regular add ons. With add ons, you would have your choice of metals, usually between steel, cast iron, porcelain covered cast iron, nonstick aluminum and uncoated aluminum. Steel and cast iron are poor conductors of heat so would behave as described above. Some people like that there tends to be areas that are different temperatures because they can use it to their advantage. These will both take a seasoning fairly easily. For being add ons, they are very heavy to move around. The porcelain covered cast iron will not really take a seasoning very well. Aluminum griddles have excellent heat transfer so heat very evenly throughout and are quicker to respond to changes in heat. They do not hold as much heat though. Aluminum is also much lighter weight if you have to move it. Bare aluminum will take a seasoning but require a little more time to develop. Well, you all echo my thoughts. I just can't imagine having grease fly from the front burner area. And I am really too short (5'1") to do my cooking on the back burners, I think. I am going to try to look at the Blue Star this weekend while traveling to a wedding. (There's a dealer near our hotel!) I'll have to see what my gut says... I did a quick saute on the temporary electric stove last night, front right. Granted, there was only a micro hood in use (what a piece of caca) but the grease was flying and I was missing my DCS! (Not to mention my VAH...)

I thought I would reply to your post since noone else has. I actually have the range you are talking about on order. Hoping for it to arrive in a few weeks - as soon as the kitchen is up and ready for it. The reason I went with this range, is because I had the same one, only 4 years old, at our other house. We purchased it when we re-did the kitchen in our old house. It was one of the only ranges I could find that fit our budget and needs, all while looking good. I was VERY sad to say good-bye to that range, so it was an obvious choice to buy the same one again. Apparently the new model is even "nicer" as per the sales rep. I have zero complaints about my old frigidaire pro. I am an avid baker and cook, and that oven worked great every time! The range top was wonderful, too, and the 5th burner came in handy during many family gatherings. I would highly recommend it!

Clueless, I'm glad to see you like your GE Cafe range. I've been considering that one and today saw it in person again. As long as I can get dh on board with the price, that's the one I want! Is yours duel fuel? My friend has the all-gas, but I'd be getting the duel fuel w/propane.

Mine is the one designed to go over two burners like your vtlakehouse and that's why I was wondering if it would work with the round burner versus the elliptical. I was told the same thing you said Clueless that it would work using either style.

Hi, just wanted to forwarn you that there has been some bad reviews of the GE Cafe used with propane! Perhaps other GE owners with the propane can chime in but something to do with the btu's not being that efficent or something? I remember coming across a few complaints while I was researching before I bought my GE Cafe.
If you are considering buying the GE, perhaps you can call them and see what they say about it. Good luck!

jillsee, I remember seeing that as well, and it was concerning to me, but when I talked to the people at the appliance store a few weeks ago, they didn't seem to think it would be a problem. I was just at a different place today and forgot to ask their opinion so I'll definitely ask. Thanks for reminding me. The one my friend has is on natural gas but unfortunately, we don't have gas in my neighborhood!

We got GE Profile electric model. It has "bridge burner" that connects one small and one med round burners (two dials for 3 heating surfaces--one has both the front burner and the bridge burner. There is also another smaller burner and then a 3-size front burner, each with own dial. The seeming 5th burner (has its own dial) is actually a warming spot, not a real burner. Not sure if this is a 5th burner or just an odd thing--have had the range 5 months and still haven't made up my mind.

Did not come with a griddle. Has a smooth top, manual says not to use a rough-bottom griddle so I bought one with a very smooth bottom surface.

I like the bridge burner area--has a lot of flexibility. Same with the multi-size one.

When I started out, I wanted 5 burners, but for 2 people, haven't found a situation where this did not suffice. I don't think I would have needed more, even for our 4-person pr-empty nest household.
