Wish List for a redesigned FKB

I'm planning to move the FKB from blogger onto a different server. Without the constraints of blogger I would be able to offer many new features.

One would certainly be an enhanced search function. Another would be better categorization of the kitchens. I would also be able to integrate the slideshows and the FAQ into the FKB.

So what would you like to see in the new FKB?

Would you like to be able to rate kitchens?
Would you like the ability to upload your photos into the FKB (instead of hosting them separately on photobucket, picasaweb, flickr etc)? And to add your own commentary?
Would you like to see simple categories or mixed categories? (Simple categories would clicking on "Kitchen Style:Unfitted" to see all the unfitted kitchens, or clicking on "Countertop:Soapstone" to see all kitchens with soapstone counters. Mixed categories would be selecting both "Kitchen Style:Unfitted" and "Countertop:Soapstone" to see all kitchens with both.)

Any other ideas?

MHO while I wait for the plumbers ...

Having photos directly on FKB prevents loosing them after a while (websites close, people delete old photos from their albums, etc.) Specifying a limit for picture size would be almost necessary, pictures can be huge nowdays depending on the format, compression, etc. - I don't know how limited would the new server be but there always is a limit.

Mixed categories would be wonderful as long as starting point is not defined, i.e. I could also start with soapstone countertop and add kitchen style later. I would love! that feature.

Categorizing backsplash would be useful too (tile, glass, stone, etc. as well as dark, light, neutral, colorful, whatever) I also wondered about lighting used - chandelier, pendant, recessed, semi-flush, just the basic types.

Rating finished kitchens is tricky, it can be nice on one side but depressing if you're getting low marks ... everyone is proud of their kitchen even if others have a different taste. What about showing how many times has it been viewed instead? It would give some indication of how popular certain kitchens are without giving a grade on completing the kitchen remodel course :)

Adding comment is one of those nice features but not necessarily needed, at least not for me. I probably wouldn't check the site after a while and if anyone asks me a question, it would go unanswered unless I get an email reminder - which would probably require some registration on your site also. Are you ready to tackle it?

OK, that's all I can think about now -- other than thanks for the great job you are doing with collecting all info and keeping the site alive for us!!

mixed categories - or at least multiple filters - would be GREAT. One of the challenges for me was that I needed to see "low budget", but then I wanted to see different STYLES (woods, whatever) within that category.

Also, if posters choose to register, could an email forwarded be built into it? As petra says, the nature of kitchen rehab means people drift off after a while, and I sometimes notice unanswered questions on the FKB currently.

Just suggestions!

And, more importantly, thanks for doing a WONDERFUL job of giving folks a place to store this info for future remodelers!

Hi...It's been awhile since I visited the kitchen site, so it's cool to get this message from you! Delicatus white granite hasn't been difficult to maintain at all. We sealed it almost 4 years ago and haven't had to do it again up to this point. Water still sits on top of it (which I believe is the test one does to see if it needs sealing). I have never had any stain and tested a piece of granite before installing with mustard, ketchup . I don't believe it to be delicate and I don't baby it at all. I did have a chip in it around the sink. I must have hit the edge with something. It was an easy fix with some colored epoxy and it blends right in. I don't set hot things on it without using a trivet because it is cold and I worry about it expanding or cracking. I don't find it to be streaky or smudgy. In fact, I can't usually see when it needs to be wiped because messes disappear into the pattern of the granite, if that makes sense. I have to bend over it and look at it from an angle to see crumbs etc.. I clean it with hot soapy water on a dishrag..nothing special....just wipe it down when I make a mess....and then every now and then I use Method Granite spray cleaner which smells wonderful... The only negative I would say about this granite is that it has a lot of stuff going on in it. By this I mean when the light shines on it, you can see the different make-up of the granite. Some parts are shiny and some parts are more flat...Some people may want a more uniform counter. But, it is truly beautiful and it is an amazing piece of nature. Good luck with your new kitchen! I would love to see a picture when it's done if you wouldn't mind sharing! KA:)

