I am not understanding your question, I guess. Do you want the drawers in the end of the island facing the lower table? Is there nothing in the higher part of the island where the drawers would be?

My island (32''H x 30''Wx 110''L) has a 36'' table at one end. There is an inset drawer in the apron of the table on the long side. It will pull through and open on both sides. I plan to keep my laptop in the drawer. The bottom of the apron is at 26''. Maybe this helps.

Won't you have drawers on the other side of the island in the same space? Drawers on the working side would be accessible all the time instead of just when there's nothing in front of them on the seating side.

yes, they would be on the side where we sit. The guys know the correct termonology but I don't and I'm trying to make life easier for all of us by doing the planning myself so all they have to do is buid (I also help wit that). The island is 51 X 76. The seating is along the 76 " side and then to an angle. I have three cooking modlues on the 51" end and a small sink and built in oven on the long side. No, there is nothing in the higher part of the island - just wasted space. One drawer could be 25" deep and 18" wide. And the other is on the angle so that one would be about 12" deep and 20 wide. I'd post a picture but I don't have a photoshop account and don't know how.

Wonder how long a reach to open the drawers. Would the drawer need to be pulled all the way out to the end to reach inside? Do you have long arms??

Datura-07...Go to Photobucket.com and click "Join Now". It will walk you through the sign up process. It's really quite easy.

1. Register for a PhotoBucket account

2. Take a digital picture

3. Download the picture from your camera to your computer (camera should have its own software for that)

4. Upload it to PhotoBucket (click the "Choose files" box once logged into PhotoBucket)

5. Post the picture here (use the "HTML Code" box)

This may seem obvious- but did you try to turn off your computer and start again? One night I had problems with Photobucket, and DH figured there just must be a glitch in its software. I kept getting the wrong photo posted...anyhow just a thought.

Datura, instead of a drawer per say (sp?), could you have a flip top with pullout shelf, or just a flip top if you were going to store long items in there? Do you know what you might fit in there? I'm thinking if you play games, maybe long board game boxes could slide in with just a flip up drawer front, then you're not wasting any of that precious room with the bottom and sides of a drawer. (The 'box' could be built to the opening's dimensions )

I took a couple pictures and have a few minutes before I need to report for duty on the cabnets so I will try to register for Photobucket.

If you hover the cursor over the picture you want the html box will show up below the picture. I don't know why they changed it to be like this - took me a while to figure it out too.

My son just told me that I can't have the drawers. He said "It's not the boat where you need every spare inch of space". But I'd still like to know if it is possible. I'm trying to e-mailed the pictures but they still are trying to attach to the e-mail. We have satellite internet and it is so slow most of the time. Maybe you will get a chance to see what I'm talking about if it ever goes thru.

All...there's an option in PhotoBucket for the codes to appear/not appear...

1. Login to PhotoBucket

2. Click on the "Account Options" link at the top right of the page

   A page labeled "Account Options for [username]" will appear (In my case, it says "Account Options for Buehl")

3. Scroll down to "Album Settings"

4. Click on the "Link Options" link under the "Images Link Back To Album" label

   A popup window will appear

5. At the bottom of the popup window, you will see:
   Show links in my albums: o always o only on mouseoverClick the radio button for the option you want
   ("always" means you will always see the links when you're in your album; "only on mouseover" means you will only see them when you hover over a picture)

6. You may also choose which links to show by default:

   Note 1: Items in bold are the options I have set)

I typed three messages last night and they said they were posted but nothing here. Not only is my internet slow but all night it wouldn't work because it's so cold outside. We wrap a towel around it and that helps a little. I tried to send pictures to both Buehl and raehelen but it just won't download them to my e-mail. I'll keep trying.

I agree, I wouldn't want to waste that space b/w the back of the cooktop cabinet & the beginning of the table-height counter!

I think I would make them flush (like inset) unless you can increase the depth of the overhang. BTW...the NKBA recommended depth of an overhang at table-height is 18". If you have an 18" overhang, I think you could make the drawers overlay. Try for frameless, though, to increase the usable width.

Now seeing your layout and a picture, I get what you ahve been talking about. And I wouldn't want to waste that much space either!

If it were me, I would do flip-up drawer fronts and a roll-out, as someone else suggested. I would keep the roll-out shallow so that I could grab frequently used items without even pulling it out: napkin basket, salt & pepper, pens and paper, maybe even your laptop! You could put a plug in one of them for a charging station, too!

We also have used 'game' style dining chairs on wheels for years and my husband refuses to give them up. They are so comfy for long after-dinner conversations, playing games, working on projects, etc. Guess it's function before form for us, because I would like to update our look but would miss them.

Good job getting the picture to finally show up! Post a couple more so that you can practice! : )
