You can do it!
I don't put water on to scrap the popcorn, it is so easy, but I would think it would be a real big mess to clean up with it being wet. IMO

I can't understand why people put carpet in bathrooms! Hope your not thinking of putting carpet back down. Nasty Nasty! ICK!

I love renovation and changes. I've never scraped a popcorn ceiling, but I've watched someone take it off and it did look very simple, just messy. Just buy those thin, cheap painters plastic throws.

I see them use the peel and stick tiles on HGTV all of the time. They are making them so much better than years ago. They look like tile or stone. It's an option to keep you from having to take up the old flooring. That is, if the old is down really good.

We removed popcorn ceilings in all 2200 sq. ft. of our house. Do not put water on it, just scrape it dry. The water makes a huge mess and gets the drywall wet which makes it really easy to gouge and scratch.

We took the popcorn off our ceilings in the living/dining room/kitchen/bathroom/entry! NOT fun...but it is worth it in the end. We didn't use water when we took ours off...just scraped it. We used a wide scraper. We were told to pull it, but we ended up pushing it to scrape it off...BUT, you do have to be careful so you don't dig in. GOOD LUCK!

Definately no carpet. Here is what I'm stuck with until I get the popcorn ceiling off and then the painting begins. Last will be the floor.

I agree with the stick-um tile. Lots of pretty designs and so easy to apply. Not real spendy either!

Good for you Gayle! I love home improvement projects. And I actually like the floor you uncoverd. Is that one piece or is it tiles? I once lived in an old house and when I ripped out the old carpet I found terrazzo floors! They were lovely once I got them back in shape. I won't be so lucky in this new (1976) house.

There are some great vinyls out there these days that are very reasonably priced.

I did the same thing with my bathroom floor Gayle. Instead of vinyl flooring though it was the 1" moss green tile underneath. I went with the "faux marble" stick tiles from home depot, and they look great. I have lots of compliments, and it has been down almost 11 years now. I can only imagine the neat designs they probably have now. I did a heavy white caulking all around the edges especially around the tub. It still really looks sharp. I'm glad I did it.

That is tiles.

This house has that same tile under all the carpet. For some reason this is the only room with that rosy beige tile. The other rooms are a creme/beige speckle. My Mother use to wax the heck out of these floors and buff them. They shined so beautifully.

I've seen this tile in schools and hospitals. I don't know what is called but it sure as heck is durable. It has been there since 1963.

I'm more likely to use the Home Depot Tiles, but I haven't shopped to see what is out there. Sounds good.

I think I know what you are talking about Gayle. Be careful if you decide to remove those old tiles. A lot of those had asbestos. If they are in decent shape I would just leave them and put the new ones right on top.

Good luck with the ceilings....it is not a fun job. We did our whole house, vaulted ceiings and all. We had to use water, it was not coming off. Some previous owner had actually painted over it. GRRRRR!!! But I can now say that I never have to do it again!! LOL!

I second the idea of finding out whether there might be asbestos in the ceiling. Not worth the risk, imo.

I found this sight and now I'm scared. But, I'm still going for it.

Gayle, I did that in my last house. Took off popcorn ceiling in the kitchen, dining room, and my computer room. I never regretted it, but I was glad we moved before I tackled any other rooms. It was a lot of work.

I found it easier spraying it. I used one of those pump yard sprayers. Sprayed about a 5 foot square, let it be wet for a few minutes and then scraped the crud off. It came of very easy, almost fell by itself.

Messy on the floor, but I had a blue tarp down, and just let the stuff dry some, pushed it together and picked it up with a dust pan. Later I sprayed the tarp outside, with the hose, and got it all cleaned up. :)

No plastic for the dump. Green, like Glenda's thread. :)

If you live in an older house, you may want to get the popcorn tested prior to scraping. It could contain asbestos.
I found that wetting just a small section with a garden sprayer (like Moni used) worked well. Use warm water, don't soak it, let it sit a few minutes and it really keeps the dust down. Home Depot sells scrapers especially made for this project. You connect it to a pole (like you use for your outdoor broom or your paint roller) and you can hang a bag on it, to catch a lot of the popcorn.
Definitely tarp the floor. I used disposable plastic sheeting. Good luck!

At least the bedrooms don't have the popcorn ceiling. Just the bathrooms and living, kitchen areas.

My Dad was a Day Sleeper and Night Worker, I'm sure that is why they had the Popcorn Ceiling.

I once tore the wall to wall carpet out of my living room, using only a steak knife and a screwdriver. It was definitely the hardest thing I've ever done, including giving birth twice!

LOL! Ahh...tools of the trade.

I used a big flat head screw driver and a hammer to pry up the boards.