I like the budget idea, as well as location. I'd definitely separate a "facelift' from a remodel. So, for under $10,000 facelifts and remodels really should be separate, because in THEORY one can do a full remodel for that. I also think a DIY section would be really helpful - for people who did at least 75% of the work themselves (as I am planning to do). Perhaps countertop install, electric and plumbing can be common exceptions. As far as breakdowns, this actually seems to be a common problem - I've seen a few people tell me that they really cannot say the cost of the kitchen because one contractor did the entire house remodel, including kitchen, for one fixed cost. Location: VERY useful! For example I live on Long Island, NY - here and in NYC a "budget" remodel apparently costs $40,000! "Average" is $75,000 plus (and MANY of those look like crap). I'm planning DIY, and PRAYING I don't go over $10,000. This, unfortunately, will exclude plumbing and electric (new space - must be hired out), and my vintage Chambers Stove. I'm also not including the new flooring because the new floors were installed by us and the $3,000 in wood covers both the kitchen/ family room and master bedroom. Also, we need new windows in the kitchen, and there is no way those will fit into the $10,000 limit. Basically, my KITCHEN budget will cover cabinets, counters and appliances. I am planning to take my cabinet specs to a few local cabinet places to get actual quotes (even HD is WAY over $20,000), then I am 99% likely to go out of state for whatever I don't build myself. NY is just WAY more expensive for EVERYTHING compared to other parts of the country. I'm doing this just to prove to my mother (who guessed that CUSTOM solid wood cabs would cost $5,000) that I AM doing this whole kitchen for CHEAP! I think good categories are: Under $10,000 Facelift Under $10,000 Remodel $10,000 - $20,000 $20,000 - $30,000 $30,000 - $50,000 $50,000 - $100,000 Over $100,000 I think most people will fall into the $20,000-$30,000 and $30,000-$50,000 categories, but having them separate is very important for people on a real budget, because lots of people just CANNOT afford more than $30,000 even if $40,000 is a common budget. I'm sure I'll end up in the $10,000-$20,000 category, and if I include the cost of my stove I'll end up in the $20,000-$30,000 range. Now I am very upset :_( Reality Bites!

Arlosmom - I hope it is not tacky to ask, but do you remember how much your liner tile cost? I have been thinking about it ever since I saw your pics. I also wonder how a black version would look. I hope it would be gray at the lighter parts and concentrated black in the crevices. I will be meeting with a tile person at a fancy schmancy tile store next week because they are the only ones who carry Mission Tile West near here, and they may carry Pratt & Larsen as well. Luckily, we had decided to splurge on the custom 2" figure 8 liner from them as our big extravagance and then later that day found out our builder is the neighbor of the manager and has done work for her. He called her and she told him he'd get a discount on the tiles, which he is passing on to me. This is a crude attempt to mock up our backsplash. The plan is to put a 1/2" plain black liner on each side of our custom ones (as seen in the mockup), but after seeing your tile, I wonder if yours as the 1/2" ones would be much better. The egg and dart may soften up our geometric edges a little. Or, we could do the style that has the top 2" cap with the egg and dart built in, therefore combining the 2 inch top planned with your liner. That would mean only doing 1 pricier upscale "line" instead of 2 (2 x a lower price may still be a higher total). In any case, the pattern is really cool and I am hoping to work it into my design somehow.

Green granites I don't see listed on FKB

Thank you, everyone!! Went back to the granite yard today and happened to ask about this one granite that blew us away (the only one that did but was marked "sold" the other day). It was called "Water Green". (This might also be "Waterfall Green" but it doesn't look like pics on the internet of Waterfall Green). Anyway, as I was walking by I happened to ask once more about the Water Green and it was suddenly available...and REDUCED! The problem is the slabs are relatively small and it might be ONE INCH SHORT for our island (the bigger slab). We are going to meet the fabricator again tomorrow to see if he thinks we can make it work. It is a more "vein-y" type granite--almost like a marble rather than a granite. The most gorgeous, iridescent, bling-y granite we saw. Quiet, yet loud yet spectacular--just what I had in mind!! Anyway, we've picked a Verde Tunas as backup and while it's not my favorite, it probably "goes" the best with our multicolor slate floors--is relatively quiet and has that gray/green quality that won't compete in the room. I am hoping the Water Green wins out, but prepared that it might be the Verde Tunas. Any more Verde Tunas pictures or Water(fall) Green? I have seen all the granite and marble websites but the pics just don't convey as well as they do when they are on cabinets.

1) Agree on mixed categories/advanced search. Also have date limits (so you can see just the newer ones)

2) I wouldn't bother with ratings--what does it add? While I don't like some of the kitchens, that's mainly because of style/taste that's not mine.

