Refrigerator and Wall Oven too close? Any advice?

I am at the beginning stage of planning my kitchen. The way I have it now works fine for my family ( 4kids, 1 DH, 1 golden retriever and 1 bunny). I am planning to switch the refrigerator and wall oven. The refrigerator will be a KA counter depth french door and the wall oven will be a n Electrolux or KA single wall oven. Will the handle of the wall oven ding the refrigerator door? Here is my layout:

What I had to do was take a ruler to an appliance shop and just measure the swing of appliances. There are usually drawings on the manufacturer's website but there's nothing like playing with the appliance to be sure. I think you'll be much happier with them switched, but it's possible you'll have to use a bit of filler or select an oven without a handle.

I am going to the appliance store today. Is there a wall oven without a handle? ( in my price range) we shall see.

Thanks for the quick responses. The island is located behind the fridge/oven wall so I figured I could easily reach across the aisle for a landing space. I am glad to hear that heat should not be an problem but will look into the door opening issue. We are headed to a showroom today. Hopefully, there will be a similar configuration to check out. I was hoping to leave the snack center at the end of this cabinet run so that it is easily accessible to the kids and out of the way. Also, since the space is limited (27"), I was worried about the space between 2 large appliances being "cave like." I want to the counter to be useful for making sandwiches, toasting bread, etc. vs. being a clutter collector. Kate- I plan to post layout pictures again-got lots of my ideas from doing that a few months back. For some reason, photo bucket is not cooperating with me:)

In your situation, I'd go to a used appliance store where you can pick up range, fridge and DW for roughly $700-800 total (in my area). They won't be fancy but if it's a good used store that services/repairs the appliances prior to selling, they will work. The ones in our area give 90-day warranties. We've purchased several things there for rental properties and they have worked fine for years after purchase. Or take your chances on CL if it's active in your area. Or check out a Habitat Re-Store or local thrift shops. Personally, I favor the used appliance store route simply because of the warranty they offer. You can sell these when you remodel for probably close to what you paid for them so you're not losing any real money in the process. I would not purchase new appliances until you remodel and have the time to choose the ones that fit your new space best and you have had time to research features, brands, etc, to ensure you're getting the right appliance for you. New, quality appliances are too expensive to buy in a rush without a game plan, imho.

I was thinking along the same lines as nosoccermom but you would lose the 24" cabinet over the dw and you would move the microwave cabinet over at least 6". You will need a 6" cabinet to the side of the range. The granite will need to be cut. Option 2 is to get rid of the range and get a 24" cooktop and 24" oven to place under the cooktop. Did you confirm if you could still return the gas range? Option 3 is to get a 24" range, there are not a lot of options but there are a few. This and the option above, would eliminate cutting the granite and replacing the dw. These two options will probably run north of $1500. Both options would probably cost the same amount of money. With Option 2 and 3, you will be getting a smaller cooking appliance.

I'm considering the same lineup! I already purchased the refrigerator as our previous one died. I went with the Kitchenaid 5 door. I love the layout and the full depth. It has the filtration system and things are lasting much longer in it than the previous side by side that came with the house. I did have a problem at first. After the installation was complete, including removing all the doors to get it through our kitchen doorway and reinstalling them, the protective film was removed from the door fronts. There was significant patterning in the stainless! To be nice I told the store to just replace the problem doors, but this was a bad mistake. The computer is in the door and it never linked properly to the icemaker. We had water dripping inside daily. After many trips out from warranty repair, KitchenAid replaced the unit. I've never had a problem with the new one at all. Moral of the story: don't try to be nice! What has drawn you to the Wolf or Miele wall oven? I'm fairly short and am considering a side swing door or french door. I don't want the menu driven controls of some. I am also wondering if I really need the 30 inch rather than a 27 inch with this huge 36 in gas oven. Interested in hearing your process to decide.

Well maybe not without a handle altogether, but some (like Bosch) have smaller handles.

I went to the appliance store and measured the swing of the door. Fortunately, the door did not swing all the way over and there was a stop. Good News - it won't hit the oven door as long as there is a minimum of three inches between them. Yeah!

It doesn't look like there are 3 inches between them in the drawing/photos.

I'm curious because we're also getting a KA french door fridge with the electrolux oven and they're right next to each other just like your picture. I never even though of door dings on the fridge

pbadss and LRy511 please follow up about your door swing situation. I too have ordere the KA french door (counter depth) and an Electrolux wall oven which will be right next to it on the right. I'll be ordering cabinets soon, have already bought appliances. Now I'm nervous about the oven door dinging the fridge and having a hot oven next to the fridge, which my KA put in the design

Hi dcognac,

I discussed the refrigerator and wall oven concern with my KD. He said he has worked with this before and there is enough space between the two appliances where they wont meet. They started tearing out my old kitchen today:). I will let you know how it goes. LRY
