On Saturday, Jan. 12, Sandy's QOTD was "how old is your washing machine?" And I answered that it was 10 and running great.

Well, it WAS. Until today. All of a sudden, it doesn't agitate right. It's busted! Woody took it apart and it's going to require 1, maybe 2 visits from a repair guy and a wait for parts. POOP! I have a basket of clothes to be washed and at the time it went bad, every single dish towel that we own was in the water! Woody got it to agitate a little, enough to finish the load, but gee whiz!

So, Sandy. Should I send the bill to your home or office? rofl. I'm just kidding, you know that, but RATS! I don't need this right now. I need clean clothes! I guess I'll be visiting my mother this weekend. I'm spending the night there on Sunday anyway, so now we all know what I'll be doing while you guys watch the super bowl!

Aw jeeze......that ain't no fun! We are sitting in the same boat...well, our oars are still in the water...but barely! LOL We have a noise that 'comes and goes', and I know that when it really comes, we are just going to go! It has done enough laundry to call it good for this old puppy!!

I can't believe that you went looking through all the old QOTD to find that one!! LOL You goof!

Nope, I used the search engine, it popped right up. lol I hope yours hangs in there for ya, kid. I was kind of hoping for a new machine, but this is a minor fix, so I guess I'm stuck with my mismatched set for a while longer. Shoot. lol

The beams are not as you would expect 16" centers. Remember when I first told you all about this project, I mentioned it was the cheapest structure of all times. Those horizontal beams are 23 3/4 inches apart. That doesn't count the thickness of the beam itself. I remember that number because I had a marvelous helper at the time who was between jobs as a computer programer and was working out his OC tendencies on the project. Each and every brace we cut to go between beams was measured twice and cut once. There are 6 braces between each roof beam and if there is an eighth inch deviation I'll unscrew each and every one. That's right! No nails on this project. We used decking screws, so a hole had to be drilled through the beams and into the ends of the cross piece before putting in one single screw, three screws per end. (He decided on 3 rather than two) Maybe I am a little OC myself? All I know is that I wrote the plan for only one side and 3 crosspieces each because I figured I would get all sorts of flack from my volunteers. When he asked if I wouldn't prefer to put in 3 on the other side too, I started grinning like an idiot and took off for the lumberyard. Do I hear over-engineering from the audience? Those lateral forces scare me silly. Up and down is easy! I was planning on coming back and doing the other side of the roof myself when no one else was around. I'm glad I'm not cutting the pieces for that bench back. My cheap tools would never get through it. Would love to see the finished product or a photo of same. I gave up on chess except when I was teaching the kids. We had some neighbors from H*** who invited us over for drinks. The first thing he does is haul out the chess set and start bragging. We are not that good at it but we could figure out we were better without too much difficulty. He challenged DH first and when he was beat, challenged me. I decided I would lose as fast as possible and get us out of an uncomfortable position. To my horror after 3 moves there was a sudden silence broken only by DH's struggle to avoid laughing. I looked at what I had been doing and saw I had played a classic fool's mate. I did the necessary and stood up abruptly, knocking the board off the table and saying his wife needed help in the kitchen. While it saved his ego we were never invited back. Gee, I wonder why? Sandy

Why are you so focused on a coldframe -- on the north side of the house? I doubt it will get enough sun to be productive. Personally, I would forgo the season extension methods until after you get the swing of the local seasons. It's too late in the year to get anything started for winter except garlic, but many things do fine outdoors in the winter here without protection provided you start them early enough in the fall to reach most of their growth. Cabbage, kohlrabi, collards, spinach and so forth. With very few exceptions, I direct seed almost everything. I have very little luck with cool weather crops in the spring here -- it just gets too hot too fast -- but peas, radishes, lettuce and other quick varieties will make it before the heat does. I direct seed cabbage and cauliflower in late Jan (and they don't always make it), lettuce in early Feb and other spring crops like peas, radishes, mustard, Irish potatoes, beets and turnips about Valentine's Day. Summer crops go in about Easter; fall crops in July and winter crops in August, then back around to garlic in mid to late October. I suggest you wander over to the ACES web site and indulge your inner elephant's child. They have garden calendars, notes of successful local methods and much more. At this point in the season, if I were you I would: - Focus on building compost bins and collecting composting material. There's nothing wrong with a plain old compost pile; no bin necessary. - Work on other infrastructure, like fencing, sheds and raised beds if you are going to use them. - A drip irrigation system is a big help here; you may want to plan for that. - How are you going to preserve your bounty next year? If you have plans for canning, drying, etc., get yourself organized and prepared while it's the off season with drying racks and such. Root cellars don't really work very well here but finding the cool spots in or under your house will help some for potatoes and such. - Frankly, I'd till up your garden spot now to help kill weed seeds and roots, and rake the grass up and either compost it or burn/trash it. If you have bermuda or a similar grass thug, don't try to compost it! Even if you plan to be no-till in general, it will help get your spot started. One last thought on homemade seed containers: Like I said, I don't start much indoors now -- more effort than it's worth -- but when I do I use either old nursery pots so that I don't have to transplant them into another pot before they go in the ground, or I have some love wooden seed flats that work better than anything else for a nice mix of moisture retention vs. too wet. I used to make newspaper pots, but I found the plants developed healthier root system when I took the paper off before planting -- the paper didn't biodegrade quite as fast as the plants need root space.

