The plot thickens with DGD's sewing machine

I printed out all your suggestions and drove over there yesterday. The first thing I noticed was that the feed dogs didn't rise up above the plate. I figured that must be the problem. I couldn't find a lever to adjust them, so I took apart everthing under the plate and was happily suprised when they rose by themselves. But the fabric still didn't advance during sewing. :-(

In the end I played with the knob at the top that controls the presser foot pressure. To make a long story short, I discovered that when I popped up the knob to release all pressure (or I guess it puts the pressure at minimum) the machine sewed perfectly . . . on paper. That is, I sewed on a couple of sheets of bond paper together, and the stitches were great. The paper advanced just fine. But when I tried to sew a piece of fine-wale corduroy (either side), it went back to its own tricks and didn't advance the fabric.

I'm hoping this discovery will help one of you come up with a brilliant solution. Thanks!