3) Photos--definitely try to host at least some photos. If there are server limits, perhaps have a limit of 5-10 photos, and then a link for additional. It is too bad that links get broken. On the other hand, it's a lot of server space.

I would love to have a mixed category search.

I veto the ratings...I think that just leads to hurt feelings.

Some photos, yes. But you will have to have a limit b/c of space.

Link to FAQ would also be very helpful.

Now, if we could just get iVillage to post a link to the FKB & FAQs...

Someone mentioned searching under "low budget" I think (I didn't read back up before I typed this). Is there a category possiblity in that type of area? I sometimes want to see what X can buy...what is the true fantasy kitchen? It's fun on websites and in magazines when they show a kitchen as "sky's the limit...say over $200,000" "High budget...$100,000 to $199,999" Moderate Budget X to X etc. I find it amazingly interesting to see what a person can do with a kitchen for $5000 or $10,000 for instance and would love to see a category like that if possible. For instance the recent $9,000 kitchen that looked like a $50,000 remodel was pretty amazing and very inspiring to anyone looking to make a change.

Rating is fun but can be cruel. I'd leave that out but I do like the number of hits idea a lot.

Mixed categories definately would be nice. I know that on one site I've viewed a category is colors so if you want to see a black kitchen....there ya go :) I also would like to be able to search and see kitchens incorporating antique fittings into the mix like mine.

I like the uploading a few pics but with a link to view more if people wish.

And thank you for doing this. You keep us idiots inspired to do more and more and more...ummmm until we pull our hair out LOL

I agree about the ratings. That only leads to hurt feelings. I like the ability to comment though so if I have a question about someone's designs, I could ask them directly on the blog.

Pictures uploaded directly is also a plus as long as the server can handle it.

I like the ability to search many different ways.

I would also like to see the slideshows updated (maybe automatically) when someone adds a new kitchen. Currently, the newer kitchens are not part of the slideshow..right?

Being able to narrow down the categories of your search/filters/mixed categories would be so cool. Often I remember a kitchen that has 'this' and 'this', so it would help in finding specific ones.

I agree that ratings could cause more harm than benefit.

I like the idea of comments, because I could check that more easily than keeping up with questions people post on the forum if I get to the time when I'm not checking the forum 24/7.

I didn't think it was important to download the photos there, until it was pointed out that photos linked from/to other sites often eventually (and sadly) disappear.

Please, no ratings. Part of what makes the FKB so great is that all of the kitchens are distinctly unique and allow others to think outside the box. It should not be a popularity contest.

I would love to see an additional backsplash category (material and color - i.e. blue, dark, slate, etc).

Limit photos uploads to just a couple - what you have now works, even if the links don't :). You really don't want to become just another photo hosting site.

I agree with the multiple category search - very helpful.

I would also like to know sizes. I look at kitchen pictures and have no idea if a room is 14 x 16 or 21 x 24

also when I have searched for some kitchens I have struck out because although I know their user name I don't know what name they have listed their kitchen under. If they could be linked by gardenweb user name

Question- I don't often see budget info on the FKB- is it just that some people don't mention it? That is one thing I'm always interested in. What the reno actually cost. Good for newbies to know particularly re hidden costs, like behind the walls, electrical etc.

Definitely like pics on the FKB, I get so bummed when I go to look at a favorite kitchen or see a teaser pic and then find that they can no longer be viewed.
Kitchen size and floorplan would be cool too.

Is there any way to search a description? I was thinking that if each person did a forty word searchable description then finding something specific like "red hood" would be a lot easier.

Re budget: since some people are shy about posting actual numbers, what about breaking it down into bands, ie 10k and under, 11k-20k, 21k-45k over 50k etc etc Kind of like "age" on many internet forms lol

Rating: No. It'd tend to prejudice the views of people trying to figure out what they like. And potentially introduce negative and biasing issues, politics, and personalities into the site. No. Just kitchens.

Mixed categories: Sounds good. Wouldn't this also include simple category capability if only one search term were entered?

I agree re: No to ratings. We try to be a fairly positive community here and I like that about us!

I like the photo idea.

I haven't done a recent search in ages, beyond checking out newly added finished kitchens, so can't comment on categories.

All in all I think you have done, and continue to do, an awesome job and this GW'er/TKO'er is truly grateful! You rock big time!

I have to agree on "no", for the ratings. That might inhibit folks from posting. I think we all want to share moreso that have a talent show. Not the best idea.

