Depends on the store, but it can be held at room temp. I think it is just a ploy by the market to catch your eye in two places in the store. I've seen all of the jarred fruit in both places.

I wondered the same thing about lime and lemon juices. You'll see frozen lemonade, but the lime (the good kind, Key Lime) juice on the shelf???

I thought you were gonna talk about those jarred mangos on Pioneer Woman's site. She was making Mango Margaritas, which I love to make, but hate to peel and depit (is that right, for the middle thing? Is it a stone? something else?) a mango cause it's so sticky and messy. May think about that again later on this evening.

they also have canned grapefruit on the shelves with the canned goods. May I suggest you buy a can of grapefruit from the shelf and another jar from the produce section and compare.
The unrefrigerated stuff is "canned" the other is much more like fresh...refrigerated with juice.

I would guess that the stuff in cans is pressure canned, and the stuff in jars is preserved in BWB.

I'm guessing Linda is right. After all, refrigerated shelf space is more expensive.

On the other hand, I've definitely seen cases where marketing is at work. There's a local restaurant that sells their jarred tomato sauce at a couple supermarkets. Unlike just about every other jarred sauce, this one is in the refrigerated section. And right on the label it says "refrigerate after opening" so I assume it doesn't need to be, before opening. I think it just helps the local/fresh image.

The jars of fruit that are kept in the cooled section are vacuum sealed, just as the jars of fruit in the canned food section are. I don't know of a way to do that without heat (not saying it can't be done). Just as the jarred sauce FOAS mentioned, I really think it is a marketing ploy. Many people would perceive the cooled sauce to be fresher than a jar or can in the canned food section, when in reality it most likely is not.

The grocery where my vacation house was located kept all of the Dole (or was it Del-Monte) jarred fruit in an unrefrigerated display in the produce section. The grocery near my everyday house kept the same product refrigerated in the produce section. I called the manufacturer (Dole or Del-Monte). They said it was supposed to be kept refrigerated.

Apparently the key is whether the label says "keep refrigerated," or "refrigerate after opening." The first needs to be kept refrigerated at all times; the latter is shelf-stable and only needs refrigeration after it is opened.

I was at another supermarket and noticed the same as bbstx above i.e Dole was at room temperature and DelMonte was in the cooler. DelMonte says ''Must be refrigerated". So, there we have it I think. Another vitally important question has been answered. I think the current idiom is "Thanks guys."
