Wow, thank you for the pictures! That flowering almond is beautiful! Maybe I'll try that and/or sour cherries. From the other threads it sounds like sweet cherries, as well as peaches, are unlikely to do well in zone 4, except for a not-great tasting variety called 'Reliance' peach.. I don't know if that's an accurate sum-up of fruit growing in zone 4? I have a neighbour who's offered us his extra plum and grape plants; maybe I'll try those. (Our neighbour is a bit crazy and has a new 'scheme' every year. He was going to have a world-famous vineyard on his lawn a few years ago, and now in its place he's got a huge fixer-upper sailboat even though we're nowhere near water and he can't even swim, never mind sail, lol. He does have some nice plums though : ) ) From the thread 'wintering sweet cherries in zone 4', I see franktank reposted advice against planting tender fruit trees in sheltered sunny southern spots and that shady places can help keep the trees dormant through warm spells in the winter. I would have never thought of that!

Paula, your OS is sinfully huge, and just new last year!!! it is absolutely beautiful - it has a "purity" quality about it, as it also does in its yellow stage. I so LOVE this plant. When Paula/Ilovetogrow posted her pic on the Top Gun thread, I immediately fell for it. There were so many beautiful contenders I really had a hard time deciding, then I went with my first reaction. It just happened to be the first pic too, I think. It was a POW moment. Since then I've also acquired a few others from that thread. I'm grateful you added last year's pic. Thanks! ;-) Eleven, you have the ultimate canopy for hosta gardens. Just look at that beacon in the centre of the bed! All other plants seem to "attend" to her. Very, very lovely. Is that Devon Green down a bit from FD? Near what looks like Inniswood? Don't have either but guessing from memory? MadPlanter, you're so on point! I do have many other hostas that are compensating for the loss, extraordinarily doing so well. Each day I notice something new, or see leaves widen, corrugation appear, etc. I am in my element! The biggest difference this year is that there are no slug holes!!! I haven't seen a slug for at least a week now. I can enjoy the beauty of leaf and shape of a hosta without being distracted by slug bites. I'm convinced the population decreased due to the harsh winter. The small ones I found helped themselves to the bait I scattered around and they are gone! As for your MMA, I'm sorry you had to be disappointed. After I read your comment I checked on it in my Grenfell/Shadrack Encyclopedia and the centre does go through colour changes, but it doesn't go all green at all. It likes morning sun to maintain its lighter centre. You deserve the real thing!

To answer the OP's question - NO. Cherry will always redden as it ages and, in fact, I think deep colors tend to redden faster. Below is a 50 year old cherry bed with a protective finish but no stain (I would tell you it was my wife's childhood bed, but I am sure she can't be a day over 30)... I took a picture of a bed that I made two years ago that started with a deep chocolate color but after only two years the red hues are really starting to shine through, I would post that, but the picture is bad and the bed unmade so my wife would kill me. I will see if I can get a better picture tonight. I personally love the reddening of the deep dark colors, but if you really don't want it then I would recommend white oak for kitchen cabinets. White oak is more expensive and harder to work with than red oak (cheaper than cherry), but there is a reason that boats and barrels are so often made from white oak. It is incredibly moisture resistant and has very good color stability. The color you start with will be the color you have forever.
