Stain my cabinets light blue? or do White on white on white?
Comments (18)Regrettably, that is not my kitchen. It is one whose colors I tried to replicate, with results so bad (this is how I know how wrong colored stains can turn out) that I had to go another direction completely . The kitchen is by Timeless Kitchen Design. They have a web site and a blog, and even a proprietor -- Kevin Ritter -- who may be able to identify the hardware. For anyone who might yearn to have one of his wonderful kitchens, forum member honeychurch has posted here and on a blog about her experience. The irony is that the photo that so won my heart is actually somewhat distorted from the original, which is slightly warmer in its coloring. Comments (5)It depends on why you don't like the golden oak. If it is just the color, then a white stain might do the trick (I don't see how this is much different than pickling, though...). If you don't like seeing the swirly grain, then the white stain is not the way to go. Like the pp says, the grain will still show through. White stained oak cabinets will not look like a Peacock kitchen; they will have more movement and (potentially) look more rustic/country. The door style will make a difference as well. They could certainly be beautiful! Just look at a sample first to make sure it fits your vision for the kitchen. You don't want to hear this [grin] but our old white cabinets were melamine (good-quality Euro) and there was no chipping at all after 20+ years. Our neighbors have a custom-built white kitchen and it does have dings and chips; it's probably about 5 years old now. I have no idea what kind of finish was used. Our new kitchen is also white and I went with Ikea thermofoil. No regrets at all and so far no marks on it (6 months with kids and counter-surfing dogs). In case you haven't seen it yet, I'll link the Design Around thread for working with golden oak. It has some great ideas if you want to save yourself the hassle/expense of painting or staining. None of them look like a Peacock kitchen -- but then I always think that a mid-toned wood never looks out of style, even though the oak species (plain sawn) has been used in enough entry-level houses that people don't seem to like it anymore. Comments (18)My house threw up orange oak and brass so I made the decision to paint mine. I didn't want super dark cabinets so that wasn't an option for me. I also didn't want white cabinets so I picked a soft gray (BM cumulus cloud) and then found a beautiful granite that had all the colors that matched in it. The process took me 4 months. I removed all the doors, wiped them clean, sanded them, wiped them again and again, two coats of primer and two coats of paint. I enjoyed the process though. I used Cabinet coat for primer and BM Advanced paint. Both are none oil based so easy clean up and no harsh smells. I wouldn't change a thing. They have held up fine. I'll post pics. Be sure to post pics too if you do anything :)...See MoreKitchen Cabinets: Stained darker VS. Painted white?

You have to look at them everyday. while they may look ok in the photos, perhaps you see more wear and damage than we do. The inspo pics above are gorgeous, but those cabs are a nice oak. has a different tone than your knotty pine. try the other small changes first and see how you like it. you could always install a beadboard backsplash, paint it, and see how you like it. For the record, I don't think a white tile will make your kitchen too bright. for the countertops, there are a few DIY options other than painting them that you can try. One is Ardex concrete. it's a skim coat you can do right over whats there. if you google it, many videos and pics will come up on how to do it. It's not that difficult. you can even tint it black so you get a similar dark charcoal looking counter. The other is to remove what you have and make your own wood countertops out of doug fir beams. Also how-to's online. These are just options for you to consider. I'm not saying any one is better than the other. painting the cabs. you don't have that many to do, so it can be done, if you follow the proper prep instructions. I won't get into here, but if you do decide to go that route, let me know as I have one of the best online tutorials I can give you. Again, I'm only offering you options. People come on here and say, 'do this" or 'my god don't paint those',,, It's your home. Do what makes you happy. here are a few knotty pine kitchens, some natural, some painted. with your black countertop, if you don't want to have white tile, do a natural slate in these black/rust colored tones. they'd be a perfect match. Paint the surrounding walls a light cream to keep things from getting too dark. I think black appliances look great w/pine this is a laminate top and a travertine splash. if you do want to paint the cabs, or even the walls, this color would look fine. natural, glass in a few of the uppers, new lighting and granite. the sage green is beautiful w/your floors. You could always do just the lower cabs in this color, or do the entire lot. white splash, walls and butcher block or lighter countertop, you'd have a beautiful kitchen. below, she did a beadboard backsplash w/some open shelving....See More- 14 years ago
