I'm sure you've seen the price of new vehicles so I'm sure it's across the board and not just you. I want a new truck but at $70K plus another $5600 for sales tax and then paying over $2K for insurance it ain't going to happen.

I just paid my 6-month premium, and compared with last year. Mine went up $120 for six months. No claims. House won't be generated until summer.

OTOH, homeowner’s insurance here has become a real problem, especially if you’re looking for a new policy. They’ve said doing business in California is increasingly a losing proposition for insurance companies due to rising construction costs, wildfire risks and the global price of reinsurance (policies insurance companies take out for themselves). Whatever the reasons and what’s behind them, getting a new policy could be difficult.

DH just heard on the news and mentioned yesterday that auto policies may be going up all across the board this year. Ours seems high to me already since neither one of us are driving new and we've had no claims, no tickets. I'll have to ask him what he was viewing when he watched the report, if it was a legitimate source....

My agent told me a couple of years ago that the increase then stemmed from the new law that credit ratings could no longer be considered when annual fees produced....ours has only the option of a once a year payment for best price. They couldn't bill according to credit rating reports and all of us paid....

Just looking at my past year’s bills and it’s weird, they jump up to about $50 higher a month over the summer months and now back down to what they were last January.. Nov/May policies so I’m not making sense of the cycle.

Coincidentally I’ve been thinking my insurance seems really high so I called a new agent this morning. Combined, looks liks she can save us a few hundred, but with annual insurance costs in the $12K range it hardly seems worth the risk to change. (This is home, auto, and umbrella.) Insanity. can’t imagine what it would look like with tickets, accidents, other claims, less than excellent credit, etc.

@morz8 - Washington Coast - Interesting about the credit, as the agent asked whether I wanted her to use me or my wife for the credit lookup. Maybe it varies by state?

Mine went up when I bought a newer car. I have full coverage now. Not sure how long I'm going to keep it, though, as it is pretty expensive.

If you use an independent broker, they should be able to shop around several companies to get you the best deal. If you deal with a so-called captive agent who only sells one company, then you are stuck unless you leave that agent. We have had our agent call us and suggest another company that would be a better fit and cheaper for us. When I shopped around, I found the captive agents, USAA and State Farm to both be higher than what our independent agent could do for us.

Went up. Asked agent why. They didn't answer. I didn't follow up, because the other driver on my cars left, and I took them off both cars. And I shut down insurance on the little car since it's been sitting since kiddo left. One car is a 2019 (no claims, even though someone hit me) and in good working order. Other, a 1990, just needs a starter. No biggie. Both have liability only. I am not sure why I should have to have a huge hike I received. Should've been much smaller since I have older cars with no claims, and I have been with them for a very long time. I can't imagine, if it was scale, how much other people have to fork out.

My husband is no longer driving, and gave up his license last summer when it came up for renewal. He got a state ID instead. He's got macular degeneration, and hasn't driven in several years. But we still have two cars. I asked my agent if we should adjust our insurance and she said, No. It is more expensive insurance-wise to have one driver and two cars than two drivers. Doesn't make sense to me. I know I need to get rid of one car, but that's hard. My 06 Odyssey has 140K miles and runs beautifully. The '14 CRV only has 45K miles on it, so it would be dumb to get rid of it. Right now I drive each on alternate weeks.

We have 3 vehicles here and one just turned 25 YO which qualifies it for an "antique" license plate, I plan to apply for it soon. Our next annual auto Ins payment isn't due until May and I will alert them beforehand that our 98' Caravan is now an "antique" and see how our costs are adjusted. By registering the caravan as an antique it will be restricted to certain driving conditions which should decrease it's cost for coverage. Basically it's been used as a craigslist mule and for large loads heading for the local dump. If this thread is still active I'll post my new bill in May, right now it's close to $800/year for all 3 vehicles.

I have an antique plate. You can't use the vehicle as a regular vehicle and have that plate. It has limited use.

Your state will be different than mine, but it reduces how you can drive the vehicle

I wouldn't have thought anything less than 50 years old or more would warrant special recognition. And many of those still rolling are junkers anyway, at least in my area.

Yes, about 25%. I filed a hail dent claim on one and got a new windshield for one. I have free glass and a zero comp deductible. So I didn't pay anything out-of-pocket for each claim.

I’m in Massachusetts and mine went up too even though my car is 10 years old and paid off.

We have 5 cars. 2 cars are insured with an insurance company that ties with a homeowners insurance, it didn’t go up in price. 3 cars are insured with a different insurance company, it ties with a different homeowner’s insurance , that car insurance went up $240.

Rob333, yes my "antique" Caravan will be restricted to driving no more than 250 miles from it's residence and cannot be used for regular driving such as to and from work. I doubt that I drive it more than 25 miles tops from home or more than a total of 500 miles per year.

Elmer, vehicles over 50 YO here can qualify for a "Vintage" license plate.

