pictures of not new marble and soapstone?

I love looking at the finished kitchens blog, but I'm wondering if you could post some pictures of your year or two or three year old marble countertops and soapstone countertops? I'm considering both and would love to see some pictures of what they look like after a lot of use.

Could you also tell me what you like/don't like about your choice of countertops?

Here is one taken a couple weeks ago. Soapstone is 5 yrs old and gets a LOT of use :) If you look in the food album on my photobucket you will find a ton of pics of the soapstone. Most are breads covering the soapstone so you have to look around the loaves ! c

I've had mine for 2 years in April. I can't believe it's been that long.

It's Medium Minus from Dorado Soapstone. You can see there are some little dings since it's not one of the really hard varieties. I don't oil mine at all anymore, I like it in the natural state.

Thanks Yesdear....I love the Brazilian Black, it had just been oiled when I took the pictures. It is really a dark gray and I prefer it unoiled, but I'm not totally sure one way or the other (I like that it looks good both ways). It has hints of green and even a carmel area. I got it at Soapstone Werks. They told me that the stone is almost impossible to get anymore, so I guess we were lucky...I picked it out back in March. Funny thing about the seams...there are a lot, they are well done and don't show as much when it's just been oiled (today they show a bit more). There is one at the center of the sink, one before the angle in the corner by the cooktop, and the two rails of the cooktop are separate pieces also. With all the angle changes in the kitchen a variety with heavy white veining would have looked funny. Re: the baking area. It will have the coffee pot and toaster over there with MW underneath, so there won't be a ton of space. I might use this area as the "bulters pantry" when we have bigger groups over. The real drop zone is being constructed as a niche mudroom off the garage door (next to the laundry room where we most commonly enter the house). Also, there is a free standing hutch next to the Fridge which will have our glasses/dishes, silverware, dishes and kid snacks & probably a junk drawer. I lucked out on the sink, it's in it's original location and I loved it other than the DW used to sit within 3" of the sink edge, putting a bigger cabinet in between really helped that. I love the sink, just wish it had running water & a drain (maybe Monday). I may replace the air gap after inspection, it's just sitting there now...I didn't have good luck with my old soap dispenser (same location) it would get to hot and leak dish soap everywhere. I'm thinking the new windows may help that.

Hi- We have soapstone countertops, but no soapstone sink. I went with a silgranit sink (Blanco) because I knew I didn't want stainless, and at the time I was choosing sinks I didn't really consider getting a soapstone one (I'm not sure why). We've only had our countertops since the end of July, and have really only been using the kitchen completely for about 2 weeks. Sometimes I wish I had gotten a soapstone sink, because they are sooooo beautiful and I think the idea of having integral runnels on the side of the countertop is such a great idea. But-I think I'm glad I didn't go that route, mainly because I'm clumsy, I bang things around in the sink a lot, and I think I would be making lots of little nicks and chips. Our soapstone is sort of middle of the road with respect to hardness, as far as I can tell, but I think I would have driven myself (and DH) crazy if the sink were also soapstone. But that's just me. I do LOVE the countertops, though. HTH

I keep huge cutting boards on our white marble island.
I can post a picture later, but our marble counters are a wee bit --like barely visible yellowy under the butting boards where water has collected under the boards..oops.

Our counters are honed and in the bright light only at certain angles you can see where they have been "etched" meaning you can see a change, not in color, but even more dull than even the honed surface. I took a marble sample and left wine, tomato sauce, and lemon juice on it for different periods of time. THe color never changed, just etched the surface.

I am looking at soapstone now for another house. It get the sense that since I will not oil them, there will be more variation in surface color...

Mominator--I think I speak for the OP as well when I ask you to please post pics! I'm considering Carrera (Calacatta is too expensive for me), but can't find pics of a well-used counter to know if I'll be upset by the honing. I'm going to get a sample and play with it soon.

I'm considering ss too. Thanks for the timely post Steph! :)
