Speaking of pets being buried in the back yard

The people we bought our 'new' house from had a LOT of dogs (8, I think). I presume that they may have had others over the 2 decades they lived here. We've found some piles of rocks, carefully positioned here and there in the back yard. The old owners now live next door.

I'm curious--but more than that, I don't want to be gardening and dig up any unpleasant surprises.

Would you ask them if they'd buried any of their pets in the yard? I'm okay with it if they have, but would just like to know what areas to avoid digging. So is that a gross or inappropriate question? or do you think they'd understand that I'm asking because I'd respect their pet's final resting place(s)?

Reminds me of a neighbor that bought a house close to us. When the people moved they dug up their dog and took him with them. They had buried him in a metal box.

I would ask. We always put all the animals in a specific spot, usually one that didn't grow grass well (this was GA with the red clay). That way we were never tempter to dig in the area.

Nancy, I have been to the Home and Garden Tour before and it is increadible. I can't go this weekend, I have a family funeral to attend otherwise I would have to be there. For 5 dollars it is a steal. I have always put my pump in some sort of container even if it is only a milk crate lined with window screen and filled with gravel, then wrap the pump with quilt batting to keep out the gravel. What does a pump casing look like? Some sort of metal box? I will see what I can find. Yes I have put misquito dunks in the "cesspool" even though there is lots of wildlife around it. When we get closer in the clean up and can get a water sample I am gonna have it tested to see if there is any way fish will survive. I might put in some goldies, we will see. For now misquito dunks will have to do. When we bought the place the grass was already hip high in the back 1 and 1/2 acres so we didn't see all the JUNK that was strewn around until we hired someone to brush hog it. I have vowed to hubby we will never buy another piece of property without it being mowed, especially since I am the lawn mower :) The man that brushhogged for us did the upper banks and the outer area but the pool itself is lined with trees and brush so thick we can't get to it (I can see tantalizing glimpses though). I am considering putting in a water hyacinth and some duckweed to get it started. I think to much hubby says. hahahahaha.

Hey, on 5/20/07 i was in my backyard enjoying the sun and i noticed that a hawk was circling over the backyard. I have an Italian Greyhound and he was strolling about so i thouht the hawk may have been looking at him. I kind of got nervous so i rushed over to him to try to catch him but he was having to much fun to come inside so he starts speeding around the yard playfully. As i'm trying to catch him i notice a still bird sitting in the open grass I study it for awhile and it hasn't blinked or moved at all, i gently touch its beak with the tip of my shoe to see if alive or dead because i often find dead birds but this one wasn't shredded. Once i touch its beak it opens and i relize the hawk was stalking the bird! I dig up a few worms clean them then let them soak in a little Gatorade for a minute and feed them to the bird. I look to see if the hawk is still around and it has perched itself on the neighboor's roof. The little bird being replenished starts to hop around so i think to myself it must be a fledgling. I let it hop around without any interaction and the parents start to react nerviously, thats when i discover it was a baby robin. As it hops closer to the neighboors fence i soon put together the pieces and the parents are panicking becuase the hawk is over there so i walk as calmly and fast as i can but i startle it and it goes under the large wood fence as the parent robins start to scream and squawk. I run to get a garbage can, a net, the stick part of a broken shovel, and duck tape. I now have a very long net and something to stand on to see over the fence. I swoop it in the net just in time and the hawk takes of from the closer part of the roof frustrated. Sure the parents are mad at me now but i couldn't just leave it there for the hawk to get it later. So i took it inside. That afternoon i put it in a Nike shoe box and went back to my other house in NYC. The next day i brought it to school to ask my math teacher what i should do because she has helped injured birds before, she upgraded its box to an office paper box. She recommened Exact hand feeding formula for baby birds and an eye dropper. A couple of days i bought a small hamster cage that fitted the robin well and then later i set out to find some worms. It is very hard to find wild worms in NYC but i did. As the bird got a little fatter we cleaned up the cage and switched it for a real bird cage. I let it out in my room whenever i'm not at school. It is happy as can be. I am currently trying to teach it how to eat on its own by gently pushing its beak into various fruits - I research what it should and shouldn't have. Tomorrow will make it a month that its been living with me. I do plan to give it the option of leaving, but thats after i teach it to eat without my assistance. It will peck and eat small insects that it finds on the patio in NJ. Well thats my story in great detail, hope i have some interesting comments to view in a few days. BTW it taught itself to walk in a hamster wheel which i took a short video of. (NOTE: It is no longer in the hamster cage) I'll post the link for anyone that would like to see. Carol, I know what you meant lol. Whoever wants to start the next one can. It would actually be fun if someone different started a thread every month. Kinda taking turns :D I don't always get on the forums every day but I try to pop in every few days even if its just from my phone which I hate to type on because my keyboard is messed up from a few too many drops. Texting not a problem on it just trying to write correctly for the forums lol. I hope you do post some photos next month (tomorrow :P) Rita, did you get any rain today? We just had a little today. Of course, it didn't do it until I was outside right in the middle of potting up a few things grrr. Is your firecracker plant hardy in zone 9a? I am thinking of getting a couple for the hummingbirds. I see them on the pineapple sage once in a while. Congrats on your Grand Duke. I have Maid of Orleans which smells similar. The sambac jasmines are all so nice smelling. I read that people in Asia feed the flower buds to their koi. I should try that. halfwaythere, I love your Queen's Wreath vine. That one is on my list to get. I will probably have to protect it here in the winter but it would be worth it. Yaaaayyy! One of my gladiolas started blooming today. It is a pretty fluffy pink. I will try to get some more photos of stuff tomorrow if its not raining.