The 6 month premium on all 4 of my vehicles went up about 8-10% from the first payment of 2023 to the second payment. Pretty much like everything else these days,

Ours went up a little but I will know in Feb exactly now much when our full premium is due. We each bought new vehicles in the past 3 months so had to pay a little additional due to that. We have excellent insurance with our provider and don’t worry anout filing claims. DH had a deer hit the side of his truck a couple of years ago and I had a cracked windshield due to a rock strike right after the Covid lockdown. Those are the only claims we have had I can ever recall.

It is totally expected that car insurance is going up, along with everything else, due to the cost of replacing things on vehicles these days.

edited to add, all our insurance is bundled, both our homes (primary and lake place, outbuilding/barn and equipment, 3 cars, personal property, which helps with rates.

The biggest jump for us isn’t auto insurance, it’s property taxes at our primary, it went up more than 4 times of auto insurance’s jump,

I've owned two cars purchased new and sold after accumulating >250K miles. I doubt you have done anything similar with even one.

Vgkg Z, your plan to buy collector plates does make sense if your state laws are similar to mine. I have a 05 gmc pickup I bought new so when it turns 20 my plans are to apply for collector plates to avoid needing to renew the plates and fees associated. I rarely use it and it can sit out until it turns to a pile of rust (half way there), and to annoy the busybody Karen's walking by ready to call the city when they see a vehicle with expired plates.

In my state a "collector" car only needs to be 20 years old and to qualify the law only states the vehicle can not be your daily driver and you must have another licensed vehicle in your name. Not really restrictive or a deal breaker.

My brother's collector car has been appraised by the insurance company at $170,000 which I helped him find when I lived in Texas 36 yrs ago (he was 18) it cost $1,500. He does drive it often in the summer months to shows and rallies, or to just cruises around town and perfectly legal to do so. So If I just happened to cruise to the compost site or a plant sale no big deal.

Collector plates aren't stupid and have significant value. The plates in MN have no expiration date, no need to renew them each year, and will stay with the car as long as it's registered in Minnesota. They are exempt from taxes and anyone who buys the collector is exempt from vehicle sales taxes. Depending how the laws are written in Virginia you could save a considerable amount of money, I know your state has a 4.15% vehicle registration tax and it's illegal not to register a car.

I just looked up Virginia law and it's a a one time fee of $50 and plates and they do not expire, no more taxes, inspections, and what ever. Similar usage laws as Mn but has the same loop hole "for the occasional pleasure driving" so on a pleasure drive you end up at the dump, don't judge, right? Your Caravan is worth a few grand so the first year you'll pay for the collector plates and save another $50.

Well, we're in FL, and insurance rates have been growing for autos and homes for years now. I don't expect relief any time soon. When I spoke to our agent last year, she had nothing to offer in the way of savings. They're all higher here now.

While the broker I spoke with yesterday was only able to quote me about $500 savings, she did point out several things to look out for when comparing policies, how to qualify for additional savings, etc. She also pointed out one factor that would make many companies not cover my house, and knew where to go for coverage. Something I may consider addressing down the road. So there’s some value in a good broker, IMO, even if it costs a few bucks more.

Kevin you covered all of the bases about the Va antique law. My caravan is an antique by age and not by beauty, definitely not in the "collector" column. If someone offered me $500 for it I'd be stealing from them. I like the part of a one time $50 charge for the plates and no future inspections because it would not pass today. It's a rust bucket, the dash board lights & gauges work only on occasion, the headlights are glitchy, the windshield wipers might work at times, and 3 out of 4 speakers have failed. No pleasure drives for sure and no driving in the rain nor at night. Only the 2 front seats remain (just good for hauling stuff) and the only saving graces are that the AC works, it starts up easy, runs well, and it has only 117,000 miles on it....to the dump, to the dump, to the dump, dump, dump...

At a certain age it will jump to teenager prices.

I was surprised--not pleasantly--at the amount of my insurance bill. I bought a new car, but I thought that would be at least partially offset by going from two cars to one. Nope, it went up. Maybe my age is a factor, as Arcy mentioned.

Evidently, Iosses/claims from recent catastrophic weather and wildfire events is another reason rates keep rising.

Parts and paint to repair vehicles have gone sky high. Some parts have almost double since 2021. Labor rates are up 40% to entice people to work in the trades. Used car values are up. Depending on the area, prices are up 30 to 50% over 2020. Every accident is costing the insurance companies more money whether it be in repairs or in payouts on total losses. The insurance companies are passing on those costs to consumers in the form of increased premiums.

Most new vehicles are larger, heavier, and all have more electronics now too. Tires also need to be larger.

Very true Carol, cars are getting bigger and heavier. People are moving more to Trucks and SUV's and both are getting bigger. New model pickups are looking like billboards in the front and a fad similar to the fins on the cars in the 50's.

Heavier too, the bigger size takes more materials, and electric cars weigh in at about 30% more than it's counterpart gas engine vehicle. You also have a good eye on those tires because they are getting bigger making those new huge cars look proportional.

I got a big one, it's huge! The engine roars and tuned for performance, but when I wake up and look out the window all I see is a kia Rio.

FWIW, there's also more liability attached to these bigger vehicles, as they are more deadly to pedestrians and smaller vehicles. Consumer advocates are working to get auto manufacturers to do something about it.
