What is it? How do I make it?

I had some take out BBQ last weekend, and it came with a traditional BBQ sauce and a sauce called Alabama white. It looked sort of like cream and was sweet and vinegar-ey.. and hot...but I didn't taste any horse radish nor see flecks of red...nor taste that smokey habanero flavor.

they called it "Traditional Alabama sauce"...so I guess it's just sometbing I have never had.

Any ideas where I would start to replicate it?

By the way it was from Jethro's for anyone in the Des Moines area.

It's basically a mayo coleslaw dressing and the spices vary. I have some recipes for it. I'll dig it out and post it.

Ok....these are soil mites, like it or not. :-) All of the appendages ARE legs, but aren't used exactly like you seem to think all legs on all creatures work. The longest pair are used sort of like antennae in that they check out the pathway in front of the mite. There are many species of soil mites, each behave in different ways. This one resembles the images of the predatory mites I've seen images of....feeding on springtails, fungus gnat larvae, etc. They don't feed on plants. Other soil mites are decomposers, feeding on the smaller bits of organic matter in our potting soils. They don't feed on plants. There are others, but those two groups are the most likely to be found in a houseplant container. There is no need to use a systemic pesticide on these critters. Imidicloprid pesticides can actually cause an increase of the pest (phytophagous) mites. The DE that I mentioned earlier would be a good product to use. Controlling arthropods is what horticultural grade DE is used for and has been for many years. Don't use the type of DE used for filtering. The next time you repot, you might (pun!) treat the mix in advance by pouring several pots of boiling water through the pot, or placing a pile of the moistened mix in a clear garbage bag, close it tightly and let the hot summer sun pasturize it for a few days. I don't like to recommend oven or microwave baking. You are just one of lots of people in these forums who have fretted over what had turned out to be harmless (beneficial) soil mites. No need to worry.

So... a few observations and then a couple questions... First - it's going to be really hard for anyone other than an Entomologist to identify a particular butterfly/moth/critter from it's larva... except in very specific circumstances... Best thing to do would be to keep it fed and let it pupate - and then hatch as whatever sort of critter it is.... then identify that thing.... It's not a worm. Not a slug. It looks most like a catterpillar or a grub of some sort.... So.. Does it have catterpillar type legs (Soft, fleshy, part of it's body) along it's whole length.. or does it have several bug legs that are all together on one part of it's body like what you would see on a beetle?.. This will narrow down "Catterpillar" vs "Grub"... Catterpillars turn into Moths and Butterflies... Grubs turn into Beetles... Next - what sort of plants/trees was it around? Do you see any moths or butterflies on similar plants? If it seems like it only lives down in the dirt in the grass - that points you in 1 particular direction... If it seems to be living under a maple tree or in your garden weeds - that might take you in another direction.... But.. On a guess - I googled up "Sod web worm" images.. Your critter looks kinda like some of the images that pop up... Does that look like what you are holding in your hand? If so - check out Grub control and insecticide products listed for such things... IMHO - those are not "Beautiful Butterflies"... Thanks

OK I thought someone who new better would have answered you already but here's my thought. I think they look flat like scale but I've never seen scale on tomatoes or they are aphids. Search on this forum under "organic ways to get rid of aphids", lots of ideas there. If its scale I'm not sure the best way to get rid of them, I only had a few on some plants that I pick off. I hope this isn't too late.

Actually, I believe the undertone of Chamois is green. apple_pie_order_ is correct by saying the new bulbs will help. The one caveat is the new bulbs will, most likely, change the tone of other colors in the room as well. What else is going on in the kitchen? What did you paint the woodwork? Counters/tile/floor? They are all part of the mix. as lights colors can take on a neighboring influence…like the green trees outside or the Brazilian Cherry floor. Personally, the idea of Chamois on your cabinets sounds beautiful. I would continue using it, here and there; make it a dominate color.. B.M. silver chain looks beautiful with it, and if you continue to add more of the chamois…yum!

