Help me sort this out - flooring decision

I'm trying to decide between 3/4" solid hardwood or vinyl planks.

The answer seems obvious, right? But hear me out..

We have 6 kids, the oldest being 8.. they are HARD on floors! We had hardwood in our last house and it looked pretty bad after 2 years of walkers, toys, spills, ect..

To put hardwood in the kitchen and dining room will cost 2500-3000 roughly. For vinyl plank it would be 700 max. The hardwood will probably look bad after a few years of abuse where as the vinyl plank may hold up 5 years or more. (Correct me if my figures are off!)

Now, I know I can refinish the hardwood where as the vinyl would have to be replaced. But the cost of refinishing will probably be close to what the vinyl plank would be to begin with.

Dh says get the hardwood now. My thought is to put in vinyl plank now and replace them when needed with hardwood. By that time the kids will be older and not as hard on everything.

Wwyd?
