Why do you need two king size duvet covers?

This is what we've been doing for 30 years or so: On our king size bed we have one bottom sheet covering the bed. We each have our own twin size top sheet and blanket that overlap a little in the middle. The entire bed is covered with one bedspread that we fold down to the foot at night. We never, ever mess up each other's top covers.

Sherry - good idea - I guess I was nervous how it would look - but that makes so much sense. I'm starting my ninth month so my common sense has gone out the window!

Aha! That is exactly when we went to the separate covers! Congratulations!

As for how it looks, no one can possibly tell the difference when the bed is made. We have a bedspread now, but have had comforters in the past. Here's another tip: If you plan to nurse your baby in bed, use a full (or double) sheet on your side. Works like a charm to keep you and the little one cuddly without disturbing Daddy. (I know, I know, you're not supposed to take your baby to bed with you, but I always did anyway.)

Smile! And get as much rest as you can now. Maybe you'll have a little Valentine!

This may not answer your question. We have different warmth needs and live in a cold climate. I just got an electric mattress pad with separate controls for each side of the bed. Wow! Love being warm now and spouse can be cooler.

We haven't used it yet but we bought an electric blanket (even for our moderate Southern CA climate) to help deal with the issues of a lot of blankets. I like only a comforter and DW likes about 5 blankets on top of that. Needless to say it's not an attractive solution. Since the new electric blanket has controls for each side like lkremodel's mattress pad, we're hoping we may need only the blanket and the comforter. We will be getting a king size bed within in a year. I really like Sherrmann's idea of using two twin blankets under a king size bedspread, but doesn't it look a little lumpy in the middle where they overlap? Or is the bedspread thick? I love the solution, but I'm trying to figure out how it could work for us because extra blankets on one side would look lopsided...

Hmmm, DH likes more blankets than I do, so he has two wools on his side, I have only one. I haven't noticed that his side looks higher, and, yes, the bedspread is kind of "thick." I hadn't really thought about the problem you present.

I hope the dual control blanket helps, but if it doesn't, maybe a big, puffy down comforter on top of everything?

I'm a big fan of a good down comforter. They seem to adjust to the temperature (I know they don't, they just seem to!) and we use ours year round except for a few weeks in the summer. It does need to be one large enough to hang down on the sides. Sometimes the comforter are coverlet size and they just don't stay in place as well.

DH and I also have different temperature preferences. I've always solved that problem by keeping an extra throw at the base of the bed and pulling it up just on my side. I also dress warmer to bed than he does so that about solves it.

thanks all - valinsv - we each like our own blanket because w eboth are a bit restless in sleep and tend tpo wake each otehr up when we use the same blanket - but i like down and he likes a thin cottoj - go figure - it's freezing here at night!

Bed coverings... my current pet peeve. Finally traded the comforter for a coverlet. Worked great in summer but in fall I added a twin comforter over my side. In winter, DH added a thin wool blanket over his side. Underneath the coverlet the lumps would be visible but on top, it's a pain to remove them in the morning. I'm also finding the King coverlet difficult to maneuver - it sort of sticks to the sheets. Love the look maybe not so practical.
The electric blanket solution intrigues me. Can anyone talk about their experiences with electric blankets? Are they safe?

We used electric blankets when I was growing up and they seemed to be safe as long as you followed the instructions. But we don't use them at all! We still share the covers although it might be time to change that. Married 30 + plus years and it still irritates me when hubby gets out of bad and cold air shoots down my back. : (

FWIW, I just ordered a down alternative comforter from The Company Store. I hope we don't suffocate under it, we keep the heat off at night and it gets very cold, even here in the south.

My son invested in something he absolutely loves. It's a silk-filled comforter. It's super lightweight, but it tends to sink down around the body and mold to the body's curves. He's thrilled with it in both winter and summer. Might be worth looking into.

Remember that the OP is about to have a baby. I'd be very wary of having an electric blanket with a baby around. I know that not everyone has the baby in bed with them, and it's not been "proven" that electric blankets aren't safe, etc etc, but I wouldn't take the chance.

But a silk-filled comforter? That sounds like a wonderful gift for the new family!

Ilanab, silk comforters used to be only for the very wealthy. But with China's market opening up and their getting more modern manufacturing, the prices have come down. I've seen silk filled comforters on the web as low as $69.00. If you google them you can read up on them on various sites. They also sell on eBay and Overstock.com.

Recommended care is keep them in a duvet cover and wash the cover; air the comforter in the sunshine twice a year. Spot clean if needed. If absolutely necessary, you can launder them in your washing machine and either air or tumble dry. Frequent washing can damage the silk layering system, they say.

My partner and I run at different temperatures. I'm always cold.

Our solution is: king-size warm comforter in a duvet cover for me, thinner comforter for her. In the morning, the king-size comforter covers the whole bed, and her comforter gets folded up on the bottom of the bed. Looks nice, everyone is at the right temperature.

I have a silk blanket that is my FAV of all times...love it-got it at Tuesday Morning!
