Michael Smith Houses - Have You Seen It?

Just curious if anyone has the book or has had the opportunity to thumb through it? Just curious if there were good pics of his kitchen which I've been so in love w/ now for about 1 1/2yrs. since seeing it in Housebeautiful. I didn't realize until yesterday that it was hios own kitchen.

Yes, I have the book, and the first section is his house, including his kitchen. It's a great book...I also love his "Elements of Style." Both are deeply educational in all aspects of design, regardless of your budget, although it helps to start with the perfectly beautiful things he chooses for his clients.
When the money bag in the sky breaks open into my pocket, the first call I'll make is to Michael Smith!

DH had to go to a funeral, last Friday, and dropped me off at a mall, out of town. The only thing open, that early in the morning, was a Barnes & Nobles. I, of course, spent the time looking at all the new decor books.

I enjoyed reading the Michael Smith book but fell in love with Charles Faudree's new one and ordered it on Amazon, when we got home.

The bonus with the CF book was that it showed many examples of dark wood DR tables paired with white chairs. I still think that DH is a bit concerned that peeps will think we can't afford matching furniture. :) He is coming around, though.

The England/USA game was a bust. USA gave England an early goal by letting the English forward walk through the USA defense at the 4th minute. England returned the favour by giving the USA a goal because of sloppy goal keeping. Most games have ended in ties, and low scoring ties at that. The Brazilian/Korean game today has been probably the best game by far.

Unless something strange is going on with Shi-Un, it is not a climber. It just appears to be growing rather tall. It is on the south side of the tree so it is getting plenty of sun. The bottom part of the bush is in the picture, and the top of it sticking out at the lower level is taller than I am. Boulie's Dream only has a light fragrance to my nose. It does have a good supply of flowers when it blooms in flushes. It also wants to get quite tall.

I made at least a dozen scarves as Christmas gifts this past season, and had loads and loads of compliments on them. I used Red Heart pomp-a-doodle yarn, purchased at Michaels. I knit two stitches between each pompom. Very fast, very cute. I also made stuffed "aliens" for my kids and my nieces, which were a big hit. It looks as if Michaels may be discontinuing that yarn, and have replaced it with their own "Loops and Threads" pom-pom yarn. Their pompoms are much closer together; there is no way to get two stitches between the pompoms. someone here was wanting one of those 'unfitted' kitchens... an 'old world' look I think she was aiming for. I agree on the kitchens in mags vs those here. my sister often says I spend too much time on here (well being new I've been looking at all the old threads too!) and my thinking is I'm saving a ton of money by looking here and not buying mags - they don't give the input you get here either! I don't have a dh to bonce ideas off of, can't afford a KD and am very slow at making decisions - so starting months in advance to figure all this stuff out doesn't seem a waste of time to me! kitchens here are much more 'real' than those in the mags.

Have both of Smith's books -- just really wonderful books! Recommend them highly!

Parma -- yes -- CF's books are always always a treat!

Of course, I buy decor books at Amazon too! :)

Please take the following as it's intended: food for thought. I love going to Borders or B&N, selecting wonderful decor books and a comfy chair, maybe a cup of coffee or tea and ahhhhhh. So many on here say 'Amazon, of course'. Amazon is great, especially if you're in an area far from the brick and mortar book stores. I DO have them available and try to support these stores for fear they will not long be with us. Expo is now going....used to peruse decor books there, too.:>/ I shop online, but really prefer to be able to see, touch and smell products. Even if this were not the case, how nice is it that book stores now encourage browsing....almost like a library!
I am a Borders member and receive 30-40% coupons online to use in their stores. My Borders Express even will honor special orders and slightly out of date coupons if I run late. I recently received a questionnaire asking how often I shop online (Borders has an Amazon connection), and thought, " Uh oh, here it starts". Anyway just my just my thoughts on it.
p.s. (brag alert) I bought a chest of drawers 30 years ago at an antique shop in Va. Was about $300.00, I think. Lo and behold! Saw the same one in a M. Smith house that someone posted on here. I've always loved it, and feeling pretty proud of it now:>)!

Leahcate, I understand what you're saying and agree with it. I've purchased our new furniture from local stores, instead of online, because I know they're having tough times and I want them to stick around.

B&N, however, just isn't one of my favorite stores. For some reason, I prefer Border's and I would have paid the few extra $$$ for my book if I had been shopping there, instead. Border's has more good sales on books and it ticked me off that B&N wouldn't take my Starbuck's gift certificate even though that's what their kiosk sells.

Well, maybe I was just grumpy having had to get up at 5:30 that morning. :)

This is just my opinion, for what it's worth, but I much prefer his earlier book "Elements of Style" which I own. The book "Houses", which I looked at extensively at B&N seems to me to have inferior photography, does replicate pictures and rooms from the previous book and overall just doesn't seem as beautiful. Charles Faudree's rooms are very beautiful but I just don't find them intellectually stimulating. He has just one look, his art and accessories are on the sentimental side, nothing that would make you want to look again. Michael Smith is extremely well versed in antiques and art, understands many different styles and is very good at mixing them. He is continually educating himself and it's very much reflected in his decorating style. He is anything but a one note player.
