Sorry it has been a while since I have posted. Been with moving and settling in. Well, here are some pictures of our finished kitchen. Thanks to all of you guys that were so helpful to us during construction.

Wow, your kitchen is so beautiful. I love love LOVE your attention to details; I hope you don't mind, but I printed out a picture of your refrigerator panels to show my cabinet designer. So wonderful...hope you are still loving your kitchen! I also am glad to read your thoughts about the pull-out pantry shelves. In our kitchen layout, we had a long column of cabinetry leftover next to the built-in fridge, and I opted to do a tall pantry there with two pull-outs. Now I'm wondering if it would be better to leave those as simply cabinets?? Have the pull-outs grown on you over time? At any rate, I think your kitchen is outstanding. momqs, glad I saw your kitchen! I love it! It has so many things similar to how I'm designing my kitchen, that I feel like I'm looking at my (almost) finished design. Mine will be very similar, except it is about 3 feet less across the width, so no island for me and my cabinet stain will be a little different and no glass door fronts. I will also have a bank of south facing windows on one side and a full wall of cabinets on the opposite side. AND I am doing white marble tile backsplash and white countertops! Love the bubbles very cute! May I ask where did you get your backsplash tile? Although I don't have room for an island, I'm doing a peninsula on one end. I am curious about the seating part of your island. How much length left to right did you leave for your four stools? Also, how many inches is your overhang? I really like your flooring and I saw you posted the info on that, except for the color. Which color did you go with? In your photo it almost looks like the tone I envisioned for my floor. Sorry for so many questions! Please just take it as a compliment! Thanks!

Wow, that was a *lot* of z-brick! We have that painted-white stuff as our kitchen backsplash, and it drives me crazy -- it's so hard to clean! I'm sure you're glad to be rid of it. Was it hard to remove? And...what happened to that door near the stove? Did you close up that wall and put a window in? What a great idea...gives you a ton of counterspace next to the stove. Great work! I love your orange canisters...for the longest time, I really wanted an orange teapot. Never got one...maybe some day!

Ok, I'll try to hit the questions I am seeing here. - Regarding door/drawer spacing for inset doors/drawers: I took the finished door/drawer opening on the cabinet and made sure to allow for an 1/8" gap when cutting doors and drawer fronts to fit in the opening. One of the learning curves for me building cabinets was understanding how even a 1/16" difference is visible. This was a difficult concept to grasp for someone who is used to doing rough framing (building decks and framing walls) where being 1/4" off is no big thing. Also, it was very important to make sure everything was perfectly square. Keeping things square and careful measurement meant everything fit when it was time for assembly. Minuscule adjustments were made with a hand planer. - Attaching drawer fronts was a little tedious. I wound up tipping the cabinet on it's back, and simply laid the drawer front in the opening (on the drawer box.) Once I got it positioned, it got clamped and screwed in with two temporary screws from inside the drawer. When it was time for final install after paint, I simply removed the temporary screws, drilled proper counter sunk holes, added some wood glue and the screwed them in from the inside. Drawer pulls were also installed from the inside which also provided more attaching points. I highly doubt these drawer fronts will ever come loose. - Installing doors and gapping them was pretty similar to the drawer fronts. One trick that I figured was using a finish nail like a shim; their diameter was about the exact gap I was looking for. I'd place them loose between the door and cabinet, position the door (which moved easily along the nails like rollers), clamped the door and screwed them to the hinges. I used an old school hinge to keep the traditional look but they were slightly adjustable for final install. - Regarding the lower cabinet doors being used as a drawer front and how I attached them: This was done just like the drawer fronts, except I simply used more screws to attach them from the inside. This, plus sufficient wood glue, held them in place just fine. Also, keep in mind, the drawer boxes themselves are hard maple....nice and secure for the screws to hold to. The drawer slides are also effortless so there really is no torque on the fronts when pulling them open. I was concerned about this, but even fully loaded, they open effortlessly and my concerns are assuaged. I'm confident they won't come apart. And thanks again for all of the kind words, comments and questions.

WOW! What a gorgeous space. Love the floating shelves, and how (for me) they were echoed by the triple windows flanking the range. Love the beamed ceiling and the rich, rich finish on the cabinets. Great lighting fixtures, too, and details in the granite edge shaping. Lots of planning and attention to detail and boy does it show. Enjoy!!

Love the dark/walnut colored stained. Everything is very very tasteful! I like the floating shelves for your Guruji's picture. We are Hare Krishnas so I know how difficult it can be to incorporate this aspect into a well designed kitchen!

Was so excited to see that you'd posted! I was thinking of you the other day when someone was asking about having 2 islands. How's the layout working for you? I hope it's as wonderful as I'd imagined from your plans.

Great job! Love that there is symmetry, but still a lot of *interest* (love the shelves, glass in cabs, etc.) That's sometimes difficult to accomplish, but you did it beautifully! Congrats and enjoy your kitchen!!

Thanks to everyone for their very nice remarks. For me, the most important thing was the layout. As some may remember, I was having a hard time trying to decide between two islands vs. a massive single island. Boy, am I gad we went this way. The flow is so much better. We LOVE having the second island. It is where we eat most meals. The kids love using to do homework. The kitchen is truly the heart of the home, so the second island serves many functions for us.

The cabinets are cleat alder wood. We were trying to decide between knotty vs clear alder and since we wanted a more contemporary look, we chose clear alder. The stain is SW espresso. The design on the fridge panels were custom.

The counter tops are "Colonial Dream" granite from Arizona Tile. They are 3 cm thick with double laminated edges giving us the thick look we wanted.

The chandelier above the dining table is from West Elm

Your kitchen is absolutely gorgeous! I don't think I could function in there, though, because I would be constantly gazing around at the beautiful cabinets, lighting, and granite. It's like a cathedral! Enjoy!

LOVE the counters, and I am not usually a granite person- beautiful. I especially like your use of the space, both in the layout and in the way you used the height in the space. You have an excellent sense of balance and proportion. Very well thought out. Enjoy!

The cabinets are so beautiful. It looks like gorgeous furniture-a fitted kitchen---but it just all fits. Huge, comfy, elegant....everything is lovely. It all works together very well. Great job. Enjoy. It sure is company ready!

Beautiful! I must say that I have an enhanced appreciation for your double islands after hearing you talk about how you use the second one as both a dining/homework space. That tells us that more than just a kitchen of beauty, the real deal is that this gorgeous space is also the true heart/hearth of the home. Good for you! Enjoy!

The floating shelves are custom and were made during construction by our trim carpenter.

It's funny, when you see the kitchen every day, you sometimes forget how beautiful it is. For us, it is truly the center of home and is usually not as clean as the pictures :)

Absolutely beautiful. Your home is stunning and this kitchen compliments it so well. I love the tall ceilings and those balconies are to die for. The cabinetry is gorgeous and I love the concept of the double island. I also find it interesting that you really don't have many traditional upper/lower cabinets. Mostly pantries and those fridges are also great...
