Frozen cookie dough exchange

The soup thread made me think of my soup exchange I did last winter. I've been thinking about a frozen cookie dough exchange. I have never had or been to one but I like the concept.

I'm just brainstorming right now and would like your input. I realize that many may want the cookies for Christmas but personally I like the idea of having a variety of ready to go cookies in the freezer. You can put them in the oven anytime you have company coming or just need a cookie fix.

Thinks to ponder.....how long can most cookie dough be frozen? If you were attending when/what month would you want it in? would you want the focus on Christmas type cookies or any type? Any other ideas or thoughts are appreciated.

I like all types, not just Christmas kinds of cookies and I like the "frozen dough" concept better than having to deal with all those cookies already baked.

I start making cookie dough right after Halloween and bake it off for Christmas, so it keeps well that long. However, I found a dozen frozen molasses cookie dough balls left from last year and baked them recently and they were fine, so they'd been in the freezer for at least 9 months.

dcarch, do I get the answers? Annie, maybe you should have cooking classes at your house. I had a hard time finding people. Most people I know said they have never made soup and just use canned. Others were worried their soup wasn't good enough. Now that I've done this once those who attended can help spread the word. Glad you like the frozen cookie idea. I like to make chocolate chip dough and freeze it in cookie sized balls. I don't know how many other types of cookies could be frozen like that. So thinking....that each person could bring perhaps a dozen or more "cookies" for each person. Then you would go home with lets say a dozen of 5 different types of unbaked frozen cookies. I love to be able to just pop some from the freezer into the oven when cookies are needed. Any other thoughts on this idea?

Here you go Claire. Home Cookin Chapter: Recipes From Thibeault's Table Shire House Cream Cheese Pie ============================ have had this recipe for 30 years. It was given to me by the owners of the Shire House Restaurant which was just outside of Grand Rapids, Michigan The restaurant has been gone for many years. The original recipe calls for poached pears but I have used strawberries as well as peaches and apricots and you could use blueberries or blackberries. 1 8 oz cream cheese 1 cup whipping cream 1 French Pie Crust (Pate Sucree) Honey sugar vanilla 6 poached pear halves (substitute other fruit) orange liqueur Apricot Preserves Poach Pears or apricots in 1 cup sugar to 2 cups water with 1 tablespoon of lemon added. Cook until tender and cool. Prepare and bake pie crust. Cool Whip cream cheese with 3 to 5 tablespoons of honey (to taste). Whip cream with sugar (again to taste) Add vanilla. Fold cream into cheese and add to cold pie crust. Decorate with pears and brush with orange liqueur.

I just read a FAQ at Land O'Lakes (butter) on this subject, and I agreed with them. I'm a food safety "freak". "Most cookie dough can be refrigerated or frozen. Place dough in airtight containers. Store in the refrigerator up to 2 days, or freeze up to 3 months. Thaw the dough in the refrigerator until it's just soft enough to use. To have future batches of cookies ready in minutes, drop dough on cookie sheet and freeze until firm. Remove dough from cookie sheets and place in resealable, plastic freezer bags. To bake, place frozen mounds of cookie dough on cookie sheet and follow recipe directions. Baking time may need to be increased. " BTW, if you have anyone inclined to eat raw (unbaked) cookie dough containing eggs, be sure to use powdered eggs, Egg Beaters, or other pasteurized egg products to prevent egg-related bacteria. Personally, I'll make the cookie dough and form the dough balls and freeze them as I have time, then bake later when needed. -Grainlady

Liz, I've frozen molasses, sugar cookies, chocolate chip, peanut butter. I've frozen the fig cucciadati, but I freeze the dough and filling separately and then put it together when I'm ready to bake. I've frozen fudge drops and oatmeal raisin too.

The only time I've had a problem is when freezing something that contains bits of fruit, like apple, sometimes that gets watery and changes the dough consistency.

I do always thaw the dough before baking.

Thanks, Annie! That's good to know. In the past the cookies have never been around long enough to freeze, but sounds good for holiday baking.

Several years ago, when SIL got her KA stand mixer... she was RAVING about it. FORCED me to take it home Thanksgiving Day to try out... with strict orders to return the followiing weekend. My first thought was... I don't bake that often but do like to make a variety of holiday cookies, so what the heck!?!

By the time I get to the end of November, "room temp" butter (left on counter for SEVERAL hours) is BARELY getting soft. The KA made easy work of putting together double batches of chocolate chips, peanut butter, oatmeal, and a few other cookie doughs... with no upper body or arm/hand power needed at all. Had at least 5 batches of dough that I just put in zip bags and into freezer for later. Pulled them out a day or 2 before I planned to bake and just scooped onto parchment.

That year I gifted SELF a KA! Since then have modified prep methods a bit. Most doughs get rolled into fat logs, wrapped well, then into freezer. That way can be a scoopless, cut/bake cookie.

Good to know frozen cookie dough will last a while. Rolled into logs is a great idea.