If you're trying to duplicate what they had then probably stick closer to the basic recipe. I find that white sauce pretty bland so I doctored it up when I would use it.

Cynic's Variation of "White Trash BBQ Sauce"
2 cups mayonnaise
1 cup apple cider vinegar
1/2 cup apple juice
2 tsps (+/-) prepared horseradish
2 tsps fresh ground black pepper
2 tsps fresh lemon or lime juice
1 tsp kosher (or sea) salt (see notes)
1/2 tsp cayenne or Chili pwdr

Combine all ingredients in a very large bowl. Season your chicken and grill or bbq it as you like. When itÃ¢ÂÂs done, take that hot, smokey chicken and dunk it in the bowl of white sauce, turning to coat. Serve immediately with your favorite sides.

For me it was vastly superior to the slaw dressing versions but still pretty boring so I tweaked it with some lemon pepper, bacon salt (cutting the other salt), Italian Seasoning, smoked paprika, cumin, celery seed, garlic powder and onion powder and it was much better.

As with any condiment it's subject to taste so add, subtract, multiply and divide to your preference! Since it's essentially a slaw dressing as I said, I used my slaw dressing for ideas to perk it up.

ynnej - I find "google it" to be the utmost irritating response on this forum regardless of who says it, or to whom. If we didn't prefer answers from our "friends" as opposed to the rest of the world we wouldn't post the question here. Offhand I don't think Linda is a particular offender, but then again I'm not keeping count. I think you're going to have to try harder than that to infringe on her trademark, but it was a start. I remember this one from Paula's show a few years back. Tried it and liked it okay - I probably added more spice but honestly now I can't remember.

Big Bob's Gibson's White Sauce
Recipe courtesy Bob Gibson's BBQ
Show: Paula's Home CookingEpisode: Paula's Southern BBQ

Yield:
about 1 cup

Ingredients:

1/2 cup mayonnaise
1/4 cup water
2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon prepared horseradish
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 tablespoon sugar

Directions:

Combine all ingredients in bowl and mix well.

If it's snark you are trying for Enny-jay...you missed! LOL!
This sauce was lots more complex than just mayo and vinegar...but I tasted no hint of horseradish. And I thbink the vinegar was white vinegar nit cider vinegar.
I suspect Gina's version may come close....I'll give it a try!

I had hoped that one of our southern posters would have a T and T old family recipe

Southern Plate's recipe is pretty basic. I would have thought it would have more ooomph than it does. I hope someone chimes in that knows more about it.

White Barbecue Sauce
2 Cups Mayonnaise
1 1/2 Tablespoons salt
2 Tablespoons black pepper
6 Tablespoons white vinegar
6 Tablespoons lemon juice
4 Tablespoons white sugar
Instructions

Mix all ingredients together and stir well.

Suddenly I seem to recall a thread here about white bbq sauce not too many ages ago, but searching for it seems to bring up KT threads, not CF threads. Regardless, looks to me it's once again just a variation on a theme and you just need to figure out what you want in it. Cynic's additions make it sound better to me.

It wasn't all that satisfying- don't know what you get out of it, Lindac. Maybe most of your snarking is done in conjunction with BLT's. Maybe FOAS will use this as a way to bring up politics. Maybe you're all nice as pie. Maybe not. It's my 30th Birthday today. So long and thanks for all the fish.

Thanks, Evenshade...I make that stuff...but I call it "imperial dressing" and I make it with Hellman's mayo and a little less pepper....and sometimes I add blue cheese...makes it a "whole nother thing".
This was white....and a house speciality from a local 3 location "chain"...so I expect I will have no choice but to go back and try it again....and see what I can taste.

And...add a good tablespoon of finely chopped onion for the onion powder...

The kids used to call it "Mom's pink dressing"....whatever!! LOL! Just don't call me late for dinner!
