Custom cabinetmaker suggestions Northern Ill/Southern Wisc

Hi need some help in locating quality custom cabinetmakers in Northern Ill/ Southern Wisc for a kitchen job - about 40 linear ft. traditional look. Found great ideas and inspiration here and am now ready to move to construction. Anyone who wants to share a name of someone they found to be great to work with would be appreciated.

I'm just finishing a kitchen by Nuwood out of Racine. All custom carcass & door sizing makes life MUCH easier than force-fitting the stock cabinet sizes to fit your space. They have someone make the doors for them while they do everything else, including finishing. Three-quarter plywood is standard, no funiture board. I have spindles inset on cabinet corners (like they should be) rather than hanging full spindles off the edge of cabinets for that "faux" look. No one else could do inset spindles..which I thought was very odd as this is how furniture is built & the intent is cabinets mimicing furniture. They can do most anything your looking for. I wanted 3 inch on center beadboard & they didn't have a source, but they said if you can find it we'll use it. I found it in Madison & they did a nice job with it.

Phil is the owner. Mention a recent cherry & warm-white beadboard kitchen with soapstone counters and he'll know me. They still have to finish some trimwork once I finish the floor.

If you work with them you'll be the GC. They have trades guys they can suggest (I used them & they were good), but you work with the trades directly & do the logistics of getting them in at various points. Naturally...if you're the GC you need to know what you want from the trades...while electricians/HVAC guys know what works, they are not designers. If you need some reasonably priced & good design help I can suggest another person.

I had three estimates and thought NuWood was fair in cost. Mostly I liked the flexiblilty of "custom" & "local"...BIG help. Nice people to work with. Been in business for 50 years.

I'm a Realtor (17 yrs) and have had at least six clients use Schmidt Cabinets. While I am in Louisville, they are in Southern Indiana. (About half way between us). I am currently (as I type) having them install cabinetry in my home. The cabinets are beautiful, well constructed and by industry standards are very reasonable. For what I have selected, I couldn't find anyone else comparable- The box stores were 2x's more for lower quality w/ fewer options. Don't know what your tastes and style prefs. are but they have made most of the upgrades standard by streamlining their production methods. Now, raised panel, full extension, soft close, inset doors, hidden hinges, opaque toners (ie- white, cream,etc),installation are all either standard or not an up charge. I was so thrilled - I was able to get a kitchen I thought I could NEVER afford. Good luck on your search. There are so many quality cabinet makers out there. Merry Xmas all! Have any of you being partaking in any pepper related festivities over the holidays? Every time I go into my freezers I am reminded of how many peppers I have socked away. I've got mason jar after mason jar plus many ziplocs full of the different varieties I grew over the summer. Today I decided to make a batch of scotch bonnet mash. I had a few Trinidad perfumes and aji orchids in there but not many. I used a tbsp or so of habanero mash I am currently eating to help kickstart the ferment since the peppers were frozen. Other than that just used salt, a tiny bit of sugar and some garlic. The fact that the peppers were half frozen when I buzzed them up in the food pro was a major advantage. There were practically no fumes and the pepper pieces chopped up very nicely without turning to mush.

I love Virgil's pictures and think design should often trump function but feel the need to point out many of those overhangs wouldn't meet traditional passive solar criteria for south facing windows. The overhangs appear very deep, and close to window tops, which could easily be the intent of the designer. If the windows are south-facing they will be brightened by winter light, but there's plenty of opportunity for those seeking to squeeze more performance out of less windows. A crude rule of thumb for the middle latitudes of the US is 12"-24" deep, 12" to 24" above the window, which is a pretty short overhang compared to the pictures. Taller windows are harder to shade and northern latitudes actually benefit from deeper overhangs. The most simple overhang tool I point to in my above passive solar design link is sustainable by design's overhang tool. You can plug in your latitude and window height to find the best balance of shade and sunlight for the time of year, generally aiming for full sunlight on the winter solstice and full shade on the summer solstice. The left side of this Springtime Cottage design faces south. The picture was taken near the winter solstice, notice how the shade line is at the top of the windows. The upper level has shorter windows and benefits from a shorter overhang. Around the summer solstice, those short overhangs completely shade the windows. This home was designed by a local architect and takes advantage of a westward sloping lot. We excavated and retained the south side to open the basement up for passive solar design while the west end is mostly shaded by a deep, two level covered porch and carefully protected existing trees. Designers don't need to follow these principles exactly to achieve good light and energy performance, I just wanted to point out that traditional passive solar overhangs are relatively short.

Our club is devoted to the genus Lilium. True lilies. We are selling asiatic lilies, oriental lilies, trumpet lilies, a few species lilies, and a few other divisions / categories. Sorry if I was not clear when I posted. I originally posted in the Lily forum, then Houzz suggested a couple of other forums, and I added those, not thinking that I should consequently alter my post to clarify. These IS a Daylily Society too; they have their sale in the spring. I don't belong to that one though I've bought at their sale. The confusion between DAYlilies (Hemerocallis) and true lilies (Genus Lilium) gets frustrating. Really wish there were not so many plants that used "Lily" in their names. From "Lily of the Valley" to "Peace Lily", a houseplant. And it is guaranteed that someone coming to our table during the sale will say, "Lilies! I hate those things. Ugly strappy leaves. Taking over my yard", and ask how they can get rid of their 'ditch lilies' (Hemerocallis fulva), and are we available to come dig them up. We can even have them! For FREE! I know it's a long shot posting our sale here: but we did have someone from southern WI who saw it last year and decided to time their planned trip to the botanic garden for that weekend. They bought 35 bulbs. Yay! Here is a list of what we are offering: we have a new president and she opted for variety. So when it's gone, it's gone. I couldn't tell you off the top of my head what division all of these are in. But they are from a top lily bulb breeder. guy, I would definitely like the name of the design person you mentioned.

thank you both for the recommendations, it helps to have a place to start.

mairin your cabinets are beautiful, I have always loved the look of walnut, sorry I can't you use it in my light challenged space. Your guy's work looks good, the "coastlining" of the cabinets really adds a lot of interest.