Uncovered a large manmade "hole" in back yard!

Alright, y'all! We excavated it and I think we have an old septic tank on our hands. However, we think it pre-dates our house, which was built in the 40s. The pipe that fed the tank at one point comes from the opposite direction of our home, and we found what appears to be evidence of an old foundation further back on our property. Very cool! My husband hacked up the bottom and sides of it with an axe, and we filled it in with several cubic yards of sandy loam and large rocks, watering and tamping between each layer. This thing is solid now, and I'm glad that no one fell through the "roof," as it was composed completely of dirt and interwoven roots. The previous homeowner definitely knew about it, as a large paver was placed over the small hole that we initially discovered (eye roll). I'll attach photos and you guys can tell us if you think it's a cistern or septic tank. I love this thread, by the way! Thanks for everyone's help!

I think I'd ask them. You could just ask if those little mounds of stones mark anything significant and that you wouldn't want to disturb a final resting spot. I can't imagine any other reason for a little rock pile. We've only buried snakes, birds and hamsters in our yard and they've probably decomposed by now.

I'd ask them. I had several dogs buried in my backyard, close to the fences and when we moved, I told the new owners. No way was I going to dig up 10 year old bones, but I wanted them to be aware.

My dog, Remy, B.H. (before Henry) is buried in my backyard, in among the rose trees that came from my grandmother's garden in Harbour Grace. We had her cremated and we buried the box , with a laminated picture of her and her name, taped to the top. I planted a small hosta, Remember Me, on top of the spot where she is buried. OK, now I'm going to cry!

Our BeeGee's earthly cremains are waiting in a little urn on the back shelf of the bedroom armoire for the rest of us to join her.

As we each make our journey, our urns be added to the shelf. The last person standing makes the arrangements.

My gracious...typing it out sounds so "morbid," LOL. But I'm not going without Harry with me.

We are on 2.5 acres and have our two previous dogs buried in a far corner with markers. It is far away from the house so don't think anyone would want to plant anything there. But just in case we made the markers.

Thanks for the responses. Think one of these days, I'll ask, being very careful to let her know I'm okay with it if there are a few graves back there.

I would ask, why not?

Our first dog Mariah Valentine is buried outside our bedroom window. No one will ever wonder, though, because her grave is marked with an engraved stone that weighs about 90 pounds and has a small heart shaped stone on top of that. It has her name, the years she was born and died and it says "The Bestest Dog" (in the whole wide world- there wasn't room for all that) on it. We had some people over once that assumed that that stone was there before we moved here because they were just sure that we knew "bestest" wasn't a real word. Well, we did know that but she WAS the bestest dog in the whole, wide world and we told her so every single day of her life. :) I guess we're perpetuating the myth of Arkansans forever. lololol

2 cats are buried next to Mariah and there is a cat statuary marking that spot. I need to get engraved stones for Tess and Roughy.

I would ask.I wouldn't want to accidentally dig up any bones.
I have 5 dogs buried outside my back fence.They are all little dogs and have markers on their graves and if I ever leave here will probably stay buried.
DD buried her little Chi at the house where they were renting when she died.When she moved she dug her up (her DH had made a nice wood box for her) and moved her to a spot down by the pond.Last year it rained a lot and the pond level got dangerously close to the grave so she moved her to higher ground.LOL They are renting and plan to buy a house within the next couple of years and she will move her again at that time.

Uh, Oh, I always wonder what the people on North Union in Ponca City will do, when they find a human leg. Yup, leg. When my father in law (as a young man) lost his leg, it got buried in the back yard.

Should be quite interesting...

A friend of mine used to bury her cats near the fence of her garden. One year when we visited, there was a skull on her mantle. "I think that was Killer," she said.

Ummm, it is TOO a word--for beloved dogs. (and beloved other things)

We would never bury our cats in the backyard. First, it's illegal here and second, I couldn't bear to leave them behind. We have had them all cremated and I can take them with me wherever we go.

Yes, ask the previous owners.

I wonder if anyone ever puzzled over a purple plush perfume box found under a small rock at our old house -- that would be the one with the remains of 'Flash', our DS's goldfish.

When my DS was working for a pool company, they came accross human remains while digging. All work had to be stopped until the police were through with their investigations.
I still know people that have family buried on their property.
I would want to be asked if my animals were buried nearby. So yes, I would ask them.

I'd ask too. I think that if the previous owners buried pets there, they would appreciate the fact that you didn't want to disturb their resting place.

I think it's so sweet that you're being so sensitive and caring...and I think your previous owners will to...

Like Tally...that's why we have our animals cremated now...We had to leave our first doggies behind when we moved...and it really bothered me but I wasn't digging up bones...now I have two in pretty boxes with their pictures on them...

maybe they are piles of rocks they pickedraked up from their gardening, and never got around to picking up? It really could be something as innocent as that. Go ahead and ask, or......find out the hard way! LoL
