Can Drinking Glasses Be Washed in The Dishwasher?

Can drinking glasses be washed in the dishwasher if they have painted designs on them. I have a great big bunch of drinking glasses that have watermelons painted on them. I had them for my Mother's birthday get together one year. I am wanting to use them a little at a time for everyday use. Do you think the paint on them will fade and not look nice after a few washings in a dishwasher? Thank you for any advice you have.

If you really love them, I would wash them by hand. Dottie

Do you remember if they were 'hand painted' or made commercialy, like Libby Glass? Either way, I guess I'd test with just one glass in the dishwasher a few times and then compare it.

Natal, I love that picture! I remember those cups. I am a diehard Tervis Tumbler user. I save them when they get broken or worn out and mail them back to Tervis. They send you shiny new replacements! I figured out that I'll never have to buy another set! I know they're expensive but when you take into account that you get them replaced so easily, it's a bargain! Bealls is the best place I've found to buy them.

As a rule of thumb in a case like this, I ask myself how much do they mean to me? I wash everything In The dishwasher. Even my Royal Doulton china. With that I’d did a check with the manufacturer and was told that anything made after 1975 is safe for the dish machine. But my silver rimmed stemware started to fade, so now I wash it by hand. The China is Sherbrooke pattern and the crystal is Mikkasa Briarcliffe. a

where to put DAILY drinking/drunk used glasses?

Phoenix is really dry and dehydration is an actual health risk so we drink a ton of water all day long and we just have glasses everywhere :) I gather them all up and stick them in the DW constantly. When my DH was growing up each family member had a color (for all things) and they had large plastic water glasses in those colors on the counter so they could keep track. I like drinking out of glass so that doesn't work for us. I use lidded straw cups with my kid and he gets regular cups at meal-time. TMI: DH and I don't worry about sharing glasses. We share way too many cooties as it is to worry about drinking glasses. I know, we are gross :) I see lot's of cute pins on Pinterest that involve using chalkboard paint on glass, that would be a cute way to label/differentiate glass glasses... No need to drink Gatorade all day long, it's full of sugar. You do not need to replenish electrolytes unless you are an athlete or working for hours in the hot sun or are at risk for dehydration due to illness (like kids needing pedialyte) I have spent my lifetime in dry 115+ degree summers in addition to working out for up to 2 hours at a time and I have never needed electrolytes to hydrate. That is really just marketing hype. Now, healthy people should not be avoiding salt either, but that is a whole different subject :) Here is a link that might be useful: chalkboard paint glasses

Everyday drinking glasses, glass or plastic?

I have sets of glass and sets of hard plastic, sets of crystal. But I use daily a big Tervis tumbler with the additional handle for my morning iced coffee drink. I really need a handle. I also have beside me 24 hrs a day one of my metal insulated bubba water containers with a handle added to it also. I have a big collection of various types and sizes of water "bottles" in all colors and material. If we have company for a meal I use the crystal or good glass depending on the occasion. I am not picky at all but I definitely prefer a handle these days. My favorites are Tervis and Bubba mugs, insulated, don't sweat, and long term cold.

It depends on how the paint is applied. Are they glass or plastic? If they plastic they may eventually fade. If they are glass and the paint looks like it is fused to the glass I think it would be fine to wash them in the dishwasher on the top rack. I don't see why they would fade. The only problem I have with clear glass in the D/W is streaking but that has a lot to do with your water.I have to use a rinse additive or white vinegar in the rinse cycle.

They are probably like Libby Glass. They are packed away in a Rubbermaid tote. We had a big out door pitch in dinner one year and I made tablecloths with watermelons on them and I got the glasses to go with them. I may get one out and try it, it isn't that I love them, I just hate using faded glasses when they are so pretty new looking.

I have some from National Wildlife and yes they do fade over repeated washings. I got them at a garage sale. If you only use them once a year, I would just wash them by hand, maybe add a bit of bleach to kill the germies. A very tiny bit, but try it on one glass first.

My Mom had Libby glasses with white deer and gold rims. She put them in the dishwasher repeatedly. The gold is gone. Hand-wash yours.

If you really care about them, and don't want to chance fading or other damage from dishwasher detergent or breakage from something else in the dishwasher...wash them by hand.

I have some glass storage bowls with apples on them. Didn't take many trips through the dishwasher to turn those pretty red apples orange. Yep--they'll fade.

The flowers my sister in law painted on glasses for me, came off. :(

I would recommend hand washing.
