I've been on a glass painting binge (5 pics)

Posting a picture recently of a martini glass I painted several years ago reminded me that I had more glasses waiting to be decorated. So I got out the paints and had some fun. I've done 7 so far, but these photographed the best. My efforts never look like the ones I see for sale in a local art gallery, but they're pretty in their way. And my guests are in no danger of getting their glass confused with another. :-)

Well, it's rained everyday since sunday so i'm gonna try to run out and finish the painting this afternoon! Kathy---i hope the paint holds up too...im trying not to be a negative nancy but I don't know that i have any real faith that it will. sigh. i tried to tell them that but they kept bugging me. now im kinda mad that i caved, lol luna--no one minds the colored grass...the one before us planted solid bahia in our yard because of the slope. (haven't gotten around to replacing it) So, it grows like a weed and is chopped off in literally days.

Thanks for your compliments Luvs & Jane! DSiL was very happy that we had a little gathering in her honour especially in our "weakened" conditions. It is funny now that I have the dish-ease, I never even think to use paper plates even for a BBQ. It is too much fun to pick out real dishes for such an occasion...better for the environment too! DD

I've been scanning my dad's negatives......(5 pics)

No, flatbed scanners can't be counted on to accommodate negatives. You need to find one that has settings and physical properties that will allow negative scanning. Scanning negatives requires backlighting. I was recently on the phone with a Canon techie, and he mentioned that my scanner was so great because it takes negatives of different sizes, and it was the only one Canon made that would do that. Unfortunately, it's not being manufactured now. I took a look on Amazon and found this one, which will scan slides, negatives and medium-format panoramic film up to 6 x 22 cm. I usually have the negative holder on my scanner set to an opening of 2x3". If I want to scan a 2x2" negative, I just set it in the opening, leaving blank space around it. The preview will come up as a black rectangle, but if I draw a crop box inside the rectangle, my image will show up. I can then adjust the crop to include what I want before I click Scan. Perhaps the DPReview people can recommend other scanners. I'm also wondering if you could use a light box to "scan" the negatives with your camera. Scanning is basically the same as taking a picture. I've handled some slides this way. Because these slides were damaged (mounted under glass and now stuck to the glass--and even worse in some cases), and because I'm not using a tripod, the results aren't wonderful. But I think I could do a lot better if I put some thought into this and started out with better slides.

Hmm, I'd say take the living room wall color, and amp it up a couple shades darker for those chairs? Teal is great, and maybe that's why it appears to be "overdone"? Lovely find! Rattlesnakes, eh? Dad ran over one when I was a kid -- it was as long as our rural country road was wide. The thing didn't die. He had me get out of the car and run back and get Mom and the hunting rifle -- Mom was petrified of snakes but she also didn't want to see that thing near either of her kids. I think she got maybe 200 feet close and passed on the rifle to me, who passed it on to Dad so he could get rid of the thing. That snake got a mention for extreme length in our community weekly newspaper. Best, though, to get rid of them at 5 (or less) feet! I don't know if it was that snake or some other, but one time Dad did cook up rattler. If you stay away from the venom sacs in the head, the meat is edible. Tasted like chicken... (LoL). Hoping your hubby doesn't need to stay deployed too much longer.

Thanks, guys! The paint is covered with a clear gloss glaze and can be hand-washed.

Those are absolutely gorgeous! I like this way of keeping track of your glass MUCH better than the wine glass charms.

What a great idea. It would be fun to find some cheap glasses at Goodwill or someplace like that just to practice. I have no artisitic talent, however.

I did this years ago.

Mine had to be hand washed and they lasted for years but the paint is starting to come off.

What kind of paint do you use and more importantly, how do you clear coat the out side and what do you use?

they make really nice gifts and are fun to do.

Sleeperblues, all the glasses were $1 each at DollarTree. The wine glasses are made in USA, and the martini glasses (not pictured) are made in the Netherlands. One thing you could do that requires no brushwork is to apply the paint with a Q-Tip, making dots. I did this awhile back on glass dishes from Walmart. My DD uses them as dessert plates (different colors for each plate), and always gets compliments on them.

Magic and Joann, I use acrylic enamel decorative paint (in the little plastic jars): FolkArt Enamels by Plaid, and Delta Ceramcoat. When the paint is completely dry (I leave it overnight or longer) I paint over it with Delta's Air-Dry PermEnamel Clear Gloss Glaze. It seems to dry quickly, but the container says not to wash it for 10 days. The glaze pretty much disappears, but puts a really nice gloss on the paint.

Part of the fun is the way the glasses look inside, as the person is drinking. This one is a martini glass:

Thanks, Rose! I forgot to mention that I first paint the glass with Delta's Surface Conditioner, which turned out to be isopropyl alcohol. Next time I'll just buy the alcohol at the dollar store.

Yes, a brush. The instructions say to use a soft synthetic brush, and clean it afterward with soap and water. I hope you go for it, Magic--but please don't make us wait till Christmas to see the results! :-)

Oh I almost missed this one- yes they are lovely. I remember the plates from a few years ago. When you describe applying the paint with Q tips you make it sound so simple. But when you don't have any artistic talent I can easily see myself messing even that up.

emagineer - you're right about Susan's other projects - she is very talented in photography and rug hooking too.

Your talent is endless Susan. The klutz that I am would mess up even the dots for sure!
