I need to buy a new mop. Suggestions please

I just got done with my kitchen floor and am tossing out my old mop. In fact I finished the floor by hand as it didn't look clean.I have a huge old fashioned style country kitchen with inlaid linoleum that I would like to replace but that's another story.

Actually, I would just like to remove that as I think there is a oak hardwood floor under it . But for now, I need a mop!

I got a microfiber mop from a Janitorial Supplier. It is about 6" across and either 18" or 24" wide. The head comes separately from the pads. I bought one head and three pads. When the pads are soiled, just toss them in the wash. Here is a link that might be useful: Mine

Thanks. My 9yo is tall and I don't think she'd have a problem. We don't have inside pets now and after spending several days perusing this board it's really scared me off having any pets in the house ever, lol. But with two children I'm guessing we'll end up with one sooner or later. We live on a farm and we're all traipsing in and out all day so our floors do get used a lot. I'm more concerned with getting up gritty dirt, kitchen spills, and toddler crumbs than pet hair. geguymw - it sounds like you're familiar with the Bissell. Two things bother me about the Bissell that maybe you can answer. One is I wonder how well it "lays down" to vacuum under furniture. The other is how well it'll get into tight spaces, say if you have a few inches next to an end table. It looks to me like if I get the Bissell it'll just be for quickie cleaning 2-3 times a week and I'll also need a vacuum with attachments to clean area rugs and crevices. OR I can just buy a larger vacuum and pray she'll always remember to turn the roller brush off. (She's very blonde and she "forgets" a lot, lol.) I guess I'm leaning toward a stick vac just to keep it easier/fun for her to manage that task. Getting out the big vacuum is a weekly chore I don't look forward to now, mainly because my current vac doesn't do well with edge cleaning. Here's another stick vac I'm looking at. It's more expensive but I like that you don't have to buy replaceable filters for it, it lays flat for vacuuming under furniture, and looks easier to empty the dirt without spilling it. But I'm afraid I'll come in one day and find her vacuuming with the beater brush on by accident so maybe I'd better stick with the bissell. ugh, I realize this is a dumb thing to be hung up on but those floors were expensive and I want them to last until she's an old lady. For something that only gets used a few times a month, it would be hard to beat a Chemex for good coffee. But would you want a manual pourover for those "few times we leave really early and it's more convenient to make a pot of coffee"? For those times, maybe an automatic would be more what you are looking for? For fire and forget capability, the smaller Bonavita definitely makes very good coffee albeit costing beyond your specified ""under the $100 range." Also, the 5 cups are 4 oz. cups. Is that sufficient capacity for what you want? To get one within the "$100 and below" range, you could look for an an open box return on sale at a site like Seattlecoffeegear.com. I mention Seattlecooffegear.com because they have a pretty good return policy and sometimes have had returned Bonavitas. They also have their own review and testing videos which I found helpful in sorting through the many market choices the last time I bought a coffee maker. If you drink your coffee with dairy &/or sugar and you are a Costco member, you might check out the Cuisinart Brew Central 14-Cup machine. I saw one at Coscto today for (IIRC) about $60. I used a predecessor Cuisinart model (12-cup capacity) for a decade between the death of my ancient Braun automatic and the current Technivorm that I've been using for the last few years. My frame of reference is that I could drink my coffee black from the old Braun and the current Technivorm, but I pretty much always wanted some milk in the mix when I decanted from the Cuisinart into a thermos for early morning departures like you mentioned. Costco's absolute satisfaction guarantee means you can get your money back if you try the Cuisinart and don't like the coffee it makes. That might tell you more about the sub-$100 coffee-maker models than can be garnered from print reviews here.

Are you wanting just a TV console, or a large entertainment unit? This area could definitely take a big unit ... with the high ceilings, lots of windows, strong fireplace, etc. What is your style? You said you’re buying this house, so I’m assuming this isn’t your furniture? Some various styles of units, just to give an idea: A couple of consoles. I have no idea your preferred styles, colors, etc, so just throwing some ideas out here. :)

I used to primarily use one of those chamois mops advertised on TV with the built in wringer and occasionally still use it. Now I mostly use Swiffer WetJets. Have one in the bathroom and one in the kitchen. Refill the container and if I haven't refilled it, still use it with a spray bottle of cleaner or water.

I have, but haven't tried it yet, one of the Rubbermaid versions of a Sh-Mop. O-Cedar makes a version too as do others. They're the large rectangular one with the terry cloth or microfiber covers. Good for floors, walls, steps and more. The Clean Team recommends them. They say they're more efficient because of the size. If you have large floors, it could be advantageous. And you can go right from dry (dust) mopping to wet and back to dry if you want - just change covers. Same with the Swiffer, except the Swiffer uses disposeable pads, though you can make or buy reusable ones or buy generic ones that are a lot cheaper.

I like my Swiffer WetJet with the disposable pads. I uisetrictly in my linoleum kitchen. I sweep, then Swioffer. Takes about 5 minutes all together.

Forgot to mention since I have smaller floors I use the pads a lot of times before changing them. So it's not a pad for each use.

Scrubbing brushes do an effective job.

Lacking comfortable pads to attach to one's knees, surely one could find several layers of old blanket, jacket, or foam rumbber to sew together, if necessary and hold in place under the knees with rubber bands?

However ... surely some of you have enough ingenuity to be able to convince friend hubs to do it? Especially if one has a bad back?

Any worthwhile task is worth ... sharing, isn't it?

Aren't household chores ... worthwhile tasks??

Thanks for your suggestions. I'll write them all down so when I go mop shopping I will have something to refer to.
That is except Joyfuls scrubbing brush and knee pad idea. LOL !

Sharing house work ole Joyful, you have got to be kidding. Also if you have had knee replacement surgery, there is no way you can get on your knees to mop as there is no longer any cushion there to let you. It is way to painful. I use a Swiffer wet jet most of the time and I have to sit to do that because of my back. I also have the Shark steam mop I use upstairs on my Pergo.

I'm with Lindylu...make sure the maid comes with the mop!!

I usually just get on my hands and knees with some really good knee pads if I want it done right...otherwise when I'm in a hurry and cheating...I use a one of those mops with the strips that you can wring out really well...my son swears by the swiffer wetjet but on the floors we have it's one big streak!!

I have one of those sweep & mop things. I do like it as far as a mop goes, but I'm sure there is something better.
This has the grooves in sponge part that picks up crumbs.

Mine is really the knock off brand, but works just the same. I found mine at family dollar a few years ago, and buy the refills on ebay.

My favorite is just the old fashioned string mop.I do have a swiffer that i use at times as well.Also have a string mop that dh bought that i hate.It's one of those with the longer strings,kinda joined(tied) in the middle and you pull up on the handle to wring it out.It has a name but i;m having a senior moment.Anyway it's too heavy and bulky for me.He still uses it when he does the floors though.Yes he does help!!
