ceramic top stove/cover for more counter space

I have a small kitchen, although a good size for my needs and plenty of room for 3 or 4 people hanging around.

When the kids come home we all end up jammed into the corner counter area. Why we continue to do this eludes me. There is working counter available on two sides of the stove and sink.

I've moved counter items around to direct working there, elbowed them into the end counters, verbally reminded all there is more room available.....but we still end up hugging together in the corner.

Most of our cooking when they are home is barbeque or oven, so the stove top isn't used a bunch.

I was thinking about using the ceramic stove top area to expand our cooking events. Something like a butcher block big enough to expand over the stove top. Adding small bunn feet for sitting on the counters so the butcher block doesn't touch the stove. Having to move this to use the stove isn't the greatest idea, but sure would give me more counter space.

This idea may not even solve the issue with our kitchen corner family time. Sometimes I have to giggle thinking about the reasons this continues.

Has anyone done this? Not the corner family thing, although it would be interesting to know my family isn't wierd or alone doing it. Is there an existing cover which would allow the use of a ceramic stove top space?

Well I haven't covered my stove but I'm wondering about safety of it being accidentally turned on. If that's not a concern then maybe it would work. I can defineitly see the benefit.

I *have* done the other - corwding into one part of the kitchen. EVery night making supper all 3 of us end up in the same corner. We're hoping to design that out of our new kitchen but for now it's just a part of how our kitchen works.

We have a 1916 home; just a few remarks re our own experience: 1) Are you sure the entire floor is concrete? We have a concrete slab just where the stove was. It is visible from the (unfinished) basement. (The rest is wood subfloor.) 2) When we moved in, the kitchen floor was green linoleum and the small countertop was the same, held in place with metal edging. Don't know how long that it been there, but long. (I think it was real linoleum, but not sure. But it wasn't pretty!) 3) We very much respect our house's character and try to maintain it. But we don't live in a museum. When we expanded/remodeled we matched the mouldings, windows, etc, but felt no compulsion to match every kitchen detail. We put down a "standard" oak floor similar to that in the rest of the house, and used a medium-light, marble-like, greenish granite (with white cabs). It seems completely in sync with the house, even though it is not period. Unless you plan on getting 1919 appliances, you're not going to have a 1919 kitchen no matter what you do. Don't feel compelled to do anything you don't really like, just to be "authentic." P.S. Don't get too hung up on the home's specific style. Fact is, most houses from that period -- like ours -- are a mishmosh of styles, and simply reflect what was currently popular. (As remains the case with most new homes today, though I would say to less pleasing effect!)

I would get a narrow kitchen cart to act as extra storage and counter between the stove and the doorway -- you should be able to get one that's 12 inches or so and fits right in there. Then move the trash. Alternatively, a narrow table of the same height, and keep the trash underneath. Heatheron40, very nice. I asked a question about doing a tile countertop in our guest cabin recently as I feel like the look would complement the cabin aesthetic. Also I’m dying to learn to tile and thought it would be a fun place to start as it’s not an everyday space and I could take my time. Most of the responses were against. Basically stating the grout would make me crazy. The guy at the said what you’re saying I think, he said that modern grouts are more resistant to staining and such, and also to go with a tinted grout of some sort. I love your use of pattern to give it interest and intention!

I'd go w a slate look vinyl tile. and the middle choice of the formica in row of five. A mini trac lite above sink and serpentine one in center of kitchen will assist w lighting . Then the slate look floor will ground the space/not be so dark and help the oak go for another lease on life as per your decision.... [ consider swap of some uppers for glass doors] . Not sure about beige sand cream floor tones...just get a slate look /classic/ hard to beat.

I use my induction cooktop as a work surface. I could put something like butcherblock over it to protect it but I plan to replace it anyway (and it seems like I can't damage the dang thing anyway). It's well lit and onion smells can be ventilated.

Anyway, using the stovetop as a work area is very nice if it can be done safely because the HOOD makes for a great chopping spot.

I have an induction cooktop and just asked customcuttingboards for an estimate to make me a top for my 21 x 36 cooktop. We entertain quite a bit where guests all bring pu pus. So, I don't need the cooktop but I do need the space for pu pus and drinks,etc. I will let you know the price when they respond to my request. If the bid is too high, I will just find or make a 22 x 37 cutting board and put little legs on it : ) Which is what we did with our previous electric element cooktop.

I suppose, if you have gas or electic elements and kids, you might be concerned about putting wood on top of it. However, there are clear substances (clear intumescent) you can paint on to make it fire resistant. I don't think you would want to use it as a cutting board if you treated the wood.
