Any tricks to remove the parting bead?
Comments (12)"How do you/what do you use to "tear them out"? " Ti minimize any damage to the rest of the window a often just drive a sharpened old screwdriver into the side of them, then lever against some wood to protect the rest of the window frame. They sometimes come out in mostly one piece, but more often they simply break up. A cats paw, vise grips, and some wood to protect the rest of the window and you can pull nails one by one without damaging anything else. Clamp the vice grips on the nail, then pad the window and pry against the vice grips to pull the nail. Not damaging anything else is the goal....See MoreReplacing panes of glass without removing sash
Comments (13)Just pull the sashes; you need to do that anyway to put in the primary sash weatherstripping since you're planning on installing airtight storms. I don't know if you have pulleys (which complicate the process). You only have to take off one side of the interior jamb trim and a parting bead. Be patient and you can get the trim off with very little risk of breakage. Parting beads are a bit trickier because they smaller, but in some ways they are intended as sacrificial elements. I get about 75% out intact. You can see where someone prior to 1880 removed my original sashes and substituted the current two over twos. There are a few broken, but reinstalled, parting beads and little discrete prying marks on every window. Glazing on the flat, or on a slated easel, is so much easier than trying to do it in situ. You'd be able to get the compound out and replaced with a proper back bedding very easily. HTH, L....See MoreSash replacement - historic windows
Comments (9)Right. Thanks. klem1, I wasn't asking if manufacturers still made wood windows. I know they do. I was asking if there were known companies that made wood sash. I can easily just reinstall the pullies, re-attach the weights and have nearly restored the orginal windows, which would be preferable to replacing the windows. I was wondering if there was a source for wood sash that was widely available and if so, could those names/sources be passed along. If I struck out with initial steps, my next step would be to contact a local custom millworks here in RI/MA to make something from scratch. Thanks current resident, I might just have to have a couple sash made from cedar or mahogany....See MoreRepair of glass integrated into wooden window sash
Comments (3)Willaim Tell The sash is actually built around the glass. There are pins in the corner (under some filler) holding the mortise and tenon joints together. These need to be dug out and removed. If insulated glass it is actually a 3/8" bulb type welded glass and you cannot get that any longer. You would need a 3/8" insulated unit and need to rabbit out the sash channels where the glass sits to accept the square corners of the new IGU....See Moregraywings123
