Thank you Chase -- ( I think )

My 7-8 wk waiting period for Chase's Dills is finally over and we officially opened a jar Tues evening--- best darn dill I ever ate !!

And now I'm getting grief from Hubby 'cause I only put up 8 qts-- so I'm not sure if I should Thank You , Sharon, or

grumble about the marital discord you've caused -- plus I had to wheedle, beg and wrestle to get one of the 2 qts Hubby was trying to walk out with this morning

-- he had the unmitigated gall to think he was going to take them to camp with him for the long work weekend-- for 8 of his buddies.

Anyway -- if you haven't tried Sharon's recipe yet you're missing a great pickle !

Saturday is only 5 weeks......don't know if I'm gonna make it......................................................................................................................................................

On the "up" side.......I've got 17 quarts. Talk about a leap of faith, huh? Never made them before and I put up 17 quarts.

Our 8 wks was up last week and we're into our 3rd qt already. I was going to make 5 qts but ended up making 11 but I doubt they will last until the 1st of the year.

Chase warned me to make more, but I did not listen.

Next year I am making more, maybe 20 qts, of Chase's Dills and then I want to try fermented dills as well.

Whiteforest, yes, live-heading is taking the blooms off in the evening as opposed to waiting to the next day. Always glad for a convert! Yes, I have live-headed for years. IMHO, there are several advantages - first, if you like to photograph your garden, you have a clean palate each morning, which is the best time for garden photography. No dealing with those slimy spent blooms with purple juice.Ugh! Secondly, live heading helps to control earwigs, as they like to feast on the spent blooms. Finally, live heading is much cleaner. I really hate dealing with the purple slime, and how some blooms have the oooie-gooies that keep other blooms from opening. If you live-head, you can always save a few favorite blooms to take inside and enjoy for the rest of the evening. I do that frequently! However, to each his or her own! Live-heading is just my preference. .

You may want to hold back on the coffee grounds. Figs prefer a more base condition and the coffee is too acidic (the acidity is water soluble so the used grounds tend to be neutral). Also, coffee grounds add nitrogen (N in NPK) to the soil which encourages foliage growth. Phosphorus (P in NPK) is aids in (among other things) fruit production. It is possible (at least without knowing the age of your tree) that it wasn't ready to produce figs, and it wasn't a function of (or totally because) of over feeding. Yes, GE Cafe matches much better, but having compared them side by side, the Samsung is much nicer and seems sturdier. Gets much better reviews as well. Samsung is at least a closer look than the Kitchen Aid fridge I first looked at. . . As for Bosch, I like the size of KA better, gets solid reviews, liked it in the store, and use one now that is terrific. Thanks!

Dear Huggybear, you got an unbelievable deal! Yes for those kinds of tile, you need the Lepponits wheeled nippers. You can order them online from tile companies such as Mosaic Mercantile or Maryland Mosaics, or you can get them on eBay, or you can probably get them at local stained glass stores. The wheeled nippers are great; with them you can position your wheels in the center of the tile and make a clean straight cut almost every time. (With the ones that look like pliers, you have to position them at the edge of the tile and they will crush the glass tiles like you have - use them only for thick ceramic tile like the 4x4s that are used on bathroom walls, for instance.) Again, what a fabulous deal you got on those tiles! Make wonderful things! Post pics!

You are all too kind.....but glad you enjoy them. I never make less than 50 jars. We eat lots and I give lots away.

I have to be honest and say that I'm not sure the eight weeks is necessary. I just do what Elaine told me to do 30 years ago ( ouch!) and I never vary. We always made them the first or second week of August and she told me they could not be opened until Thanksgiving....which is early October in Canada.

Many have said they opened them earlier and they were great...but...not me man!

I did 12 qts last year and 24 this year. I had posted asking about doing spears, then got cold feet in case they didn't turn out as well as the whole cukes, so I only did 2 qts of spears. We have another 5 weeks to go, but I see that one of my daughters has marked on the calendar 5 weeks from now "Pickle Day - Yay!" I think they are looking forward to them!

One of these days I'm going to get around to making Sharon's dills. The two men in my life would be extremely happy since they think that Sharon's dills are the best by far.

good for you diane, and congratulations chase! it seems that every once in awhile someone posts a recipe here that becomes sort of a classic/forum favorite. from the sounds of it, this is one of them.

Yeah! Somebody should start a Forum Cookbook.
Take a vote and when it gets a certain number, it 'makes the book'!!

Two or three more weeks for me for the first batch. I'v done 32 quarts so far and will do one more round in the next week or two. I can't wait and my nephew is driving me crazy! I've manage to keep him somewhat happy with Olga's refrigerator dills. You are still the "pickle lady from Canada" in his mind and it's been several years since that swap.

Well, I'm sure not going to admit that I've eaten them before the 8 weeks is up. (grin) I can state pretty definitively that they are imminently edible at about 5 weeks, not that I'd know. Ahem.

I made mine into spears and they were just fine, I have a couple of jars left in the basement, I think I'll save them for the Michigan Run!

Five weeks, eh? Hot D_ _ M!! I just passed the 5-week mark!

We're havin' big fat ham sandwiches with tomato and chard for dinner tonight..........Maybe we'll 'de-flower' a jar of those dills.................

But I'm NOT sayin' we will........

Definitely a keeper!!
Mine were made with larger cukes than I would normally use and they are still crisp! And that was warm, off the shelf!
I can't wait to try them today after refrigerating...
