Mine is called a raclette.

Oh My Gosh, that is correct! A raclette!

Do you have any hints or suggestions to how easily incorporate this into a small party?

I had it once in Switzerland and loved it! There were about 6 of us around the table. I remember lots of cute little things: cheese, meats, veggies, sauces, etc. Very fun! Make sure the guests sit close enough to easily reach it.

A raclette grill is usually for melting cheese that is then eaten with potatoes, pickles, sausages, lightly cooked vegetables like broccoli or cauliflower. I don't know that the grill gets hot enough to cook foods, just to melt cheese.

In my experience with raclette, the cooker with the hot top for grilling is not traditional, but rather a wise use of the heat generated to melt the cheese.
Raclette at Swiss restaurants where I have eaten is offered several ways. Just cheese and potatoes and cornishons, or with meats, and with more meats and vegetables and with more cheese and more meat.
There is no right way....just melt the cheese and smear it on something and enjoy!

What they do here, is put a slice of meat in the dish, top with cheese, grill. Eat that as has been said with gherkins, lots of boiled potatoes and anything else you fancy. Different hams are always served, also a kind of dried Swiss beef - viande de grisons.

I saw one cheap at a garage sale a while back, and I'm half sorry I didn't buy it. It does sound fun, but definitely something that would need a spot on the shelf in the basement!

I know, we recently downsized and shelf space is at a premium!! However, I do have a full basement that I can utilize. I am laughing at myself though, we got rid of lots of things we rarely used or never used and now am slowly buying back a few things we had sold at garage sales!
But this just sounds so cool!! I want to try it!!
