Suggestions for wall behind 36' rangetop under 42' hood

Hello everyone.

Our kitchen will have a 36" rangetop (Wolf) and we've matched that with a 42" rangehood (Wolf) per manufacturer's recommendation.

As the rangehood has warming lamps in the back, we want to have a stainless steel shelf on the wall below the rangehood. So, we ordered our rangetop with the optional 20" riser with shelf. At that time, we were planning on going with a 36" rangehood and we were thinking that we'd source a sheet of stainless for the wall to go from the top of the riser to the bottom of the rangehood...this would have given us a clean stainless look from the top of the rangehood down to the rangetop.

Well, now that we're going with a 42" rangehood, this idea doesn't work so well because of the additional 3" of space on each side of the rangetop. A 36" sheet of stainless from the riser to the bottom of a 42" rangehood will not look very good. And, at the level of the riser shelf, there would be three inches on each side between the end of the shelf and the exterior sides of the upper cabinets that are on either side of the rangehood. I think the riser will make our built-in rangetop look like a slide-in appliance.)

We have thought about just putting a plain 42" stainless steel sheet back there from the bottom of the rangehood down to the cooktop, but we don't want a configuration that doesn't give us a shelf.

Wolf (and the others) sell backsplashs with deep, folding shelves with grates...but we don't like the look of the folding shelves.

Has anybody else out there tackled this problem? I see on the Wolf website that, on the page for their 48" sealed burner rangetop, there is a picture of an installation where the 52" rangehood has a 52" backsplash with a solid 10" shelf running across the whole length (see link below). I think that would probably address my concerns but I don't know how one would go about trying to source something like that.

Look in the Yellow Pages under "Metal Fabricators" in your area. They can provide you with the stainless steel sheet for the backsplash, and they could fabricate a stainless steel shelf to your exact specifications.

I looked at the picture you linked, but notice that in the picture, they have stuff on the counters to block your view of how the wider SS panel looks at counter height. I'm sure they did that intentially, because that's where I think using a 42" wide panel will look bad.

I also have a 36" rangetop and 42" hood, so I know exactly what you're talking about. How much clearance do you have between the hood and the adjacent upper cabinets? Will the rest of the backsplash be tiled?

My suggestion is to use the 20" riser with shelf, and use the same backsplash tile to fill the gap between the top of the shelf and the bottom of the hood. That will be the best way to avoid a width mis-match, and as a bonus, the 10" or so of tile above the riser will be a nice visual accent.

i'm afraid you lost me on the blower. Is the blower high enough that can vent sideways through the attic without going back down a wall? A picture/drawing would be helpful. Also some a rough idea of how long the run will be (and number of bends). A long run will impact the size of blower you need. rough rules I remember for CFM is 1 CFM per 100 BTU (.03 kw) with more being needed for long runs/multiple bends. A WOLF puts out 90,000 BTUs so a minimum 900 cfm is recommended by them. We have 1200 CFM blower and seldom use it at max. Too much? - maybe, too little - no way and the blower was not expensive. I do not believe you will have any issues "communicating" with the blower. You will have to run electrical wiring between the insert and blower. Silencers are offered by many companies and are designed to cut the noise down (think of a muffler). In San Francisco Bay area, several of the better appliance stored have them and some have them hooked up to demonstrate. My hood is not that loud but I like things as quiet as possible and would have installed one if I had the room. We have a VAH in one house and you cannot talk/hear under it without talking load - no problem with the abbaka liner/remote blower. Here is a link that might be useful: silencers

Funny, your range/hood set up is pretty much EXACTLY what mine (in the works) is to be. Although I don't have G shaped kitchen...I have a G with a gap in it. My 36 inch range will be on one of the short legs, with 9 inches on either side plus the 24" of the "corner" counter on one side. And I've ordered a 42" hood. ANd no upper cabs on either side of the hood. I plan to make my tiled backsplash run at 18"" (under cabinet height) from the corner to the range, then go up the full height to the hood, then back down for the last 9" stretch of counter. It seems to me that it would look better to have the behind-the-range backsplash align with the size of the range, than with the hood and those "strips" on either side of the range backsplash will simply blend in with the painted wall to the left and right of the hood. I'm interested to know if others have a different opinon though...preferably before I get to the tile work!

I won't recommend specific hoods that I haven't owned. Performance requirements first, cost vs. aesthetics to meet performance second. Assuming a wall hood... Overlap is needed front-to-back as well as side-to-side. Assume a hood entry aperture of 42 inches by 24 inches (from a 27 inch deep hood). This is a hood entry aperture area of 7 square feet. You will need 90 CFM/sq.ft. for containment of hot gas combustion products and hot oil from stir-fry. So the requirement is to be able (on high) to pull 7 x 90 = 630 CFM. To do this with typical pressure losses in baffles and ducts, a 900 CFM rated blower will likely be required, consistent with your plan. However, this assumes that the house interior pressure is not reduced (relative to outside) by more than a few hundredths of an inch of water column. Most code authorities now-a-days will be enforcing make-up air (MUA) above 400 CFM (rated). You will need either a large duct opening outside with damper and minimal filtering (perhaps dumping air into a mud-room or basement with a powerful enough heater, or a powered MUA system with filtering and heating, depending on environment. The latter alone will eat your budget. For the hood itself, one is best served by a commercial-hood-inspired configuration (often called "Pro") with a capture volume before the filtering and baffles for filtering. Ducting out the wall or up through an attic are both appropriate, but using a remote blower and intermediate silencer will yield a lower noise configuration if enough duct length is available. No matter which duct layout is chosen, capture volume and baffle filtering will preclude a thin under-cabinet hood. Bottom line, a kitchen ventilation system suitable for the specified range may not cost as much as the range, but will not be far behind if the residence is to be kept free of greasy wet cooking effluent and the hazards of dropping your house pressure are to be avoided.

I must have missed this thread. Just what effect is being assumed here such that the location of the blower is affected by the three 90-degree bends, so long as none are right at the blower. (Hint: Pressure loss capabilities of kitchen hood system blowers are minute factions of an atmosphere. Due to this, pressure losses on the blower intake side and pressure losses on the blower output side have the same effect, particularly when a 10-inch duct is to be used for a sub 1000 CFM requirement.) If one wants [relative] quiet in an open area. the blower should be remote from the hood and a silencer placed in the intermediate ducting. As widely noted here over the past decade or so, rated CFM and actual CFM differ by a significant factor, and one cannot address kitchen ventilation with only hood system parameters. The make-up air system parameters are equally important.

Hi,
I have the same problem. I decided it's not an issue. If I ever get around to backsplash tile, I can run it up the gap between SS backsplash and cabinet.

I filled the space between shelf and hood with these cast iron trivet-things:

And now that the countertops and stuff are in, I hardly notice the gaps:
