I have two large prints over our bed.

We have Maxfield Parrish prints in our bedroom.

Not actually over the bed though, because DH thinks they will fall on our heads.

Sadly everything is stacked and leaning against walls until I decide.

I have an architectural piece over our bed. I may change to an antique leather screen if I ever find one in decent shape with a decent price tag. I have a landscape painting over a dresser (not shown in link below so I'll post), and European architectural etchings (a grouping of four near bed and two larger ones over sofa). There is a set of three etchings near the sofa as well.

In another bedroom, there are three girl dresses worn for one year portraits by myself, my sister and DD2. A third bedroom has a leaded glass window (door side light turn horizontal) and a fourth bedroom has nothing over the bed, but plenty going on either side of bed.

I don't have a picture of our bedroom, but this is the painting we bought a few months ago. I always felt that it was too "splurgey" to hang real art in our bedroom, since no one sees it but us, but we HAD to have this painting and our bedroom was the most logical place. It's framed in a nice wide black wood frame, and our headboard is black iron. Our walls are blue-gray. This photo doesn't do the painting justice; the colors are amazing.

Don't think everything you purchase has to be "out" where others see it. You need to buy for you and use wherever - and enjoy each and every time you see it! Why does it matter if no one else ever will!?

I have antique etchings in the MBath. No one sees them but us.

In my link, the lead glass side light hanging over the Shabby Chic bed was upstairs in the MB of our last home. I could see it in the mirror while I dried my hair each morning. I love it all over again every time I see it. When a friend went upstairs to see what I had done lately (at least she asked first), she said "why do you have it here where no one else can see it?" Well, I didn't buy it for everyone else, I bought it for me. ;D

fwiw, hardly anyone goes to our lower level but us and visiting grown children. Would I not decorate it just as nice as the main level? No. All the finishes are the same as the main level (which really belongs on the "builder's grade" thread, but...)

We enjoy these above the bed; have our large art elsewhere since DH, as boopadaboo said, is concerned a large piece might fall on our heads. I agree with posters above who say they furnish their private rooms to be as enjoyable as public rooms; as much as you can, make your house a place that will make you happy every day. (And please ignore the lamps, etc., in our MB; we're in the process of rearranging.)

Good idea susanka. I would love to find something like those that would work with the Maxfield parrish prints we have in the rest of the room.

Completely agree with Allison's comment about hanging art where you will enjoy it, and not "saving it" for public areas. Why are we all too often hesitant to put out the best stuff for ourselves, and only for ourselves? That's a gorgeous painting, sueb20. I'd love to know who the artist is as well.

We have a quilt hanging over our bed. I can't stand the thought of heavy objects hanging overhead either ... it just unsettles me psychologically somehow!

I'm in agreement with Allison and Jen. I don't "save" art for public areas. I don't buy anything just to fill a space on the wall.

Our headboard is decorative and tall, so nothing behind the bed. On the other walls I have 3 pieces of original art ... a pastel, and two oils.

In my mind there is little difference between bedroom art and public spaces art so one could have whatever one likes there. Altho I suppose some art that is appropriate for private spaces may not be for public ones but that's not what you are asking.

I have chosen to have floral girly art in my bedroom just because I like it and it wouldn't work color-wise in my public rooms. Over my tall headboard I have a long narrow chalkboard which DH made from a buffet mirror frame. I've written "Always kiss me goodnight" on it. I don't worry about it falling because the hangers are securely placed in the wall studs and we don't have earthquakes here. If it ever falls I'll know my time is up! Heavy thing. LOL

I break all the "rules" here. One wall is 5x7's of my three kids from 6 mos to 6th grade. I have our wedding picture on another wall and over our bed I have the memory quilt all our family and friends made us as wedding gift. It isn't elegant, it isn't fancy, it isn't "our retreat". It is our bedroom and it fits us to a T.

boopadaboo, I see his reason for concern. I love your iron piece, but in addition to being heavy, it has spear-like points around the edge. My DH would be making jokes about checking the insurance policy if I put it over the bed.

We also have Maxfield Parrish prints, but don't happen to have them in the bedroom. These 9-square pieces were everywhere a couple of years ago; you might find something you like by googling, although I tried googling "canvas art 9 squares" and didn't find much that I thought might harmonize with Maxfield Parrish. I don't pay a lot of attention to that though unless pieces are on adjoining walls.

We love our wrought iron headboard and didn't want anything that would distract from it, so I've hung a cross over our bed. But, as Natal and others have mentioned, I don't buy art to just fill a space; I buy what I love and have a number of (IMO) beautiful pieces hung in our MBR.

This painting is one of my favs and hangs opposite the bed so that I can see it more. I've since moved the statue on the hearth and the framed photos on th mantel, to declutter the area more:

Someone mentioned not buying art to fill a space. Sometimes we do that, but in this case, we were shopping for art to fill a different space! We ended up coming home with this painting to "try" and almost couldn't find a spot for it because I was looking only in the public rooms. We had a not-special print hanging over our bed and when I replace it with this painting, I suddenly liked our room a lot better than I had before. It's also meaningful to us because it is a view from an area of Italy that we visited last year.

I love flowers and people pictures. Mine is girly because I wanted
soft and the awwwwww factor in my restful area.

Allison - I said almost the exact same thing on a recent post - I believe it was on one of Shee's bedroom posts. Most people spend a good bit of time in a bedroom. It should be decorated for those who live there. I feel that way about our whole home - I decorate for us - not for others. Although it is nice to have someone admire your home, and I do hope it feels welcoming and cozy - other than that, I really don't care what others think about our decorating choices.

To the OP - nothing over our bed at the time - I have everything off the walls in the master bed and bath - painting soon. I had two prints over the bed, but am taking those down. I like other types of art usually more so than prints, but haven't found the right thing for over the bed just yet. I'll know it when I see it!

Tina, since it's on my mind ... just wondering why you never share pics of your living space. I don't think I'm alone in saying I'd love to see what you often describe with words.

I have the Utttermost Cyrus mirror over the bed, and 9 framed Morris egg and nest prints on the wall next to the bed. Most of the art I have in the house are antique nature prints.

Thank you everyone for sharing. Natal, I love that nude (well, semi-nude). I found an impressionist style print of a European cityscape that I liked, but it wasn't framed, and I think after framing it'd be too big for our room.

I also have a metal leaf sculpture I like. I had it over the mantel in the LR, but moved it for the holidays to our bedroom. I liked it, but it seemed too much with the headboard.

Lil Home, I have some art like you have on your bed. Only I have it in black and seal point.

Well, now at least, I feel like I can hang any art in there. I will just have to go hunt for something! I found an adorable watercolor of a bunny on Etsy. I'm leaning toward that, it's DH nickname, and we have kissing bunny figurines in our room. VERY kitschy, but it's our private space and it means something to us.

When we repainted and got a new bed I took down what worked over the old bed and put new pics over the nightstands. Here is ours.......bonnie Good luck with your bedroom art!

I bought some lovely photograph closeups of flowers that I plan on matting in white, framing in black or chrome, and hanging over our bed. I am stenciling a wall pattern on the 2 side walls and wanted to keep it simple over our bed since our head board is wrought iron and fancy enough.

Thank you Marthaelena! The little table on the side of the bed with the black basket under it with plant is from Bombay.......bought about 10 yrs. ago. I used it in the foyer of our previous home but it fit nicely in the bedroom here. The other end table is from the furniture collection that matches the bed, armoire and chest of drawers. It is called the Jaclyn Smith Collection. I think this particular group is discontinued but maybe not. It is By Largo and is Georgian Meadows collection We bought it about 4 yrs ago. Hope this helps ! I wish Bombay would open back up.......I miss them. :( Bonnie