"Do you loose all your leaves when you let it go semi-dormant?" You must have asked me this same question two times at least already!! I guess you don't believe it. But no, I don't loose ANY leaves in the winter when I grow them under chilly and dry conditions (December until mid-February). I do not keep my limes (Persian or Key limes) in cool conditions (they are much more tropical). Citrus and hot, dry interior conditions just don't go together so I have given up on anything but limes in the house itself. For the rest of the Citrus collection (in the garage), day temps under glass are now in the low to mid 60's even when it's only in the mid 50's outside--that's NOT cold and the air is fairly humid. As I said, my challenge is really just January--the rest of the year is a cake walk. PS. One of the reasons I am anxious to get them out of the garage is that a stronger sun and warmer conditions means that I have to be much more attentive to watering as they dry out much faster now. I wish I could say that I dote over them in the Winter, but I virtually forget about them from about early December until mid-February.

Well obviously I love pink in all kinds of applications! My husband rigidly adheres to the notion that pink is not for boys in any way shape or form. His clothing is all shades of black, grey, white, brown khaki and beige and if he wants to really cut a rug--burgundy! He leans that way in decorating too, which is so not me. I am loving this thread!! I find pink, in the right combinations, a very soothing color. Pink and green reads fresh, pink with neutral natural tones is very bunny nest soothing, IMHO. Pink and blue, not so much, that's kid's nursery. I made a big mistake thinking that I could "tone down" a pink walled room with blue accents. They both stand out garishly when you do that . . . toning down means using shades much closer on the color wheel. I found that whole mauve, teal and grape color scheme did not wear well, although I like all the colors individually. It was too much contrast for my aesthetic. My last house had teal trim and carpet in the master bedroom, with a mauve and grape flower border wallpaper over white walls. I nicknamed the room "the aquarium." I would have repainted the trim but it was extensive, including a bay window with seat and trim below, all in teal. My bedding in there was mostly pink. It looked OK. Now I have cornflower blue carpet in most of my rooms and that does not play nice with pink IMHO unless you are doing a baby shower . . . Edited to add that the pink color in the room I needed to tone down was BM "Old Country" which is supposed to be a warm peachy pink but read "pepto bismol" in the room I used it in. Since my dad painted the room, I had to keep the wall color but managed to tone it down with browns, burgundys, camel, gold, beige, terra cotta, etc.

I once read that you should never talk about how good an appliance is doing in front of said appliance. They hear you and just to be contrary, they break down. Now I guess you can't even brag about them on a computer. Apparently they've now learned how to read!! LOL (Sorry to hear that you're having troubles.)

That was pretty funny Shirley, and it must be true, darn smart things those appliances. I try to never speak of mine in front of them, only in hushed tones in private...LOL! I have outsmarted my coffee machine tho, came across another one still in the box in my job (apartment manager), so I tucked it away for when the present one decides it's done I can just go to the store room and get the new one...haven't said that out loud and hope the thing isn't looking over my shoulder...hehe.

Well, the washer is only about 15 feet from the computer, so I guess it has good eyesight. lol Funny, Shirley! But how come I bad-mouthed my dryer for years and it wouldn't ever die? It's so random....

I also have a spare coffee maker, it's hidden downstairs, Suzan. SHHHH! I'd just as soon it stay hidden, I like the one we're using now a lot. It has a thermal carafe, which is great.

Repairman can't come soon enough for me, I keep seeing things I'd like to wash.

You're not the only one, FlamingO!! In that very same Question of the Day, I posted that we bought our washing machine in January 1982, and I had bought the dryer in July 1971. Our laundry room is downstairs, and my "office" with my 'puter is upstairs, so there's no way my laundry appliances could know what was being said about them...

Four days later the dryer decided that it would "air dry only" and no longer give out any heat...

So, we did some online research to determine what we wanted to get to replace it, and finally went out and bought one. Set up a delivery day when we could be here...

That night, after we bought the new dryer, I had to wash a load of underwear and socks. I figured I'd run them through the dryer on the air dry a couple of times to at least get them to the point where I could just aim my (hair) blow dryer at them to quickly finish the drying.

Yep, opened up the dryer after the first cycle and the clothes were DRY. The dang thing decided to start working again! Hubs decided it must have been because it knew it was about to be replaced...