I really like the direct post of pics. When I was looking for choices while doing my kitchen, some of the pics I had seen, I was no longer able to find. So, thank you for that idea.

With regard to "mixing", that sounds good too. A Comments section might be good, especially if someone ends up on FKB before really looking elsewhere, and could ask questions, etc. It might be a burden to have to try to answer everthing though. Maybe if there was a link to the kitchen-owner.

Just my thoughts.

BTW, I too have to chime in with a huge "thank-you". I just can't imagine not having this Forum!!

Just this past last week, I started on a new project at work which deals with indexing data to support faceted searching. I have been thinking this would be ideal to make the kitchen blog thing more useable. So I'm definitely in favor of the catagories idea.

I think its probably important to have the images uploaded rather than simply including links. Although one possibility would be to have the images uploaded to some common location on a free image sharing site and then link to there from the kitchen blog.

I also don't particularly love the rating idea.

Category for self designed or kitchen designer.

Budget by categories: Appliances, cabinets, flooring, lighting, countertops, etc.

First, thank you so much for doing this in the first place! I can't tell you how useful the FKB has been to me during every phase of my project. You're awesome for doing it!

Now, about your questions, I mostly agree with everyone else-- no to ratings, yes to mixed categories, etc.

The one thing you mentioned that I think is most important is the picture hosting. I know that there were many, many kitchens I wanted to see more of, but the photo links were no good. I know photo hosting can eat up bandwidth like crazy, but if there's any way to manage this, I think it would add so much. I'd be willing to make periodic donations to a FKB bandwidth fund, and I bet many others would be, too.

First of all, I LOVE the FKB! So thank you, thank you, thank you! It's so helpful to be able to see REAL kitchens for a change and to be able to get detailed information on them.

I definitely agree -- no to ratings.

Mixed categories/ ability to search by multiple criteria would really be a great help. Personally I'd prefer to be able to narrow down by one criteria at a time, with an indication of the number of kitchens included in the results at each step. A keyword search would be good too.

I think it would also be great if there could be a thumbnail picture beside each of the results -- maybe similar to ebay.

Re uploading photos, I agree that hosting a limited number of restricted-size images, with links to more pictures, would be a good compromise.

And this might be a little outside the realm of possibility, but I would love to also see an in-progress-kitchens blog ... an IPKB :) I find that I often see pictures of kitchens (or parts of kitchens) here on GW that aren't quite finished yet, but still already have features that I would like to be able to search for and look at. For example, someone may have already installed exactly the cabinets I'm considering, but not quite finished their kitchen yet. Maybe there could be an in-progress section of the blog, and then when the kitchen is finished, it just moves over to the finished section. It would also be fun to be able to follow other people's progress more easily. Anyway ... that's my wish list :)

Aussies, there is an "In Progress Kitchens" link in the current FKB. Look at the bottom of the Finished Kitchens alphabetical list. There are 3 additional links:

I don't know how comprehensive the list is, but there are quite a few kitchens there. E.g., Starpooh's kitchen there! (BTW, Starpooh...x=5cm, it's a 3-4-5 right triangle)

When I figure out how to upload photos you will be hearing more from me. I began in the fall with questions about a Craftman inspired kitchen. Cabs now ordered and it's less craftman now thru the time it took to decide but I think I will love the kitchen. Due to medical emergency/illness in (wonderful) contractor's family this winter, our total house renovation got delayed so kitchen won't go in until August so in a kitchen lull right now. You will be hearing more from me in the summer when we get back to kitchen details. Thanks everyone. I lurk daily here!

Agree with being able to post photos, but limiting the number, and not having a rating function. Mixed categories are good, as are categories for budget, the latter for those who don't feel shy sharing.

Other idea: How about adding a category that identifies the region of the poster, again only for those who don't feel uncomfortable sharing this information? Would be useful for sharing sources of products and services -- where to go and where not to go -- in given regions, and for tackling challenges common to certain regions.

I visit the finished kitchen blog frequently (thanks starpooh for all you do) I would love to see the kitchens listed by date so I can check out whats new right away!

Wow - thanks Buehl! How did I miss that?! It's even called In-Progress Kitchens :) I feel kinda silly now ... I guess I just always jump right in to the Category List page or the Find-A-Kitchen page. Are the IPKs searchable too?

Thank you for doing this!

