Rates vary widely so it's hard to compare. My insurance agent says we're 'dream' clients - clean records, cars paid for, no debts, no mortgages, no tickets, strong credit ratings.

For 2 cars for 6 months I pay $1100 which includes both uninsured and under insured motorists. My DH's car is less than 1 year old and mine is 2 years old - they are both high end luxury vehicles. Our deductible is $500 and we have full coverage. I checked into raising our deductible to $1000. but we would only have saved $60. a vehicle so I stayed with the $500.

We have ours with a small company that only insures drivers with good records. I've checked out other companies (including some of those that advertise they've got the lowest rates) over the years, and I've never been able to find anyone cheaper.

Of course, this is the exact reason why it's important to have an independent Insurance agent--one who can do the shopping for you, and find you the best deal with the best company. State Farm agents only represent State Farm, don't they? You might want to just pop your head into another agency and see if they can get you a better number. Also, it's generally cheaper to pay the full year, rather than splitting it into payments.

Not sure exactly what you have. Our insurance is about $1600--that's for 2 vehicles (one pick-up truck, one FJ Cruiser), good coverage on each, with full coverage on the FJ, and we live in a suburb of Philadelphia, so our rates tend to be higher anyway. It's actually a very, very good price for what we've got.

I switched both our auto & home insurance a little over a year ago to USAA & saved considerably. I got really ticked with our Nationwide agent & we had been with N/w for decades. So I did my research & found USAA to be highly rated with A.M.Best & some other rating group. USAA had started out as only insuring military people, but have expanded to any veteran or a family member ... dh was in the Army for 3 yrs & our adult son is thus eligible to insure with USAA. So don't let that aspect deter you if you're not sure of a linkage.

USAA advertises on tv, but neither dh nor I had noticed their commercials until we hooked up with them. So you might have seen them on tv.

So... I would recommend you check the ratings of any company you are considering & shop around. You might be surprised what you find. I know I was!

(SIGH) -- I WISH we could get USAA! 3 of our 4 kids have everything from them (2 veterans and a spouse of an active duty before their divorce.) They let kids of veterans get auto/home insurance, but not parents. My veteran Dad died before I heard of USAA and he'd have to be a client for me to be eligible. :-( We got killed on insurance moving to FL. We were with State Farm forever, 2 vehicles, home and umbrella policy. Weeeeelll, State Farm no longer does home in FL! And there went all the multi stuff discount. GRRRR. OK, rant over -- but why won't USAA let parents be part of their group? :-P

I have 3 vehicles insured with State Farm and none of these cost that much and I am carrying extra personal liability to cover my occasional passengers. Around here, there are 3 big factors that affect the cost. These are: 1) the car's home base, 2) number of miles driven commuting in rush hour traffic, and 3) number of youthful drivers.

I could nearly double my insurance cost if I'd move one county away and into certain neighborhoods of a large city. Yeah I know, red-lining is frowned upon, but what else do you call it when the insurer uses your zip code to set your rates? However, when I look at the crime reports from that city, I do understand the rationale.

Insurance companies are a real sore spot with me. I call them legalized crooks. What other product or service are you required by law to buy? Then, when you do use the product/service that you paid for, you get punished by having the price raised or taken away from you. (canceled). I say this partly tongue-in-cheek, but it is not far from the truth.

All State all the way for me. I have cars, golf cart, renters, umbrella - that I can think of off the top of my head - all with them. I've been with them for 20 years.

Rates depend on age, driving records,vehicle type, state etc. There are also some policies that seem to be the highest. Single car policies with no support will generally be the highest out there. If you have a home,insure both of them together for multiple policy discounts. Even if you don't own, try a renters policy. Sometimes the savings alone on the auto can pay for the renters policy.
Auto insurance is mandatory in most if not all states now. You'd be suprised how many people are going without it though. Just from seeing my cancellation audits done weekly I'd have to agree with the national statistics that 1 of every 6 drivers is going without insurance. Most people couldn't self insure, I know I couldn't.

Call around for some quotes. Most companies have online quotes too so you don't even have to call.

I have an old car (89' toyota cressida), also never had a wreck or ticket, and I pay $33/month. Don't have full coverage, only liability and towing (I think the towing is only $3 more a month). I go through Geico.

It seems to me like you're paying too much for an 03' without full coverage.

been with state farm about 25 years. I pay just under $1200 for the year.
I also have homeowners for about $600 a year.
I have never filed a claim for anything.

I have full coverage thru AARP (Hartford) They lowered my annual premium this year from $662 to $499. Have not had a claim. I attribute the low premium to low mileage and zip code. I have an '03 Chevy S10 PU with under 50,000 mi. I checked blue book this year to see about lowering to Liab. only but the savings wasn't enough to make it worthwhile. That's when they lowered my current coverage premium. Never hurts to ask.

If your car is older,meaning not worth a lot if you were to sell it, you may want to drop "collision" coverage. But keep full coverage for accidents involving bodily damage. Also might want to increase your deductible. Went to our agent who suggested we do both to lower our premiums. He also gave me a printout of all family members' driving records. We have two "chargeable" accidents plus four tickets. Our premiums are way high-about $2000 for six months. I won't say name of company , but it starts with "A".

USAA here .... Five cars, full coverage: $900 every 6 months. No tickets, no wrecks, excellent credit rating, $500 deductible.