I would love to see even more details. Like brands and color names of quartz or corian countertops, names of soapstones. The multiple category search would be great. Is it possible to make photos permenant so that broken links are not a problem in the future? It is obvious that Sooooooooooooo much work goes into all the details, then to have the photos and links showing those details disappear must get discouraging at times.

I would also have loved to have seen cabinet insides and organization options, like filler pullouts, lazy susans, after market additions, etc. Rev-a-shelf type stuff.

PAINT COLORS would be great! Greens, whites, etc. How many of us have seen a kitchen photo posted for the cabinets or granite and posted a reply asking WHAT is great color, it is I LOVE it?

I love the ideas of the description and date searches, also.

Mixed category searches would be great - I think it would make it easier to search the small kitchen/small budget/diy categories (categories near and dear to my heart and wallet)

No ratings - could open the door for unnecessary negativity, number of hits/views would be a nice feature though.

Details, details, details - the more details the better, we're obsessed!

The ability to upload photos would be nice but it can definitely fill up server memory.

HmmÂ I own a vBulletin message board that IÂm getting ready to pare down due to my own lack of interest during the kitchen remodel. It has all the functions listed and thatÂs where IÂve been keeping track of my progress.

If sharing space with an off-topic and outspoken message board is acceptable and you havenÂt already committed to something else, I would consider either hosting the FKB as whole or on a pay-per-member basis ($5-10 a year?) to cover the additional bandwith.

Sorry I have been "awol" for awhile, but I've been busy "playing with" potential designs for the new FKB based on your suggestions. Some ideas are easy to implement; others are not.
- OK! Ratings won't be included... but how about kitchenkelly's idea of putting a counter on each kitchen to see how many times it's been visited? Then perhaps we could see which kitchens are most popular. ????
- mixed categories with the ability to search with multiple criteria is doable.
- Allowing members to upload their own photos is also doable.
- Hopefully I'll be able to have comments emailed to the kitchen owners. Still working on the mechanics of this.
- Multiple layouts will be possible so the FKB, FAQ and the slideshows will be under the same domain name.
- "In Progress" section - great idea aussies! I'll look into this once I get the finished kitchens setup.
About the categories.... there are many categories already in the FKB checklist; including budget, DIY, square footage and floorplan. (link to the checklist). The checklist doesn't include backsplashes since there is a separate slideshow for them; but it should definitely be included in the new FKB so it's searchable.

New/updated categories:
- Regions - I really like venice_2008's idea about including the members' regions. Should we use regions or states? Regions could be Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, Southwest, and the West? Oh and also Canada, too!
- Paint colors (thanks for the idea, sue_ct!): Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet, Black, White. Others????
- Category for self-designed or kitchen designer - thanks for the idea jtsgranite4us!
- Backsplashes - will separate into three categories. What should the selections be in each category?
  ~ Backsplash Type: ?????
  ~ Backsplash Color: do you want "dark, light, neutral, colorful" as petra_il suggested, or actual colors ?????
  ~ Backsplash Material: Tile, glass, stone what else?????
Budget - When originally setting up categories for the checklist it was decided to track only low/medium/high budgets instead of by price range (since, as divamum mentioned, some members don't want to post actual numbers). Another problem was that some folks remodeled not only their kitchens but their dining rooms, etc and couldn't break down the number. But I agree that budget could be broken down a bit more. How about these breakdowns and numbers?
~ Super low: under $10K
~ Low: $10K-$25K
~ Medium: $25K-$60K
~ Medium high: $60K-$100K
~ High: $100K-$200K
~ "Sky's the limit" - over $200K (Thanks to igloochic for the idea!)
lindybarts - Thanks for mentioning the slideshows! One of the reasons for updating the design of the FKB is to make it easier for me to maintain. Adding new kitchens is currently a manual process and lately I've been having difficulty keeping up with the new kitchens! Unfortunately the slideshows have suffered. I did finally get the updated, but the backsplash slideshow probably won't be...

Wow, the new FKB is going to be AMAZING!

I like your idea about how to handle close-ups of convenience items. Just marking that a picture was available would get the job done and be super helpful.

I mentioned the counter idea because I think it is really interesting to see how many people view these threads. I posted my kitchen on Rate My Space at the end of Feb and over 6000 people have viewed it. The most viewed kitchen has been viewed almost 500,000 times. I think that is interesting. I am always curious on how many lurkers are out there.

Also, I put my kitchen out there just to see the reactions on the morgue drawers. (I was going through withdrawal.) The ratings are silly. People get too caught up in them.
